Following on from ErrolTheDragon's October Shred thread:

Another month, another chance to start/restart/continue the 30 Day Shred, or similar - ripped in 30, NMTZ, whatever your preferred form of torture exercise with Jillian you're welcome here for support, advice and motivation!

30 day shred - Level 3 day 3 done and a lot easier today! used a yoga mat which I think has made a world of difference and my elbows are very grateful for.

Nearly finished shred in October before going on holiday but had to stop about 3 days short with torticollis. Took me about 7 weeks to get that far, and was feeling quite proud, but then very depressed when last year's holiday dresses were tight on the shoulders and boobs:(
Did anyone else find that they increased shoulder / boob size by doing it? My diet didn't really change, so that was the only real difference I can think of. I used 1.5 kg hand weights, so not exactly miss universe!
am considering starting again, but don't want to get any broader, so am a bit confused - any advice welcome, thanks

bugdem · 11/11/2013 21:39

I'm quite liking the pain, im sure I won't be saying that tomorrow.

I'll make sure to do some more stretches tomorrow. I didn't realise I could hold the couch for support, I was wobbling all over the place!

Looking forward to day 2 already.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/11/2013 22:10

I'm quite liking the pain

It feels virtuous and lets you know you've really done something, doesn't it?

Deeply - I can't say I've noticed increased shoulders/norks at all - the only thing that's definitely bigger (rather than just firmer) is my arm muscles, but they've maybe taken the place of a bit of chicken wing. I thought it was using big loads for small numbers of repetitions which grew large muscles, not this sort of thing.

deeplybaffled · 11/11/2013 22:42

I'd thought that too, so am more baffled than usual!
Will give it another go and see if I can finish before Christmas, which seems a semi realistic goal. If the dresses don't fit any better by then, I give up:(

mumtoblaire · 12/11/2013 08:11

Bought this two months ago and still in wrapper! But starting today. Lost 6lbs in two weeks and totally motivated. Love Jillian and cannot wait to work with her. Wish me luck!

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 12/11/2013 09:09

Morning everyone, the sun is shining here and I'm determined not to wallow in self-pity and loathing today so I'm going to shred and then nip out for a run

Well done to all the newbies, this is a hard work out but so good. I swear I've gained an inch in height since doing this regularly, has anyone else noticed similar?

ErrolTheDragon · 12/11/2013 10:37

L3D4 of Ri30 done, and a nice dog-walk. Smile
And weighed myself this morning - 60.0 kg so still very gradually going down rather than insidiously creeping up. Which when you're over 50 is gratifying. (this is doing 5:2 as well, but I'm eating more on the 5 days than I used to eat 'normally'.) Now the trick will be to edge down below 60 and keep it there.

Funnily enough DH measured my height recently (to see how far DD has to go to catch up with me, she's nearly there) and I was 5' 1 and a half instead of the expected 5'1" - but it was first thing in the morning so more likely due that than that I've belatedly grown! Grin]

Back from a long walk with DS and thought bugger it I'm done with exercising today. But after loking at the thread I feel guilty, so LI D7 it is...

As for stretches, I tend to stick at the end of each workout.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/11/2013 12:28

I've never done yoga....some of those stretches look very stretchy!

Just done a BMI calc - I'm officially Not Overweight! (in the morning, anyway - will doubtless be a bit over this evening esp as meeting DD after school and we'll probably go to Bella Italia)

mumtoblaire · 12/11/2013 14:41

Just finished L1D1 and I am aching. Not looking forward to tomorrow now as arms are really sore already.

bugdem · 12/11/2013 15:24

Not feeling as bad today as I thought. Wee bit tender though.

Looking forward to doing it tonight, won't be til I get in from uni at half 8 so I'm hoping I manage to keep my resolve!

ErrolTheDragon · 13/11/2013 09:02

L3D5 of Ri30 done.

MtoB and bug - push through the next few days and the soreness will wear off and you will start to feel those muscles strengthening. If you quit in the early stage you get the pain but not the gain!

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 13/11/2013 09:22

Errol, you really are keeping me motivated, thank you!

Did the school run in my running kit, intending to run back as a warm up to shredding - completely forgot I'd be wearing a huge coat (first proper frost today) so ran inside a sauna and now about to shred

Think I'll do a level 2 today, I hated it before but am finding level 1 much less of a challenge. Whodathunk it :-O

For newbies, take measurements and compare after a couple of weeks to monitor your improvement?

I forgot to do this at the start this time, and wish I had.

