New thread everyone!

Rest for me today - just six days to go and I've woken with a sore throat .....

OP posts:
encyclogirl · 10/10/2011 11:36

word not work grrr

StrangewaysHereICome · 10/10/2011 11:39

I'm back, 8 lovely and not too painful miles despite the wind. Hurray that's the furthest I have run in well over a year, whoop whoop!

I hope I didn't offend anyone with my 'poxy' 8 mile comment Blush. I am not undermining all your fantastic achievements. It's just I have had this run planned since June!! I had worked up to 7 miles after DS's arrival and the day I was going to do it I buggered over the pushchair and broke my arm and couldn't run for 6 weeks so had to pretty much start again! So I needed to get it out of the way and vent some frustration Shock.

I suppose I had better get on with something useful now Wink. Enjoy your lunch sticky

rhetorician · 10/10/2011 11:42

hi encyclo do you have high winds down there? it's mad up here - think there will be trees down again later on.

I'm afraid I don't know why you have a sore bum! I woke up in the night feeling a kind of ache in my hip...sympathy pain with DP, who has to lie on her right hip, but as she is now large (poor love, I don't think she's gained any weight this time beyond the bump, but has a lot of fluid, and she has a small frame) this is very sore.

Am feeling very Angry with my mother (Dr No you will be familiar with these particular shenanigans :o), but will save that for another day. Need to get out the door.

Hope running is good, and that the racers are resting in appropriate style (think sofa, coffee, nice cake...)

encyclogirl · 10/10/2011 11:49

Oooh! Have to post this. Just got a text from dd's teacher. Apparently she's sitting at her desk quietly writing. Score!

Hatwoman · 10/10/2011 11:59

quick wave. well done to all the racers this weekend and thanks for the reports.

I have two very important things to tell you:

  • to add to the personal habits theme: what about noses? I'm quite a snotty runner. unless the weather is very dry and warm I'm constantly blowing/wiping my nose when running. it's very inoffensive and watery (at least that's what I tell myself when i use my sleeve) nice.
  • I had a running dream: I got up early one morning and went for a run stark naked, as normal people do. entirely normal. except that as I headed back into the village (which had become a town full of parents and toddlers doing a nursery-ryhmes-in-the-park-and-cooking-class) I realised that it wasn't normal. oh no not normal at all. I squatted behind a wall wondering how the hell I was going to get home. By this point my nakedness had become slightly less and I was wearing dd's school shirt and a towel wrapped round by bum. but I knew I had to leave them by the wall. woke up before working out how to get home.
Pawsnclaws · 10/10/2011 12:33

I absolutely cannot keep up with this thread! I've literally just finished reading the last two days and I go to post and a load of new stuff appears. Stop writing, people! Maybe we need some sub-categories ...

Well done to ALL yesterday's runners, june, cherry, muffin, running, futurity (is that me or does that sound like something nice to eat?)

OK so slightly longer race report.

Had a lovely but very abstemious evening out in Chester on Saturday, up bright and early on Sunday, nice porridge breakfast in my room overlooking the start and ensured all digestive issues sorted. Ahem. futurity - for me that means no wheat, dairy or alcohol in the week before a run, or I know I will pay dearly.

My friend and I wandered down to the start and pretty much shat ourselves became quite apprehensive, quickly realising that this was definitely a "runners" marathon, not like my last one which had a very fun-run atmosphere. No fancy dress. Everyone else very lean and fit looking. We joined the start at the back which was marked 5 hours +. Out of 3,000 starters there were, I shit ye not, only maybe 20 of us in the 4 hours + start area. Gulp.

The route was really pretty, through Chester centre then out into the countryside, over into Wales (which I found ridiculously exciting). Weather was a lot warmer than I'd expected, but no rain. Literally within the first mile - first uphill section even - I felt my calf "pop" and twinge but ignored it as you do.

All was well at the halfway mark and we were doing fine and passing loads of people (not hard as we started literally at the back). The headwind was picking up quite badly though and any exposed bits were really tough, being buffeted around pretty badly. My shoulders are really bad today from hunching over!

At 16 miles I felt good apart from the nagging calf pain which was now hurting all the time and not just uphill. I asked my friend to go on because I didn't want to hold her back (I thought my calf was going to completely go any minute). I then made the stupid mistake of taking my rings off my swollen ring finger and putting them on my little finger. Oh dear. One mile later off they pinged.

I was right next to a large drain and there was no sight of them. I looked for a couple of minutes then started crying Blush as I was sure they had gone for good. Two lovely people took pity on the blubbing beetroot snotfest in front of them and stopped to help me look. It took about 10 minutes in total but we found my engagement ring rolled back down the hill and my wedding ring in the dirt under a hedge!

