Anyone want to join me? It means we should start 2012 being able to run 5k - now there's an incentive to stick with it.

Hi ormirian! Good to have another wannabe runner along!

Bugrit, why does your DH think you shouldn't do it?

I was looking at a 12 week10k training programme last night and the first 10 weeks were all about getting you to run for 30 mins. It was based on 4 sessions a week and from week 10 the Mon, wed Fri sessions were still 5k and the Sunday sessions added 10 mins to the run each week so by the end of week 10 you ran for 40 mins, Sunday of week 11 was 50 mins and the end week 12 was a 10k race.

You have a month and a half to double your distance so even if you only add 5 mins on a week you have plenty of time to up the distance.

You can always sign up and if you feel in 6 weeks that it was too ambitious you can always run-walk it. also have a look at the slowest times from last year's event. What's the pace of the slowest? Bet you're much quicker than that!

If you want some moral support to increase your distance I'll do it with you. I need to do it soon so starting next week rather that in a few weeks doesn't matter much to me.

Hello!!

Needed to share - just got back from gym. Something amazing happened tonight. Week 5 Run 2 - I DID IT!!

I got to the end of Run 1 (8 mins) - "alright I could carry on a bit"

Half way through the middle 5 min walk "I'm ready to start running again now"

And to the END of Run 2 (8 mins) - "OK I'm ready to stop but not heaving a lung up"

I'm on such a high. How cool is that?

Stats fans: 4.8MPH an hour for the runs and 3.2 MPH for the walks. I've worked out each 8 min run was 1.02KM (mixing the metric and imperial a little there)

I'm going to drink the best part of a bottle of wine to celebrate, whilst talking with my Lovely Mumsnet Bookswap group Grin

5ofus · 02/03/2012 20:08

Sorry - self obsessed!

bugrit I'd probably sign up and start the training, then know if I decided at a later date I wasn't ready I could always back out, or walk/run it. Why doesn't your DH think you should do it?

That hill in the middle looks a bit steep too Shock

ohbugrit · 03/03/2012 19:59

Sorry for that last post, had to dash halfway through posting so it was a bit of a garble and I just hit enter Blush

DH doesn't think it's a good idea because he doesn't want me to try something that's beyond me and fail. I have a BMI of 32 or something, remember ...!

Orm - sorry that I didn't welcome you in my earlier post - how are you finding things? :)

tidy, congrats on the weight thing - I was heavier before I had kids so for me I'd be looking at a ... um ... pre-adulthood weight I think Grin. Bet it feels great, well done!

5, well done on your progress! It's amazing how quickly the weeks pass isn't it? I'll be cheering you on for run 3 :)

kick, how are you? I really hope you're feeling better.

Thanks so much for those details about the 10k programme, go. I'm still havering. I'm technically still on week 7, partly after hurting my knee and wanting to go easy, partly because I keep forgetting to put week 8 on my MP3 player Blush. This month is busy with work and I don't know if I'm being crazy. Plus, with this timescale it only takes a slight twinge to bugger everything up. Hmmmm hmmmmm hmmmmmmmmm ...

golemmings · 04/03/2012 06:52

bugrit its a lovely sounding race - and the free whisky makes it more appealing but it is an annual event and other 10ks are available.

I would imagine that you could get round it if you want and feel hugely acomplished at the end or you could do one in another couple of months with more confidence.

ohbugrit · 04/03/2012 07:33

Morning!

Yeah I think maybe my enthusiasm from Tuesday's run had got the better of me. I'm off out with my companion again this afternoon and I'm going to put week 8 on the MP3 right now!

Maybe I'll do a parkrun first. :)

golemmings · 04/03/2012 09:59

Park runs sound brilliant. Unfortunately our nearest is over an hour away. I'd love to do one though!

Shred shredded and run runned. (bollx runned is now saved in my phone's dictionary...) And I'm knackered. Still on week one of the improvers programme. Decided to jog the 100m recovery intervals and run the runs a bit faster. My average pace was fractionally faster than r1 but overall I'm substantially slower doing even jog run than I was running a straight 5k. Doing shred just before I went our might have contributed to that though...

