Anyone want to join me? It means we should start 2012 being able to run 5k - now there's an incentive to stick with it.

I did W2R2 at the gym on Thursday. It was my first venture into a gym for YEARS. Weather outside looked dreadful and sky was black! Travelled the same distance as W2R1 which suggests GPS accuracy was OK. Had two days off now contemplating W2R3 Grin

bugrit after 10 days I'd probably try W5 again. But that's just me. If you feel up to week 6 go for it.

I've never done Race for Life before ( I have never been a runner before!!) but it would give me a goal to focus on. Might see if my sisters are planning to and make a team family out of it.

golemmings · 22/01/2012 12:53

I've been rubbish this week. No runs since Monday. I have failed to clean or tidy the house, or go ringing. I think the last 3 months finally caught to with me and whilst I can cope, I decided that I didnt want to have to. DS has been a bit unsettled since I ate cheese over a week ago and now has a cold but dd has been napppy free and dry for two days. clearly being introspective and a mardy cow don't actually agree with me and I feel worse for the self indulgence.

Today I will run. Tomorrow is DH's first day at school on a non-nursery day so I have 2 children. Dd and I have agreed we're going to do some gardening. I also have the shred dvd so I might give the children a laugh and we can do that. I'm a bit concerned that it might cause more weightloss though. I've lost 6lb since Christmas if our scales are to be believed. Whilst part of me is overjoyed 'cos I generally don't lose weight easily, the rest of me is concerned because I'm still breastfeeding and I think my dairy and green veg free diet might explain why I am quite so knackered and intolerant but I'm not sure how to fix it without eating my body weight in Mrs Crimbles stem ginger cake on a daily basis... Oh the hardship.

lemmings, don't be hard on yourself. If anyone is allowed to wallow a bit it's you. Sometimes you just have to let stuff catch you up once in a while. Having said that, you will feel good once you've had a run.

I'm trying to think about diet for you. What about eggs, lots of iron and vit D in there. Fish? Nuts are also great for energy, and divine with dried fruit like apricots. I sympathise, I ended up spending some time on exclusion duets with both my DC and it's tough. If it's a long term thing then get yourself a calcium and vit D supplement. I take a B vit supplement daily anyway for energy, that might help too?

Well done kick and 5 :)

I managed week 6 run 1 this morning. Legs were fine but my poor asthmatic, post-infection chest wasn't happy. I did it though, despite being blue by the end. Makes a change from being bright red I guess Grin

5ofus · 23/01/2012 09:18

Agree lemmings - you're still here. If you need to step off the treadmill for a day or two you know you can pick it up again. Just keep checking in here and be kind to yourself...

bugrit well done on W6R1! After time off it's always hard to pick up again. I know I would have gone back a week or so as I'm a sap.

I did W2R3 last night at the gym. I was a sweaty mess by the end but did complete the whole thing so it must have been a good workout. Best of all I felt just awesome having done it.

I'm planning to do the week 2 run again tomorrow on the roads, before moving on to W3 on Thursday.

I'm taking it slowly as I've never been fit, never done running before or done a lot of exercise so I'm letting my body adjust to the new regime!

I did look at the Race For Life website last night and the local one is badly timed but I think the one closer to my sister is on a better date so I've suggested we both do it.

golemmings · 23/01/2012 13:02

5 enjoy your race for life. I have aspirations for a 10k in june. It's the day before my birthday so my fitness plan is now: 10k @ 37; half marathon @38; devizes to Westminster canoe race again @39 and a marathon @40.

I failed to get out last night. I have a (nother) cold and I just Fe washed out. DS also has a cold so is waking for a feed every hour or two overnight. Annoyingly he'll go 3-4 hrs during the day but tbh, with dd aswell I can't manage to feed him much more than that... DH has started back to school full time today so I'm learning what to do home alone with two kids... He's out tonight too so it'll be tomorrow before I can do anywhere...

musttidyupmusttidyup · 24/01/2012 18:46

Think I will book in for a 5k race for life too. Will keep me running if I know I'm racing in June. Have been continuing doing week 9 run 3, so I know I'm doing the full time. 5.3km today.

ohbugrit · 24/01/2012 20:12

Hi folks.