Anyway, so by 17 miles I'd lost my stride a bit and stopping for a bit had made my leg start throbbing - so I trotted on as best I could and finally made it - 5 hours 36. My friend did it in 5.20.

Nice goody bag and medal, really good quality long sleeved top. I thought it was very well-organised and while the numbers of supporters weren't huge they were very friendly and enthusiastic. The course was very pretty, not massively hilly though I felt every incline unfortunately with my gammy leg.

Overall position 2,330th M/F position 574, old gimmer category position 133. Would've loved to get nearer 5.10-20, but I did my best. I think the mumsnet wooden spoon is safe in my sweaty hands for a while yet.

Oh yes and I did obviously at key moments mutter "YES LET'S FUCKING DO THIS!" Me and my friend had a good old snigger about that one.

Oh and knob alert - very low! Chester is obviously quite genteel!

Random wink there phone posting

StrangewaysHereICome · 10/10/2011 13:00

Fabulous race report paws and brilliant running. Having pretty much decided not to a marathon next year, you've made me want to do another one Confused. Totally brilliant, you and your friend should be very proud Grin

I can't keep up here either!

muffinchops · 10/10/2011 13:04

Wow Paws - that is AWESOME, even more so given the dramatic circumstances of your race. Talk about having your head completely messed about with the ring incident and the calf issue - as if it's not enough you had to contend with. Huge congrats on your marathon and I hope your calf gets sorted.

Thank you v much for all the welcomes. Don't think I can keep up with this super speedy thread (clearly symptomatic of its posters) but will try and dip in where I can.

PS I never used to get those people that said that running was addictive and it changed their lives but OMG I do now! I'm still floating on an endorphin high from yesterday which was a huge mental challenge for me and it's the first time in ages post 3 kids that I've stepped outside the comfort zone, done something for me and set myself a challenge and met it. Now I really want to carry on. Woooohoooo........

rhetorician · 10/10/2011 13:14

hatwoman I am also a snotter - it's delightful :)

we are doing very well with the running dreams, aren't we? yours is a classic

paws great race report, I think it's amazing that you kept going!

futurity · 10/10/2011 13:14

paws that report is fab apart from the comment about mumsnet wooden spoon...NO-ONE on this thread deserves that...we are all amazing Smile (chucks wooden spoon out of the window)

FairyBasslet · 10/10/2011 13:15

Sorry guys - not posting very much here as I can pretty much keep up reading the thread but then don't have enough time to post (note to self - stop writing essays for each post Grin). Loving the mantra "Let's fucking do this" - I think that will become my new personal philosophy on life!

Well done to all racers this weekend. I love reading all the race reports, can't get enough of them. Paws - so glad you found your rings. I have got in the habit of always taking my wedding ring off before a run, just in case. Great race though - can't believe you kept going with your calf and all.

I did my first Parkrun at the weekend and loved it. I can see a full-blown addiction starting up here and will certainly make a habit of going whenever possible. There's a pretty good hill in our Parkrun which is great - I like a good hill to get my teeth into!

I've decided to set myself some goals to work on in the next few months so here we (publicly) go:

sub 30min 5K
sub 60 min 10K
sub 2:30 HM (to be honest I should have run the Coventry one in about 2:30 but for the 25 degree heat and my fairly piss-poor preparation)

So, easy stuff for most of you here, but they're extremely challenging goals for me, so bring it on, and let's fucking do this!

I should have gone out this morning but have faffed and faffed doing some work etc. Might still try to drag myself out for a quickie once lunch settles. It's a lovely blustery but dry day here so I know it'll blow the cobwebs away. Also stood on the scales this morning and got the shock of my life, so something drastic must be done.

Strangeways - are you by any chance thinking of the Welcombe Wobbler next weekend? (It was you who mentioned the Shakespeare Marathon wasn't it, so I assume you're in the Stratford area?) I would have been tempted as well, but DH is away next weekend. Plenty races around though. For me it's just planning it around my DH's schedule and also carefully selecting races where I won't be last by a huge distance Grin

FairyBasslet · 10/10/2011 13:20

muffinchops - hear hear!!

RunningAllDay · 10/10/2011 13:24

Wow Paws I think you're amazing. Hope the calf is OK soon; huge well done for carrying on. And you ran into ANOTHER COUNTRY! Just wow.

StrangewaysHereICome · 10/10/2011 13:25

Hi fairy yes I was thinking of the Welcombe Wobbler. I did it three years ago and my word it was hard!! But I have come to the conclusion I like pain Hmm. I might do it, I'll see how the weekend pans out. I'm definitely going to do the Croome canter on the 27th November.

