Over on the Parkrunners Anonomoyous thread there has been a cunning plan being hatched for a summer 10k meet up. Picking up on excellent suggestion from thenightsky here is a shiny new thread for us to use to plot.

So who's in?

If there was enough time we could stay in the area but I'd need time to find a place that I could bring my dogs :) we're in Suffolk so Yorkshire and back in a day is a bit of a trek!

Flossiechops · 30/12/2013 08:54

Nice try tiredemma Grin

Tiredemma · 30/12/2013 08:56

Grin

damn- you got me!

We are very close to all major road links though............Grin

Flossiechops · 30/12/2013 09:03

Completely agree with you! Have entered the Lichfield half thanks to you Grin!

jellybrain · 30/12/2013 09:07

Now I'm confused. No wonder I have geographical issuesBlush

Tiredemma · 30/12/2013 09:08

ah thats great! I think you are much faster than me though so probably wont be possible to run alongside you!

thenightsky · 30/12/2013 09:21

I did a 10k in Sutton Coldfield park many years ago. It was an excellent course, but I seem to recall a scarily long hill right at the end, up to the finish line Grin

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 30/12/2013 12:53

nightsky the road 10's I did last year were Sunderland (start of May), Newton Aycliffe (it's near Darlington, just off the A1 in June), York and Darlington (both of these were in August a week apart).

That wetherby is certainly doable for me. I think though we will have to have different 10Ks up and down the country so people can do one closer to them.

feetheart · 30/12/2013 13:05

I'd be up for it, depending on where it is as cost of travelling might be an issue.
I'm not in centre of the country at all (Beds), have no Parkrun close by but am happy running on my own. Have done a few 5k, 10k and half marathons, including GNR this year which was FANTASTIC, and need some goals for 2014.

Rugbylovingmum · 30/12/2013 16:21

I've just started the c25k but would love to try a 10k later in the year if it wasn't too far to travel. I did a couple of 10k's and half marathons years ago so know I enjoy the longer distances - def not a sprinter! Hoping to be running 5k by mid/late February and thought I might try the local park run as a first 'race' - are they good for slow beginners?

I'm in North Yorkshire too so if you fancy a running chatting at the start of a race partner biscuits I'll be up for that later in the year. I found having races planned and someone to meet there brill for motivation when I used to run. Can you recommend any local runs that are good for beginners? I'm a bit nervous going somewhere on my own and finding out it's all fast/club runners.

cinnamongreyhound · 30/12/2013 16:30

Parkruns are perfect for beginners! We are quite a small parkrun but have people from 18mins to 40mins and all are cheered over the line Xmas Grin

Rugbylovingmum · 30/12/2013 16:52

Thanks cinnamongreyhound! That can be my first goal - to do a park run by the end of Feb. Just have to persuade DP to get up and take DD1 to ballet but he's really proud of me for getting my trainers on and my butt out the door so sure he won't mind.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 30/12/2013 16:56

Rugby I'd love to have someone to run or chat with at the start and end of races. The best races for those who are not sure how good they will be in a run are those that are set around towns and cities as these get a wide variety of runners.

I think that running is a really friendly activity to take part in. A lot of people are usually a bit worried about how they will look and feel that everyone else will be much better but that's often not the case. I was the same when I first took it up.

Standingonlego · 04/01/2014 19:55

Lots of lovely folk, and a few familiar names on this thread. The emerging plan seems to be a few different 10ks, rather than just one :)

I think multiple races is a fabulous plan, it is just nice to have some shared motivation and some people to meet before & after races - like biscuits described. It is more about us connecting with each other, not a master plan! Running is such a variable activity, I like to run on my own normally as it gives me some headspace but I love meeting other runners at parkrun and events. It is great to have people to chat too before and compare notes with afterwards. I, like others, have found runners to be generally extremely friendly and welcoming.

That was a bit of a ramble Blush

feetheart I am in Northants, is that near to you (poor geography here!)

OP posts:
Knackerelli · 04/01/2014 20:21

Well, tiredemma, have just signed up to the 10k in Sutton park on 10 may! Gulp! My legs are wobbling just thinking about it!

Tiredemma · 04/01/2014 20:24

I might do it knackerelli- although im doing a half marathon the week before. The last HM I did (the GNR) I was still in a shit state the following week and certainly wouldnt have had a 10k run in me.

Will see how my HM training goes and if I dont think I am trained enough for it then ill probably sign up for the 10k

EauRouge · 04/01/2014 20:25

I'm in Cambs, so close to both Beds and Northants. Does Whipsnade zoo still do a 10k in the summer?

Knackerelli · 04/01/2014 21:04

Wow tiredemma, you're much better than me! Don't stress, would be lovely to meet you but understand you've got other races planned. Maybe one day we'll do half marathons together Grin

thenightsky · 04/01/2014 23:11

So it looks like no single place is good for a one-off MN 10k Sad

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 06/01/2014 07:16

Could we do a north/south/east/west 10K so at least some people are running the same one at the same time?

Blatherskite · 06/01/2014 11:31

Whipsnade would be fun. We do trail runs through Woburn sometimes and spotting the animals makes for an interesting run.

feetheart · 06/01/2014 11:47

Whipsnade did the Zoo Stampede 10k last year plus a few shorter distances (I was signed up for it but couldn't do it in the end :() Hoping they do it again this year but no news yet.

Blatherskite - Woburn is reasonably close to me too. Love the idea of spotting animals :) They did a Reindeer Run before Christmas but I only heard about it afterwards so hoping to add it to 2014's list, especially as it is for the RNLI which is close to my heart.

Standingonlego - not that far! Have you seen this DS(8) and I are doing it with at least one other MNetter and her DC.