Hope you survived flying solo with both of them, go :)

I think I'll maybe do the race for life this year. I would feel bad not doing it, if I'm able to run the distance!

W6R2 today, my poor chest isn't happy but I managed it. Might repeat it before trying for the 25 minutes.

In other news, DH did w1r1 today!

Must dash, Mr Tesco is pulling up outside with my wine Grin

golemmings · 24/01/2012 20:48

mmm wine. Need wine. Need whine too. Bloody awful day. Well it probably wasn't but it culminated with me failing to manage two children, incinerating tea and dh walking through the door an hour and a half later than I expected, me throwing two children at him in tears and telling him I was going for a run.

By the time I came back from w7r1 dd was just finishing her pudding, ds was calmly being cuddled and war had not broken out.

Since we have a veg defecit (dh bought he veg at the market on Saturday but only appears to have bought enough for two days of meals) and I have burned the leek and the remaining carrots he told me he'll fix something but appears to have fallen asleep with dd. Yes I'm much calmer but not quite calm enough to be reasonable.

Crying whilst running makes breathing quite hard and I wouldn't recommend it. Will probably go out tomorrow again and see if I can do any better.

[edit: dh has definitely fallen asleep upstairs; I can hear him snoring oer the baby monitor...]

Tomorrow is another day and anyway, this, too, shall pass.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 24/01/2012 21:12

Oh golemmings what a sad post. I'm so sorry you're feeling so unutterably shit at the moment. It's understandable you poor thing. Get a glass of wine and have some toast and peanut butter for your tea. Have another good cry and remember tomorrow is another day. Give those lovely DCs a big kiss and remember to give DH a list next time.

kickassangel · 24/01/2012 21:19

Oh lemmings, the joys of family life!

I did w3r3 today and found it a lot easier than anticipated. I know you're meant to wait a day but I shall run tomorrow am as I can't run on thu.

I am both proud and embarrassed to admit that the 3 min runs at4.2 mph is both the quickest and longest time I have ever run!

ohbugrit · 24/01/2012 21:24

Oh go, it sounds like a shitty day all round :(

FWIW, the having-two-small-children-to-entertain-all-day-in-the-depths-of-winter-while-on-an-exclusion-diet-and-one-of-them-cries-all-the-bloody-time thing was me last year, and goodness it is so, so tough. You just feel guilty all the time, it's impossible to give out the attention you want to. Not to mention how energy-sapping it is. There was a great thread around that time, started by Bumperlicious IIRC, where loads of people gave advice/tips/sympathy. I will try to link it for you.

I know you have had so much happening in your life that it is more than just the day to day kids stuff, I don't mean to patronise. Sometimes though, little helpful things here and there can make a big difference I guess.

Agree very much with tidy's sound advice to get hold of some wine and put your feet up for a bit. You bloody deserve every little break you can get, you really do.

ohbugrit · 24/01/2012 21:32

I think this is the one, don't know if it will help but I found some inspiration to help me avoid infanticide/insanity there

PS In your shoes I might be tempted to wake DH and send him out for fish and chips :)

golemmings · 24/01/2012 23:03

ah. My dad rang, which woke DH. Fish and chips were procured and have been eaten washed down with a whole pint of beer. My fist whole pint in a twelve month. Hopefully ds will sleep well on summer lightning. I don't feel entirely sober though.

Both children have been asleep since 8ish. I'm about to sit down and read Bugrit's thread that will save my sanity!

