Anyone want to join me? It means we should start 2012 being able to run 5k - now there's an incentive to stick with it.

ohbugrit · 19/02/2012 20:18

I genuinely hadn't thought of it like that ... it's crazy isn't it? Provided my limbs allow I will do this forever now. I was talking to DH recently, saying how I could just go for a run now, I wouldn't need a podcast, I could just run like a runner does.

I love couch to 5k. Love love love. And obviously you inspirational lot too Grin

musttidyupmusttidyup · 19/02/2012 21:49

What bugrit said Grin

5ofus · 19/02/2012 22:01

Hi All,

Lovely to hear your update go Grin

So here I am with a slightly longer update (not only was I on phone for my last update I was also more than halfway through a bottle of wine Grin). Week 5 Run 1 was a road run, seeing as the temperature had made it to 10 degrees I deemed it warm enough for me outside!

Not bad, I managed first 5 mins without stopping (a major achievement compared to 4 weeks ago!!), then second 5 mins I did walk for about 30 seconds, then third 5 mins I walked twice for probably about a minute in total.

Still - not a total wipeout as I told myself when I got home, firstly I'd gone from gym running to road running which I find more difficult, next I ran for 5 mins without stopping - and then almost did the other two runs. I also learned that long stretches of road are not good, and I'm must happier zipping down residential roads and alleys so I don't have a long stretch visibly ahead.

So, I've now had 3 days off as I've got a cold, snot everywhere and all sorts of phlegm on my chest. Damn kids infecting me with their germs.

Next plan - repeat Week 5 Run 1 again once this cold is gone!

Thanks for all your support - I wouldn't have made it this far without you!

kickassangel · 21/02/2012 04:12

hi,

we are on holiday this week & no running is happening. I am walking around 10 miles a day, though. Plan to drop back one or two runs then get going once school starts again next Mon

5ofus · 21/02/2012 09:08

I have a cold - I had a 12 hour snooze last night so I'm feeling better now. Will be back to running before long!

Have a great holiday Kickass Grin

Kids are back at school here and life as we know it has re-started...

kickassangel · 23/02/2012 04:24

Now I have post flying cold/sore throat. Have to work tomorrow but hoping to get some time at the gym.

5ofus · 24/02/2012 11:39

I have had a cold so I haven't run for a week Sad

But I have a slot in my diary between work calls so I'm going now (put my PE kit on first thing so I am in the zone) Smile

Thinking of doing the week 4 run once to see how it goes, then move back to Week 5.

I will let you know how I get on.

Hope all is well with the rest of you!

5ofus · 24/02/2012 14:07

That did not go well.

But I did it - and it's onwards and upwards from here.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 24/02/2012 18:55

That's the spirit 5ofus. Keep at it girl.

ohbugrit · 26/02/2012 07:30

Morning you lot :)

Quick update from phone. I'm still here, still running. My knee is holding up well. Doing week 7 runs just now and managing OK. Off out in am hour or so in fact.

Does anyone have proper running clothes? I have some tights which are fab but I'm looking for a running top or t-shirt which is long enough to cover my belly and has a decent pocket. And preferably doesn't cost the earth - have you seen the price of some of the stuff?!

How's everyone getting on? Will try to get to pc later and write properly :)

kickassangel · 26/02/2012 13:53

I am still I'll Sad not happy. Next week I have a slightly lighter schedule so could get to the gym but I have a persistent sore throat and cough so can't really do anything. I will have to drop back a few sessions once I do fat going again

So frustrating

Well done the rest of you

golemmings · 27/02/2012 04:33

Poor you kick. That's really dragging on, isn't it.

Bugrit I was wondering about kit too. I've got a reasonable amount if outdoors stuff although I picked up a pair if 3/4 length light weight bottoms from a charity shop which are fabulous. I also own a pair of long leggings which I used once when it was 2 or 3 degrees below but found them far too hot. In the January sale I picked up a pair of knee length running tight from m&s. Not used them yet. Waiting for better weather and thinner thighs!

Tops however do my head in. I was running in a long sleeved thermal t shirt but that's far too earn. Last week I upgraded to a short sleeved merino wool top which again was a bit too warm. I start off wearing a very lightweight high vis shell jacket too (decathlon so cheap) which was great over the winter but lasts about 5 mins now before I tie it round my waist.

