New thread everyone!

Rest for me today - just six days to go and I've woken with a sore throat .....

OP posts:
Wheelybug · 14/10/2011 16:15

Is it LFD this ? I got confused I thought it was LFD it... sigh... of to practise mantra...

Moshi - sorry meant to say earlier I will pass on the info to my bro so don't be suprised if he accosts you. He's quite nice really Grin. Although a bit manic ...

Now I spent my whole morning (whilst waiting in for a loss assessor) researching kids bikes, then met up with a friend who offerred me one that her daughter has grown out off. It might be a 12 inch and therefore too big but think I might get then get her a balance bike for christmas so she'll have both. Anyway, am sure that's not that interesting to anyone other than me (and dd2 !) .

Great to see your plans for running - I think that's the sort of thing I plan to do once I'm through with GSR and going on to the Brighton half.

4 runs (LSR, tempo, intervals, easy and obviously stick in some hills at some point)
2 swims (one being my lesson so you don't get that much done)
Body Balance class (pilates/stretching)

Although I will have to do 2 of the runs on the same day as the swim class and the body balance class otherwise I won't be able to fit them in but that means I have 2 complete days rest and one day when its only a swim.

Wheelybug · 14/10/2011 16:21

Almost forgot it was friday - so special good luck to -

rhet
Moshi
Sticky
Piff

Looking forward to hearing all about it.

and Rhet - you are clearly getting into this racing lark. You are now calling them races and not 'timed running with other people' Grin. Go get 'em !

stickylittlefingers · 14/10/2011 16:38

I like reading this thread so much :)

No running for me today, I've been on a school trip with DD1 (which is way more exhausting, I'm knackered! How do you teachers do it?). Struck by the same thing as Moshi - not a single child in the class was even a bit chubby, let along fat. Which means, statistically, that there must be a lot of chubby children sitting in another classroom. But this is a "nice" area with "nice" parents. I'm pretty lax because we actually own a telly Shock which the girls are allowed to watch Shock Shock. There's a lot of hummus eating fell-runners around here!

They're busy cutting all the sports facilities round here. I assume we are not alone in this - local authorities are all strapped for cash. I can't imagine that will help the obesity epidemic.

Right, off to find something to ask all your opinions on...

stickylittlefingers · 14/10/2011 17:05

right - I don't know anything about Jack Daniels (a person, not the drink!), VDOTs or whatever else. This link was on the Durham tri site (apparently they are welcoming to people who just run, so it's not out of the question for me after all!). I was interested in the stats it threw up (not least that I'm not doing easy runs at an easy pace). I thought it might be interesting with regard to the train/recover discussion above...

Pawsnclaws · 14/10/2011 17:14

Hmm, can't help feeling that just telling people to eat less falls into the No Shit Sherlock category of political policy Hmm.

OP posts:
FairyBasslet · 14/10/2011 17:24

Sticky - I'm laughing at the 'hummus eating fell runners', but round here everyone seems to do the school run in their exercise gear. When I did my first 10k a year and a half ago, there were something like 7 or 8 parents doing it and the headmistress! Very few fat kids. Very health and fitness conscious. A far cry from where I grew up.

Good luck to all this weekend's racers. Looking forward to some great race reports.

MoshiMoshi · 14/10/2011 18:41

Good luck rhet, sticky and pif. Get plenty of sleep....

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 14/10/2011 19:04

Good luck people, rhet, Moshi, Sticky, Piff.

Am going to try and do a 3 mile gentle run tomorrow after last weeks efforts.

Pawsnclaws · 14/10/2011 19:08

Ooh rhet is tomorrow not Sunday! Go rhet, go rhet ....

OP posts:
rhetorician · 14/10/2011 19:31

yes, tomorrow, 11am. It's a fairly small field (750 runners) so I am a bit worried that I will trail in near the back - I don't envisage going sub 1 hour, given that my friend hasn't done much training. But it will be nice - it's forest trails.

Similarly, I live on a nice cul-de-sac with nice middle class parents and there are no fat children on the street. But I also live in the middle of one of the most deprived areas of the city, so you quite often see very overweight children in the supermarket and round about.

I think the main problem is that people can't and therefore don't cook, so small children never learn what proper food tastes like. Fact of the matter is, if you are not doing physical labour (lots of walking, at the very least) you have to compensate some way for this.

peachsmuggler · 14/10/2011 19:31

Good luck this weekend lovely runners Rhet, Moshi, Sticky and piff.