2 runs and 4 shreds to the major... The count down has begun!

OP posts:
5ofus · 04/03/2012 14:53

bugrit think you're right to come to that decision

go FB friends are also talking about the Shred.

Me. I'm scared of week 5 run 3. Going to go out and do it in a few mins. The anticipation is worse than the doing in this case I think!

5ofus · 04/03/2012 20:31

Very pleased to announce week 5 run 3 done. Took it at a slower than usual pace of 4.4 mph but jogged the whole way Grin

Went to the gym as it was raining outside.

It's true. This is definitely more of a mental challenge than a physical one. Feels amazing to have done it!!!

A couple of things really helped, firstly new sports bra super high intensity to keep my 38Es from flapping like spaniel ears. This kept them firmly in place and was fab.

Secondly I distracted myself writing this post to you lot!

Thirdly, as I left the house DP said "I know you can do this - just think how amazing you felt after run 2 and how amazing you'll feel when you finish week 3" which is so true!!

Off to celebrate Grin

musttidyupmusttidyup · 06/03/2012 20:32

Nice one 5ofus hope you enjoyed your celebration!

ohbugrit · 06/03/2012 21:42

Well done 5! Proud of you!

You getting nervous go? It's very exciting. I'm going to live vicariously and enjoy the adrenaline rush by proxy :)

I've sacked off the daft 10k plans and signed up for Sport Relief. 3 miles is a bit more civilized. The thing with couch to 5k is I feel like I can do anything now!

5ofus · 06/03/2012 23:29

Week 6 Run 1 done tonight. Again a slow and steady pace but I jogged the whole 18 mins (5 - 8 - 5 mins) Grin

And I did this one on the roads which I always find more difficult - I went jogging past all the very large houses on a local new build estate whilst DD was at gymnastics.

Sport Relief sounds good, I've signed up to do a mile of swimming with DP (signed up before I started running!) Everyone I talk to seems to think this will be difficult. I'm thinking it'll be OK. Perhaps I actually ought to GO swimming soon to figure out if it'll be as hard as everyone else thinks!

I'm thinking of 20 years ago when I used to do 1/2 mile swims without stopping! Mind you in my brain £20 is an appropriate amount to take on a night out. I'm living in the nineties Smile

OrmIrian · 07/03/2012 13:50

Finished week 1. Still in one piece Grin

DS1 did the second 2 with me. First time he got stitch and was puffing like an old man. Second time he found it much easier and even had a sudden 'power up'as he put it and was racing me, the little bugger Grin I am hoping that it becomes something he enjoys - it so much easier to stick to it if you love doing it.

5ofus · 07/03/2012 16:01

Well done Orm Grin

golemmings · 07/03/2012 20:01

Wow 5 you're doing so well! I think weeks 5 and 7 are the toughest mentally and 5 is the harder of the two.

I'm not sure I could swim a mile. I used to do half a mile before work at one point but, quite frankly, it bored me rigid. Not sure I could do an hour of plodding up and down so I'm impressed.

I also think £20 is plenty for a night out. It did me as a student when I could drink lots and you still get more pints than I can drink for £20 and enough left for a chip barn on the way home. Mind you, I've spent the last 3 1/2 years pregnant and/or pregnant, my camra membership has lapsed and I can't remember the last time I had more than a pint...

Bugrit good call on the 10k. Probably worth waiting until you can do it with ease rather than rushing it and putting unneccessary pressure on yourself.

I'm being a bit of a wuss. Should have shredded last night and didn't and should have run and shredded today and haven't. There is still time but my right thigh feels a bit tight. I've done loads of gardening though which I think is how I've hurt myself. So I'm resting in advance of Saturday's big event and agreeing with bugrit about the confidence you get from c25k and the dangerous places that misplaced ambition can lead to.