ElleBellyBeeblebrox · 13/11/2013 14:01

L3d4 today. Still crap at being superman! Bad and stressful day so ruined any benefit of Shredding by eating a handful of marzipan that was reserved for bloody Pudsey biscuits. I think I need to draw a line under today! Well done all for being motivated and less weak willed than me...

ErrolTheDragon · 13/11/2013 15:59

Your muscles will still be that bit stronger for shredding despite the marzipan. (isn't it full of healthy almonds and egg white anyway? forge the sugar). Hope tomorrow is better for you.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/11/2013 15:59

duh forget the sugar

ssmile · 14/11/2013 08:02

Thanks for motivational posts it spurred me on to squeeze in shred yesterday in between finishing work & collecting girls I had 35mins so quick change and did L2. I'm no where near as strong as last year I struggled through full sets of cardo which surprised me as I'm cycling18-40miles a week most weeks. I also had to drop the weights on some eexercises. I'm going to hope its just the lack of sleep this last week with poorly kids and DH. Going to tryshred Sat. Full mmoon is building so I've got more energy than usual Grin but so have my kids!!

ErrolTheDragon · 14/11/2013 09:07

Well done ssmile. That's the good thing about Shred, you really can squeeze it into an odd half hour.

L3D6 of Ri30 done. I struggle through some of its cardio intervals, others are OK. Depends what muscles are involved I guess and whether they're the sort which are really all-or-nothing.

WillColbert · 15/11/2013 09:34

After several days without broadband, I'm checking in to say L1D10 done. Interestingly I weighed myself the other day and I'm 2lb heavier than when I started. Except for after DS was born, I've not been on a diet before but maybe I have to do that now as my weight has gradually crept up over the last couple of years. Is anyone else following a diet program along with the shred?

ErrolTheDragon · 15/11/2013 09:44

L3D6 od Ri30 done.

Will, you may not need a 'diet' so much as a bit of an adjustment - most people have a tendency to gradually creep up in weight.

I got to the point of being fed up always 'watching what I eat' - being both short and over 50 now - so I'm doing 5:2, so I only have to think about it 2 days a week. Seems to suit me quite well - instead of creeping up in weight I'm creeping down, while eating more normally most of the time than before. For other people, just something like reducing carbs a bit or switching to lower GI where possible may suit - but unless you're seriously needing to lose weight best avoid thinking in terms of a 'diet'.

ElleBellyBeeblebrox · 15/11/2013 10:19

L3 D6. Fell over while doing jumping lunges today, oops. Coordination not my strong point. Not on a diet as such (constantly hungry as I'm breast feeding) but trying to cut down portion sizes a bit and eat less crap. What is good to snack on that fills you up but is low fat?

ssmile · 15/11/2013 16:02

ellie those jumping lunges are hard! You do well just to attempt them. I never did when I was full into shred last year just stuck to non jumping lunges. I lost 3stone whilst breastfeeding by using my fitness pal to log my food and just had extra 400 cal snack so wason about 1600c a day and lost 1-2lbs a week. Porridge for breakfast and banana at 10.30am were my "not snacking" foods. And chocolate rice cakes for a desperate 3pm crunch time.
No shred for as finally got the tum bug going slowly around our family :( been 3days between each person! Hohum but not eaten anything either :)
Errol sounds like your in the zone. Its inspiring.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/11/2013 16:41

What is good to snack on that fills you up but is low fat?

The standard advice is to include some sort of protein, which helps stabilise your sugars (not so much 'fills you up' as 'stops you wanting to snack again too soon'). TBH I don't particularly follow this advice myself, except that maybe I try to have some nuts or yogurt not just carbs. If you're BF'ing probably something like a sandwich would be better than a smaller but less food-like snack IYSWIM (can't remember what the heck I ate 14-odd years ago, other than pizza and cream cakes on NCT meet ups!)

ElleBellyBeeblebrox · 15/11/2013 20:38

Thankyou, ssmile and Errol. I crave carbs but have been trying to have fruit and nuts and yogurt instead. I might try MFP, but found it a bit time consuming having to search for each food etc. Still feel unsure about actively dieting while bfeeding but I guess if you still allow for some extra calories you should be fine. Just don't want to affect my supply, he's a greedy baby like his mother

ElleBellyBeeblebrox · 15/11/2013 20:39

Sorry you've been feeling grim ssmile :( sick bugs are the worst. Hope you're having lots of DVD and pyjama time.