What a beautiful day in London, clear blue skies all the way. Spent afternoon in the park. Have made veg curry and onion bhajis for dinner and DP had the foresight to get some chocolate cheesecake on way home. Sorry fanny, will this earn me a three match ban?!? Grin

rhetorician · 14/10/2011 19:32

I am of course blaming a possible crappy time on my friend...some mate I am!

peachsmuggler · 14/10/2011 19:33

Forest trails sounds lively Rhet, hope you enjoy it!

bonkers20 · 14/10/2011 20:57

Good luck for tomorrow Rhet. I heart forest trails.

I haven't had time to read the race reports from last week yet. I'm sure you all did brilliantly!

This w/e I will dropping DS1 at school at 8.15am for a away rugby game tomorrow and driving him to Ely for an away rugby game on Sunday with his club. I will be forcing encouraging DS2 to play inside sports or chess or something.

Training for my 10 miler starts in ernest next week....honestly!

RunningAllDay · 14/10/2011 21:50

Good luck weekend runners - I Envy you... the feeling afterwards anyway! Hope you all get running weather.

futurity · 14/10/2011 21:52

Thinking of you all this weekend..especially MoshiFarah ...I look forward to weeping with envy at your race report!

orangehead · 14/10/2011 22:13

Not caught up properly yet as evil dh wants to get on the laptop to do ebaying.
Good luck for the weekend rhet, Moshi (hope you feeling better* Sticky and Piff
Got to lidl today got pants and jacket the pants feel weird not sure about them, they might feel better after a wash. The jacket too big, so need to take it back tomorrow for a small Smile. But dh says they look really good.
Got appointment sorted for ds2 for thursday. This is with jigsaw rather than camhs and already they seem more on the ball than camhs. So fingers crossed.

orangehead · 14/10/2011 22:16

Oh peachsyou weren't moaning anyway were you? The last few weeks are hard so you entitled anyway. I also love hearing about pregnancies Smile

DebiTheScot · 14/10/2011 22:20

bookmarking. Trying to catch up but am only at 9am yesterday morning so it could be a while.

Should be in bed really since I have to get up at 5am for the school trip but I won't sleep until normal bedtime so no point. Have downloaded several podcasts and bought Women's Running to keep me occupied on the bus.

bonkers20 · 14/10/2011 22:24

I've been listening to The Sound of Music cd in the car with the DSs this week. Now I've associated Mother Superior singing Climb Every Mountain with Let's Fucking Do It! It's the same sentiment isn't it.

bonkers20 · 14/10/2011 22:26

Doesn't Richard Branson live in Abingdon? I've met him you know. He helped me out of a canoe

sfxmum · 14/10/2011 22:26

Orange hope the appointment for DS lives up to expectations and that it is helpful

good luck Rhet, Moshi, Sticky and piff, I am quite certain you will all do well or at the very least enjoy it Wink

dd has discovered an allegiance to Wales since we went there over our Summer holidays and is insisting on waving the flag she bought in support for tomorrows game Hmm no one watches sports at our house but hey could be worst Grin

dh arrived with lovely Cherry G&B and some wine, it would be rude to refuse

rhetorician · 14/10/2011 22:45

grr, having usual pre-race sock trauma (e.g. only one of the preferred racing socks is actually, well, available); I'm tired too, which is not helpful, somehow.

I really hope Wales get to the final tomorrow even if they did beat Ireland my mother is a Jones, you know.

probably won't be back to report until later afternoon, so talk to you all then
x

MoshiMoshi · 14/10/2011 22:46

There is science behind our YLFDT mantra, people! A book I am reading ("Run - The Mind-Body Method of Running By Feel") talks about a 2009 study that found that uttering profanity (author is American - they use funny expressions don't they?) reduces pain sensitivity! There you go. If feeling the pain during a race, swear a bit a la fanny and you will get through the bad patch more easily.

Off to bed now. Two more sleeps...

fannybanjo · 14/10/2011 22:49

Orange glad you've received an appointment and hope it turns out well for you and DS.

peach after the appeal, I've decided to reinstate you to honorary thread mascot, so, unless you defer to diet coke, consider it a warning. Grin
