Over on the Parkrunners Anonomoyous thread there has been a cunning plan being hatched for a summer 10k meet up. Picking up on excellent suggestion from thenightsky here is a shiny new thread for us to use to plot.

So who's in?

talking, non here either. I wish there was!

WoodBurnerBabe · 26/12/2013 19:54

I'm starting running again tomorrow, am hoping to do our local 5k in March then would love a 10k to aim for! But does depend where it is.

ShrekTheHalls · 27/12/2013 00:49

anyone got any better suggestions than runkeeper to help me push up the distance? I'm a sprinter tbh and I'm going to find it mighty tricky to push past the 5k I can do on a good day now. I swim a couple of hrs a week and do around 8hrs of aerobic activity a week too (being nonspecific in order to avoid outing self Wink ) but that doesn't translate into distance iyswim. Athletics coaching ain't going to help me either Grin as it will just reinforce my habits!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 27/12/2013 09:47

Shrek can you download a training plan which gradually builds up the distance like Bridge to 10K - but that will need you to run several times a week, and it sounds like you are busy already. I read somewhere that you shouldn't increase your distance more than 10% a week.

If it's techy stuff you are after (I don't know how runkeeper works, but think it's an app of some sort), I have a very basic Garmin (the 110) which tells me how far I've gone and how fast I'm going. It's all I need (there are other versions with more functions). You can download the data from the watch to your computer. I logged all my marathon training runs on it and it was really motivating to see how far I'd gone, how my times were (marginally) improving and most imortantly how many calories I'd burnt Grin.

ShrekTheHalls · 27/12/2013 10:04

will check that out ohohne Smile

Grin at busy already but I can tweak the other stuff to fit in with this as cross training iyswim and get two runs a week of my own Smile
sorryfor hijack Blush

Can I join? I did C25k in the summer, and have kept going, I do 3x3 k runs in the week and I longer run on a Sunday. I would love to build up to a summer 10k, that would be a huge achievement for podgy little me!

I can't tell you how much I love running! It's been an epiphany. I use Map My Run, but find it increasingly inaccurate - I ran for 44 mins today and it reckons I ran nearly 14k, the time is right but the distance is way, way over what I actually ran. Has anyone else found this?

cinnamongreyhound · 27/12/2013 21:08

Sometimes if you loose the gps signal them it draws a straight line from where it lost you to where it finds you LizzieVereker.

I'm sure there's an nhs podcast bridge to 10k and there is also a c210k but I'm not sure it's nhs.

Endomondo has training plans ShrekThe Halls.

LizzieVereker · 27/12/2013 21:22

Hello Cinnamon! How are you? Yes Map Invent My Run does that, and also thinks I can run straight across a lake, like Jesus Confused. I'm thinking of splashing out on a Garmin watch.

cinnamongreyhound · 27/12/2013 21:49

Hi, I'm good thanks. I got a 110 for my birthday, it's fab and I charge it from my laptop while uploading to garmin connect to check out my routes :)

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 28/12/2013 11:18

Ooh I'd love to join too. I really enjoy races but go on my own and can be boring at the start. I'm doing a few in 2014 and a half marathon (my first which is in Sunderland) so if anyone is near me (North Yorkshire/North East area) it would be great to do one together.

jellybrain · 29/12/2013 22:45

What about the Zest challenge in Henley on 15th of June. There's a 5k as well as the 10k. It's women only and includes obstaclesGrin

jellybrain · 29/12/2013 22:50

Whoops think that might have been last years race. I will take a look when I have access to a proper PC. (Using my phone at the moment )I think they take place at another location too.

thenightsky · 29/12/2013 23:06

Where's Henley? Is it middle of UK-ish?

jellybrain · 29/12/2013 23:16

It's in Oxfordshire so yes quite central.

jellybrain · 29/12/2013 23:20

The other race was at Catton Hill in Derbyshire for 2013. I assume it will be the same for 2014

thenightsky · 29/12/2013 23:27

ahahahah at Oxfordshire being centre of UK Grin

I think you'll find its more Lancashire/Northumbria way!

thenightsky · 29/12/2013 23:28

centre of uk

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 29/12/2013 23:36

Obstacles jelly Shock Grin

thenightsky · 29/12/2013 23:43

Biscuits You sound as though you are the most centrally placed MNer so far. Is there a road 10k we can target as a MN get together near you?

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 29/12/2013 23:50

This might not be far north enough, but it is very handily located just off the A1 Smile

Cracking Little Yorkshire Run

WoodBurnerBabe · 30/12/2013 04:38

If you want obstacles, the Badminton Horseless Team Event is fun - but not central at all, in South Gloucestershire... It's basically the horse trial cross country course but on foot, so you have climb the jumps are run through water :/)

jellybrain · 30/12/2013 08:22

Ok so my geography is a bit offGrin and apparently its Berkshire not Ox. Looks fun though.

WoodBurnerBabe · 30/12/2013 08:23

Nope, Henley is definitely in Oxfordshire. It was in Berkshire until they moved the boundaries, but currently it is Oxfordshire.

Tiredemma · 30/12/2013 08:28

sutton park (sutton coldfield) quite central??

www.womensrunninguk.co.uk/womens10k.obyx

they do lots of other 10ks in the park also (race for life) and local charity/running club ones.