Feeling much better now there is no risk of throttling small children.Thank you guys, it's really good to know you're there. Think its time for bed too.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 25/01/2012 10:49

Glad your evening improved go. You've got me craving a bit fat pint now Grin. Am going out with DH on friday night for a meal and a couple of drinks. When I asked my mum to babysit I realised its the first time she's sat all 3 DCs which means its well over a year since we went out together.Blush so I think I'll have that pint then.

kickassangel · 26/01/2012 03:19

Did w4r1 this morning, but only just. My shins ache so badly after a couple of minutes that it's hard to keep going. Also, it was only 14 hours since I finished W3r3. I think I'll wait til Sat to do the next run - v busy with work for next 2 days. I'm thinking that I've got to the point where it starts to get hard for me, but will keep going, evn if I have to do each run twice before progressing.

fish & chips - normally I don't like them, but living in the US, I sometimes get a strong craving. Like now!

musttidyupmusttidyup · 26/01/2012 21:41

Mmmm. Fish and chips yummmm.
Kickass think you should really give a day between runs. Need to give your body time to recover. Sounds like shin splints which hurts like shite.
Maybe do some upper body stuff on the rest days instead?
Did my run today without the usual get running app commentary. Planned my route in advance so I knew i'd cover 5k and it was good - I didn't miss the 10 minute markers abduct made my run a bit faster to get home quicker Smile.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 26/01/2012 21:42

and and me

musttidyupmusttidyup · 26/01/2012 21:43

Arse

kickassangel · 27/01/2012 01:23

yep, I know I should leave more time, but it was then or not for several days. Debating whether to try tomorrow morning, or may opt for a lie-in & do it Sat morning. The problem with that is that I know I have 1 1/2 hours at the gym Sun pm when dd has tennis, so I end up running Sat & Sun, then start the week again on Mon.

Why can't there be an even number of days in the week? 6 days would be goo - 2 of them the weekend, still, obviously.

5ofus · 27/01/2012 11:20

golemmings we all have days like that. I've lost it more times than I can count with my three (who are 6, 4 and 2). Big hugs. It's a phase and it will pass. It does get easier.

kickass could you do cycling on Sun PM? I read something online about cross training being recommended to reduce the risk of injuries for new runners. I'm planning to get my bike out and add a cycling session to my three per week runs.

musttidyup fabulous. I've just switched from NHS podcasts to an app, I find my own music to be more motivational than the NHS music.

Just checking in. I did Week 2 run for a 4th day on Tuesday, and I'm planning to move on to Week 3 today! 3 mins is scaring me a bit. I'll let you know how I get on!

ohbugrit · 27/01/2012 19:17

Evening ladies, how are we all?

5, 3 minutes is achievable, go get 'em!

tidy I am impressed with your tactic to improve your times. Very impressed.

kick I had awful shin splints for the first few weeks, and I agree that leaving longer between the runs is important. I had bad shin splints many years ago and they can easily get so bad that you just can't run. Take care.

How are things today go, hopefully a bit less stressful?

I repeated wk6 run2 again today because my wheezy lungs aren't loving the frosty air and I'm still coughing up unpleasant stuff. I managed PBs all round though, got a km under my belt in 5m:02s so I don't think I have any excuses to skip out on run 3 now!

DH did run 2 today, I am very proud of him.

kickassangel · 27/01/2012 20:59

ok - i haven't done anything since weds am, and dd has a half hour tennis lesson soon, so i can just get a quick w4r2 in while she does that. as i'm at the gym every sunday anyway, then i think it's prob best to run on sun, tue & thu, with sat being my 'catch up' day if i miss any.

shins since feel a bit stiff/sore, but only very vaguely, so hopefully i'll be ok

musttidyupmusttidyup · 28/01/2012 18:51

Evening ladies. This afternoon I ran off my hangover and did 5.6 km. tonight we are having fish and chips. Bliss. Grin

5ofus · 28/01/2012 19:16

I did it! 3 whole minutes (twice)!!!!

This is the longest I've run in YEARS. I'm chuffed to bits. Knees hurt a bit after though but are fine now. I am planning to go with my littlest sister tomorrow for Week 3 Run 2.

DP has downloaded Week 1 but is still to try it out.

5ofus · 28/01/2012 19:16

Oh and well done musttidyup