I still haven't got round to buying any proper shoes either. Went to blacks to see what they had in the sale. Lots of bargains if you're a size 4 but they were all to big for me. I need something for mudfest in a couple of weeks so I'm minded to check out sports direct. I'm not sure how well they will survive so I may try and pick up a kids pair. They won't last (they're designed to carry 5 stone not 9!) But I don't want to spend lots on shoes to wear in waterfilled ditches!

May go internet shopping now since DS has decided sleep is overrated and I need to stay awake to ensure he has a proper feed so we might get some sleep before morning!

OP posts:
5ofus · 27/02/2012 10:22

Bugrit I'm running in M&S tracksuit bottoms, any old t shirt and a light jacket at the moment. I've looked at running tops but they seem to fitted for my liking. I have lumps and bumps I want to cover!

kickass hope you start to feel better soon. This cold of mine is a lingerer too, hence Friday's disastrous run!

go good luck with the shopping! My new running shoes are a size 8.5! I usually wear a 7, but the chap in the running shoe shop reckons you should add an additional size at least to keep your toes away from the end of the shoe.

After Friday's run, I decided to cycle instead on Sunday (fantastic weather!!) and did a 5.7 mile route round the local area. I can definitely feel the good effects this running has had, that was FAR easier than it would have been.

Today - to run or not to run? Might instead hit the leisure centre swimming pool later and actually start training for my sport relief mile!!

Happy running all Grin

golemmings · 27/02/2012 16:16

So what did you decide to do today 5?

I went for a run; second run on the 5k improvers programme. Last week's run was a bit crap because I kept losing audio and therefore no music but more importantly no interval cues. It surprised me by being run walk again; 300m run, 100m recovery walk. I had assumed it would be slow run, fast run. R1 seemed to come with random distances who h made it really hard to push the pace but r2 was much better. It was also flatter!

I broke my run at 3.2k to go and play on assault course. It was wet, slippery, muddy... But moderately fun. I then ran all the way back to the start and clocked whopping 6.43k in total. Average pace 6.57 mins/k but somewhere in the middle (i suspect the downhill bit at the start) the gps recorded 3.48 min/k or16k/h! I don't think its accurate and my fastest interval was 5.07 so it didn't last very long but I'm a bit smug about it.

To celebrate I went to sports direct on the way home and now own some pink and silver trail shoes. And a short sleeved wicking running top. and an arm band for my phone, some new headphones which won't fall out of my ears may have slipped into the bag as well but they were all in the sale do they don't count right?

Looking forward to going out for a run to check out my new shoes. It's currently pissing down so it'll be nice and muddy out tomorrow!

OP posts:
5ofus · 27/02/2012 22:49

Sounds fun go - and 6.43k is phenomenal! You definitely earned your Sports Direct bargains! Loving the statistics Grin

I went for leisure centre gym and did some treadmill running. What a sweaty mess I was by the time I finished.

I went for a repeat of week 4 and finished it so I'm moving back to week 5 on Wednesday! For statistics fans I was walking at 4.8km/hour and running at 7.7km/hr covering 3.3km in the 40 minute session.

ohbugrit · 28/02/2012 22:16

Hello my lovelies! Wanted to get on the pc to do a proper post (it's much easier to review earlier posts than on my phone) but DD is being a PITA so I'm stuck upstairs in the dark instead.

go it is so good to hear you sounding so positive, and very well done with the running - you've done brilliantly and I'm a bit jealous of your upcoming challenge if I'm honest!

Hope you feel better kick :)

5, well done on your progress - I find indoor running really tough so I am full of admiration for you.

Where's tidy got to?

I had a seminal moment this morning. A mum friend invited herself out running with me. Although she hadn't run for a while, she's probably half my weight or something, very active and the prospect of trying to keep up with a lithe fit person terrified me. I only said yes because I couldn't think of a polite way to refuse!

Anyway, much to my surprise I had to slow up for her! We walked for a bit halfway so she could catch her breath (I bet passing drivers thought we were walking for MY benefit!) and I had loads left in the tank at the end. My splits were all slow times for me.

I feel a bit guilty for delighting in it but what a confidence boost to be able to see myself in the same league as thin people! I can't make either of the local 5ks due to DH working but now I'm thinking I might have a bash at a 10k in 6 weeks time ... does that sound insane?