I'm still undecided about the Shakespeare marathon, might do the half instead. Do you know if it gets full early? I was hoping to leave it til Christmas before making up my mind. What other races have you got planned? We are in Worcestershire, but DH works in Stratford.

StrangewaysHereICome · 10/10/2011 13:27

Forgot to add fabulous park run, which one was it?

ibbydibby · 10/10/2011 13:31

Brilliant report paws so glad you found the rings. Again, brilliant that you finished, with a gammy leg. Hope you are pampering yourself today. And getting your calf seen to by GP/physio?

Pawsnclaws · 10/10/2011 13:31

Strangeways DO IT DO IT DO IT!! Look into my eyes, you know you want to do it Smile.

muffin - definitely addictive .... I'm already looking for my next event (NOT a marathon though, I think two six months apart was too much for me and only for superbeings like Moshi!)

OP posts:
Pawsnclaws · 10/10/2011 13:41

fairy I love parkrun, well only done it once with a throbbing hangover but I've resolved to do it more often. We're in a bit of a parkrun black hole though so it's a bit of a trip.

ibby apart from the calf I feel a lot better all over than I did the first marathon, and I'm convinced the difference was the massage I had this time. It really loosened everything up and I'm moving pretty freely. The physio I saw said my calves are horrendously knotted and tight and he thought I'd torn the muscle so I think I need to see someone at home now about it. Sigh.

hatwoman I'm a snotter, but I recently discovered Sudafed nasal spray when I had that sinus problem a couple of weeks back. You can't use it continuously but if you use it just before a run - no more snotty sleeves!

OP posts:
FairyBasslet · 10/10/2011 13:52

Strangeways - it was Leamington Parkrun.

The only thing I have signed up for just now is the Shakespeare Half. I thought about doing it this year but didn't in the end (just as well as I had done no training whatsoever). It was certainly full this year but I don't know when it filled up, maybe about a month before, I think. I do have a shopping list of races I'd like to do though depending on DH etc, main ones as follows...

Stratford Raceway HM/10k/5k - 19th November (don't think I can do that as DH likely to be golfing for a friend's birthday do - bah!)
Regency 10k - March 2012 ( im patiently waiting for it to open)
Two Castles 10k - June 2012 (did this a couple of years ago - my first 10k, couldn't do it this year as, you guessed it, DH was away! Fills up really fast though as v popular race)
I always do a Race for Life - did Stoneleigh 10k this year.

There's loads of other 10k races around the Stratford/Warwick areas. I often find myself gazing over the Runner's World events section as 'normal' people would look through a clothing catalogue.
Thinking further ahead, I want to do the Coventry Half again next year, and maybe the Birmingham one too. Can't do this year's as we're up to Scotland for half term (but I've spotted a 5k in Edinburgh that I might be able to do while we're up!).

My name is FairyBasslet and I'm in danger of becoming a raceaholic Grin

Wheelybug · 10/10/2011 14:39

Paws - Fab report, how dramatic ! And how nice that, even at a hardcore type marathon people stopped to help you. Glad you got your rings back and I hope the calf is ok. No wooden spoon for you - two marathons in 6 months, you are a legend !!

futurity - am pleased you're feeling better. A friend of mine that suffers from runners tummy was recommended to drink sports drinks as dehydration was a factor. She also stayed off wheat/alcohol/dairy as Paws recommends.

encyclo - glad things are on a good run with your dd. Long may it continue for you.

rhet - well done for packing so much in to your morning. I had similar although don't have to add work into the mix. This morning I said to DH - maybe I should just give up running.... I wonder if I could ? Better not give it a try just in case !!

Some great running here from everyone else - distance/speed/hills/just getting on with it. We're all great - so there.

I did 10K this morning and braved 2 hills which I have been avoiding since doing my ankle in, which was a convenient excuse. Were fine - must do more....

Wheelybug · 10/10/2011 14:41

Oh yes. I am hoping to update my running tracks on my ipod before the GSR - Any recommendations for inspirational tunes ? Don't have to classy or even that upbeat, just inspirational !!! I keep hearing songs and thinking they'd be good but forgeting what they are. I Have just written a list which includes 'Elvis song' which I heard on the radio the other day but I can't now remember which one..... and he did a few.

rhetorician · 10/10/2011 14:49

white stripes? (go faster songs?)

peachsmuggler · 10/10/2011 15:21

Oh wheely, do you know what Elvis song I like to run to? It's the one that was out a few years ago as a remx, goes "A little less conversation, a little more action", but be warned, some bits make you want to sprint and jump!!! Very good for fartlek.

paws, love the race report and am so happy you got your rings. You see, despite the calf issues, you now have a marathon body, hence feeling better after this one!
