Anyone want to join me? It means we should start 2012 being able to run 5k - now there's an incentive to stick with it.

Brilliant 5ofus! It's amazing how quickly your body gets used to it isn't it. and it feels great Smile

ohbugrit · 28/01/2012 20:14

Well done you two!

My next run is tomorrow night but as the CID have cordoned off the park I usually run through after a woman was assaulted there the other night, I think I'll leave the headtorch at home and run the streets instead. Yikes.

I'm eyeing up a 5k race on the 4th March. Anyone else got similar plans?

kickassangel · 28/01/2012 21:49

Did w4r2 yesterday and slowed right down. Now running at a walking pace but legs felt much better and I did the 5 min run ok

golemmings · 28/01/2012 22:51

Oh my goodness bugrit you are seriously fast. .
Seriously, 1km in 5 mins is a 25minute 5k. It's the kind of time proper runners dream about!

Like your plan, kick. I think I need to do something like that. I need to have tues, wed, fri as running days since the kayaking race season will be starting soon which will take out most Sundays and i need to train with my new partner on saturdays which will be fun.

5 how did you find your 3 minutes?

tidy you're sounding like such a proper runner now. I'm impressed.

I suppose I ought to think about going out myself; I meant to go out last night, and today in daylight but I've failed so far. DS hasn't been too good do he's really hard to settle in the evenings so its about half 8 or 9 before I'm free to go which then makes supper far too late...

Mind you, I have a friend who has offered to babysit so I can run, which is fabulous. She's coming over after school next Tuesday to prevent me having another breakdown look after dd while I take DS for his jabs to avoid dd and I throwing tantrums at each other in public but is happy to stay on and give me some time out which is just lovely.

I will go out tomorrow. DH says he needs a couple of hours to work but wasn't prepared to work thus evening (which I get) but also regards the time between him getting up with DS, usually between 4 and 5 and dd getting up at 7, as his downtime too which annoys me. I wouldn't mind so

OP posts:
golemmings · 28/01/2012 22:58

...much if managed to read half as many books as him! I'm taking the view if he wants to reread books for that early part of the day rather than working, then he can have the kids for an hour whilst I ring bells and another 35 mins whilst I run. I'll then let him have the afternoon in peace to learn more about phonics than his yr1 class.

OP posts:
ohbugrit · 29/01/2012 09:35

That's good of your friend go, make sure you take up all the offers of help you can find. I'd happily help if I was close enough.

Well done kick, I think slowing yourself down is hard but important in the early weeks.

I was shocked myself at that speed - I am sure it was downhill with the wind behind me! Quite proud of myself though - my BMI is still about 32 and I'm about 4 stone overweight so it's astonishing to be able to do this.

golemmings · 29/01/2012 13:06

Finally got round to w7r2. 6.07 minute km on average and just over 4km run. Found where the posh people live with their palatial mansions, walled gardens, dove cores. Never been that far down the road before.

DH got more sleep last night but started his lesson planning when he got up at 6. Since I have been ringing and running this morning, I'm taking the kids out this pm so today has worked well.

OP posts:
kickassangel · 29/01/2012 13:11

Bugrit I'm about the same weight wise. Annoyingly, I haven't lost any weight doing this. I hope that when the various bits of me stop aching I can pick up speed. My legs do feel a lot better though so obviously it was the right thing to do

ohbugrit · 29/01/2012 13:13

6 minute km average over 4k is superb go, really really good - my 5 minute one was just my best split, not an average!

golemmings · 29/01/2012 18:13

Good for you, kick. Glad you're legs are feeling better.

Bugrit, what app are you using which gives you km splits? I've been using rundouble which only gives you details for intervals. I've also been looking at mapmyrun which I've used to log runs on the pc when I get home. Its app appears to give you split information at a time or distance that you specify. It doesn't however give you an interval training programme like rundouble does though. I think you can use both ay the same time which might be the way to go.

OP posts:
ohbugrit · 29/01/2012 18:20

I use the podcasts for timing and run Endomondo on my phone to log each run. It maps my route, time, distance, pace etc then records it all on Endomondo.com. It tells you splits, but also your fastest km or mile, and tons of stats.

Week 3 Run 2 done Grin

I missed the running with my sisters due to a hangover and a lie in, so I hit the gym when I got back.

3 mins seemed to me to be very big leap from 90 seconds but I was amazed to find I could do it and finish. I was pretty tired and longing for the 3 mins to be up. I am finding having fewer runs is better. I remember week 1 with the 8 runs being far more difficult to complete than week 3 with the 4 runs. It's still 9 mins of running in total.

I'm concerned about the transition to week 4. Going from 9 mins total running to 16 mins seems to be a big leap to me...

golemmings I'm spotting beautiful houses too - it's a hobby of mine too. I found a street full of not large but really well looked after, well loved houses. Pleased to hear your friend is helping out. What a lovely thing to do for you!

musttidyupmusttidyup · 30/01/2012 19:25

I ran through the hospital grounds yesterday and found a shortcut into a road which I have never driven down as its a dead end. Beautiful houses must be for all the rich docs Smile. Big house Envy

golemmings · 30/01/2012 23:45

Isn't running just the best thing for house envy?