The northern major was last weekend and I've been looking at the photos. There was a scramble net to go under, a long tunnel to crawl through, a fast moving stream to cross, bales to climb over, and lots and lots and lots of mud. Photos of folk with mud literally running down their faces... The fastest people finished in 38 mins. The slowest took 2 hours.

I've not even checked the weather forecast for Saturday but I have no idea what to wear. Pictures are on the internet and filed hh competitor number so I stuffed in some random numbers and pulled up pics of a lass wearing leggings, a short sleeved t shirt/running top and gloves. I have legings but I've always found them too hot for running in. Not sure they would be better or worse than my usual 3/4 length light weight legs if I'm going to be up to my waist in mud/water. As for tops I have long sleeved thermals (which I stopped running in a month or so ago because they were too hot), or short sleeved fleece, merino wool or my new running top. What do you think?

I have a back and shoulder massage booked in for Friday pm (part of a present from DH about 3 years ago) and my post race treat is an afternoon in the jacuzzi. It's my friend's son's birthday party at the local pool and there's a jacuzzi by the pool so DS and I will sit in there and DH and dd can play in the pool, go down the water shoots etc.

I think I'm looking forward to Saturday... I thought I might leave my phone with DH so he can do race updates but since he's already got 2 children to cope with it might be a bit much!

I don't even know what 20 silk cut and a pint of snakebite'd cost you these days.

Congrats on first week done Orm

ohbugrit · 08/03/2012 07:39

Well done you guys, especially Orm - it gets easier! :)

I am also very much in agreement re the £20 night out. A whiff of alcohol and I'm pissed anyway these days Grin

5ofus · 08/03/2012 17:16

I was laughed at by my younger sisters when off on a night out with them. Admittedly we were out for a meal and bottle of wine or so. £20 would not have been enough - mainly because the wine helped me to decide deep fried ice cream would make a great choice for desert followed by more wine!

I don't do pubs, nightclubs and drinking until 3am anymore. The hangovers aren't worth it.

kickassangel · 08/03/2012 23:53

Hi,

Well, eventually I felt well enough (ish) to try running. Only to find that I was tired & the shin splints started hurting.

Anyway, I got to the doctor's yesterday, and after talking about my sinuses, she had a good look around the ENT. She is referring me for sinus scans AND sleep apnea. There's other possibilities as well.

Basically, when I say that exercising makes me tired & ill, well, it does. Cos I def have sinus probs, prob sleep apnaea (which I need to learn how to spell), and maybe low thyroid as well.

So, I shall keep doing this, but don't really expect to get to the end until one or more of those problems is resolved!!

I obviously feel pretty Sad about the fact that I am ill - I was hoping for a 'here's a tablet, now buck up & off you go' response. The sleep thing, if it's right, is life-long, which I'm quite Shock about. I am hoping that in a few months, when this is sorted out, and I have the right treatment, that I will be able to try this again, with a bit more success.

Anyway, keep running all of you. For now I am ducking out, but I have at least discovered that I can enjoy running & even make progress, so intend to pick it up as soon as my body is able to.

ohbugrit · 09/03/2012 05:57

kick I'm so sorry to hear this :(

DS had had problems with sleep apnoea and it truly is debilitating. To be dealing with life when you get no proper rest is bad enough but if you have other problems on top it must be dreadful. I really hope that the referral is the start of better times for you.

golemmings · 09/03/2012 06:41

Oh kick you must be gutted. That's an awful lot to take on board but at least they're now investigating and hopefully can sort at least most of it out. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this.

OP posts:
5ofus · 09/03/2012 10:02

kick hope things start to improve soon. Stay in touch, and let us know how you get on with the scans etc.

OrmIrian · 09/03/2012 10:30

Sorry you're feeling so bad kick Sad Hope the specialist can help you.

Run 1 week 2 done. All fine. DS1 though keeps getting stitch. I remember getting it sometimes in my epic run days but can't remember what to do about it. Anyone got any advice? it's really putting him off.

5ofus · 09/03/2012 13:06

The lovely Laura from the NHS podcasts reckons stitch is linked to dehydration. Perhaps some more fluid before he runs?