Feeling a bit giddy Grin

golemmings · 28/02/2012 22:54

Wow Bugrit - what a fab post!!! Looks can be very deceiving and I'm so glad your skinny fit friend is less fit than you - you've worked really hard to get where you are!!

I would have thought that a 10k race would be doable in 6 weeks; it's a pretty steep order but I would imagine having a cheering crowd will really spur you on. I'm sure I've seen lots of posts by folk saying that they'd trained over 8k and were running a 10k race and survived and you can always drop your speed a little if you need to. I'm saying this not because I think you will need too but because I think you should sign up for it and not worry too much about whether you will manage it or whether it is insane because I think its perfectly doable. Sorry; that probably doesn't make a lot of sense. Ds has decided sleep is for wimps so I'm struggling a little to string words together.

Do it, do it, do it.

The signing up for the 10k I want to do opens on Thursday but the race isn't until June.

OP posts:
musttidyupmusttidyup · 29/02/2012 10:46

Hey bugrit loved the story about your skinny friend! I would've been secretly pleased too :-)
I'm sure 10k is do-able. Was thinking about signing up for a 10k Race for life, seems a bit cheaty to do a 5k and there us a 10k not too far from me. It's June I think.
I'm still here and still running. DD's birthday yesterday, her first, and what with one thing and another and her and dS2 both being poorly I couldn't get out for my run before dark and I'm a bit of a scaredy cat in the proper dark especially with my headphones on, so I took the plunge and tried my shred DVD! Was fine actually. Quite intense but fitness wise I managed. Definitely need to work on the upper body.
Anyway, I'm a little afraid of dropping a run a week but was thinking if 2 runs plus 3 shreds a week and 2 days off? Then I can work my upper body too....
Anyway. My big news is I'm at my pre-babies, all of them, weight. So theoretically I could get into my wedding dress Grin.
Am still overweight though, maybe another 1/2 -1 stone. Will still be curvy then but that would be fab for me.

5ofus · 02/03/2012 10:03

Hi all

Lovely updates, I have 6 mins before a work call starts so I'm typing fast!!

Bugrit Loving your story. 10k would scare me right now but I'm still in week 5. Go for it! I'm finding treadmill running to be easier than road running. I think it's because I can't see how far I need to go, so I don't get disheartened. I think it helps as I can disengage my brain from my legs (and watch some TV!) and let my legs get on with it. I know the wanting to stop feelings come from my head so if I can distract it with the Simpsons that's good!

Musttidyup Fab news about your pre-baby weight. My target is my pre-DC3 weight which is about 2 stone away. I'm working on it! Ref: Shred - I guess you could see how things go. I've a few friends trying Shred for the first time and I'm getting mixed reports! Keep us updated Grin

Go how were the new shoes?

5ofus · 02/03/2012 10:15

Quick update from me: Week 5 Run 1 done (again on the treadmill!)

3 * 5 min runs straight through no stopping (woo hoo - go me!).

Week 5 Run 2 today, 2 * 8 min runs and I'm feeling OK about it. I'll let you know how I get on!

Good news from me is my stroppy ankle has settled, don't know if it's new trainers or the glucosamine supplement, or the week off running (or a combo of all three!) I get hot knees after my runs but no pain Grin

golemmings · 02/03/2012 11:31

5 great news about your ankle! Week 5 is generally harder on your brain than your lungs and legs. Believe you can do it because you can and you will. Bet when you started 3x5mins seemed impossible.

tidy congratulations on the weight loss. I have half a stone to go and I really need to shred. I did it once, enjoyed it but haven't made the time or effort to do it again. I really should. I have the major a week tomorrow so I need some upper body strength quite urgently.

The shoes are brilliant. Went for a short run on Wednesday across the fields and there was no slipping or sliding on the mud. The new top was lovely too. Weather was glorioous and I didn't get too hot. Phone holder was fab;lovely to he able to see the map being generated or the stats changing as you run and new running over ear headphones still bounce out of my right ear so I think its my ears rather than the phones.

Signed up for my 10k this morning. It takes place in June, the day before my birthday so I will be a 10k runner before I turn 38. How exciting!

That means I belong here having started last night.

Welcome OrmIrian Grin

www.mapmyrun.com/s/routes/view/run-jog-map/glenlivet-distillery/15392786 This is the route for the 10k, which is in 6 weeks time.

I'm not sure whether to sign up.

GP says do it.

DH says don't do it.