5, I found all the way through that the leaps were far harder intellectually than they were physically. They tend not to increase the total amount of running bt much, if at all, but redistribute where your recovery periods occur. It kept surprising me that I could run as far as I could; it still does tbh!

OP posts:
ohbugrit · 31/01/2012 07:03

5, don't worry about the big leaps - you doubt yourself but you can do it, and you'll feel so great when you realise that. You're now fitter than you imagine.

I managed a ponderous 25 minute run on Monday night, despite route alterations (pervert on the loose Angry), flat battery halfway through the podcast, dog of many tiny poos and a necessary pause to get a pint of milk on the way home. But no real walking intervals and it felt comfortable so I am very happy with that.

Legs ache but I've decided against an extra rest day today because I'm utterly miserable and tired and at least when I run I feel less shitty.

Re house envy, it's best at night when you can peek in the windows as you go by. There's one for sale on the other side of town and I've already picked my soft furnishings. For when I win the lottery!

musttidyupmusttidyup · 31/01/2012 10:08
Grin
5ofus · 31/01/2012 10:22

Thanks for the encouragement my running crew. I still can't believe I've done 3 minute runs!! You're right though, my doubt is mostly in my head although my ankles have tried to get in on the action. I've bought some Glucosamine supplements after reading round on t'Internet.

Week 3 Run 3 is scheduled for today but it's very very cold (I'm on the South coast so to me 2 degrees c is COLD). DP working until 8 so I'll head for the gym later. Not the same opportunity for house surveying but it's WARM which is very important to me. When I did one of them last week in the cold my glasses kept steaming up which was comical but offputting.

And a friend of mine has just announced she's doing ironman in switzerland (google it) - mucho respect for mucho fitness...

Happy Running Grin

kickassangel · 31/01/2012 16:50

today should be a running day, but I've decided to wait another day before running again. yesterday was busy at work, i was on my feet for several hours. when I went to bed, my legs were aching exactly where shin splints kick in, and I've even got a bit of a rash (I do not understand how putting pressure on muslces does that, but still). So I think I need to wait another day & I'll see if I get time to go for a walk this afternoon.

But I'm worried that I'll get used to not running - so ask me & stalk me & make me come back on here before the end of the week, saying I've done another run.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 31/01/2012 19:22

Hi all. Got caught up in my house stalkingenvy tonight and found myself further from home than usual so ended up doing 5.8 km. Smile
Re losing weight - I've found my weightloss has really come on since I started running the longer times.
I was about 3- 3 1/2 stone overweight when I started 'slimming' in August - nothing crazy as still bf DD but being careful and not eating too much shite. Was losing 1/2-1 lb a week. Slowed right down when I started running (prob a natural lull in the weightloss also ) but have lost 5 or 6 lb in January. 30 lb in total, about a stone to go. Got into a pair of size 14 skinnies though Grin Grin [griin].
BlushNot bragging just hoping it might help spur in people at the start of get fit journey.

ohbugrit · 31/01/2012 19:39

That has cheered me up musttidy, no more intervals for me.

No run tonight, sore arse Angry

golemmings · 31/01/2012 19:51

Number 1 wuss here. It's not got above freezing all day, DS has had his jabs and I'm knackered. I'm staying in, eating bangers and mash and watching holby city instead. How classy am io?

Still, dd and I survived today much better than last week. Mind you, she took dinner into her own hands again. My plan was to change DS and then cook fish fingers and veg. As soon as Boy's nappy was on I came back to the kitchen to find a pan of tortilleni on the stove. Stove wasn't lit and there was no water in the pan but who am I to argue with a 2 1/2yr old who knows what she wants
for tea?

Might see if I can run 4k with the buggy tomorrow... Or i'll go when DH gets in and leave him to feed the girl.

Impressed at nearly 6k tidy, and the weightloss.
I've lost over half a stone since I started running but that's a combination of no dairy, bf and running. I put a long vest t-shirt on this morning and over a pair of tights it looked pretty good. It didn't match my short and wide mental image at all. I currently have fewer curves than I've had since dd was conceived and my legs look as lean as they did when I was at my skinniest so I was really chuffed.

Phone has eaten previous posts and I've forgotten what I was going to say to bugrit and 5.

Oooh, and did you see Gambled' thread the other day? She's an alarming number of weeks pregnant so she's not running...

OP posts:
golemmings · 31/01/2012 19:55

5 gym sounds like a brilliant idea.

I think its cold enough out there that you could take damage.

kick, tomorrow is the day for both of us.

bugrit, what on earth have you done to hurt your arse?

OP posts:
ohbugrit · 31/01/2012 20:17

Grin tortellini toddler!

I have no idea what I have done, probably spending the last few nights sleeping upright in an armchair next to DD, but my coccyx is bloody sore.

Painkillers tonight, run in in morning before work. Don't laugh.

golemmings · 31/01/2012 23:20

Hope you and dd have a better night bugrit.

OP posts:
ohbugrit · 01/02/2012 13:05

Thanks for asking , no run this morning, not such a bad night but no time to get out as DH was sleeping after looking after DD all night. Maybe tomorrow because he's going out tonight so I can't run then.
