sfxmum thanks - we are assuming express delivery this time - DD was about 4 hours start to finish Shock

DS2 ok, thanks, though somewhat shaken yesterday evening. Sfxmum, not a hammer but 2 hammers...no chance to speak to parents as I don't know where he lives - he told me which road then promptly dissolved into tears. He was obviously very frightened that a strange adult (me) had approached him to tell him off, and I do feel bad about that, as I hate the thought of children being scared. What also concerned me was that after I spoke to him initially, he ran across the road without looking - I have spent much of this morning reliving that scene and thinking "what if...." I did tell another adult nearby what had happened and why he was crying...it is a strange situation as we live opposite a much loved oak tree which many children climb..beyond that is a field, and to the left there is a housing estate. Many children on the estate go "out to play" and nip across the field to the tree. I feel very uncomfortable that they come over here unsupervised - even more after last night's episode. Two of the other children had the hammers because they were "rebuilding" part of the treehouse. These 2 children are 8 and 11, and had the hammers with parental permission. The parent I spoke to was one of those who had given a hammer, saying her son was sensible...obviously not sensible enough to keep the hammer to himself though. Not quite sure how we stand now, though if happens again I wll probably call village PCSO (if I can't find out who the parents are)

Rhet what is the prob re leave - is it length of employment/type of contract?

N4NNY still v envious of parkrun trip to Iceland. I get parkrun newsletter also, and wondered why I had not seen this, though tracked it down last night in my deleted folder last night and realised I had not bothered to read it because it was one that had arrived while I was on holiday.

Sticky think some running club mates get running stuff from Lidl, socks specifically, not sure about other things. I manage to get away with cheap shorts from JJB sports type shops - children's ones aged 13/14...they a teeny bit tighter than I would like, but they are ok...they are what I call "flappy" ones, ie not cycling short style. Also have Ronhill cycling short type running shorts, as well as Ronhill capris and runnng tights - although expensive I have found that Ronhill stuff lasts well, keeps its shape and most importantly does not fall down! Are you near a John Lewis? Ours often has a few reduced items of sports wear. There are often good mail order deals with sweat shop.

Was on a bit of a high last night after running club, buzzing so much that could not sleep. Hence v tired this morning!

Wheelybug · 09/09/2011 13:10

Hi All

Have you seen this www.bupa.co.uk/smartrunner-app?cmpid=run0072. Looks good - although I am an android owner...grrr....

Cheap running clothes - I use Lidl quite a lot but mainly for bottoms - I have long and shorter capris and some cycling capris and really like them. And socks. Have bought a couple of tops but not so good. For tops I use a combo of Sweatshop/Wiggle/Amazon, they usually have something going cheap.

The cake race is a FB thing - peach showed a picture of a cake she'd made which shared a name with me and I think squix. We were arguing about who was going to eat it. Which is a bit daft really, given peach and her family probably scoffed it.

Hopefully off to gym later, once my paretns arrive and I've gone to DD1's 'meet and greet' at school then wizzed her over to a ballet shop to get her new stuff (anyone else with dcs who do ballet - its an expensive game for a bit of prancing around Wink).

sfxmum · 09/09/2011 13:24

oh yes I saw the sponge, gave me an urge to bakeGrin

rhet have you watched the videos on how to deliver your own baby?

ibby makes you glad guns aren't freely available, I think children should be trusted to handle 'dangerous' tools but under supervision and then when they have some emotional maturity, many accidents happen because they just don't understand permanence. and I can see how you feel about the boy just bolting with no concern/awareness for his safety

rhetorician · 09/09/2011 13:33

ibby it is because I iz gay, innit? I am not the biological parent, and law here does not grant me a legal relationship to my children, therefore I am not entitled to anything...

sfxmum - not yet, but I think I might need to look at those, just in case, although we do live about 5 mins drive from the hospital and have neighbours who would watch dd until DP's mum/sister got here.

Went to see a newborn yesterday - not sure that DD was altogether impressed...

Did 5 easy miles in my new shoes (which now have proper mud on them, yay!); it is very warm today, but were it not for time pressure I would liked to have kept going really

OP posts:
futurity · 09/09/2011 13:51

Had running club last night and did 4.5 quickly so thought I would do an easy 4 today...man it was hard! Maybe because warmer than expected..I had to stop twice and ended up doing 3.5. Am normally ok running the day after running club but it wasn't happening today. Just chalk it down to "one of those days"!

All this talk of baking has made me make some flapjacks...yummy!

muffinchops · 09/09/2011 13:57

Anyone doing Herts 10k in October? Need some encouragement. Did a 10 k years ago in Fountains Abbey Yorkshire after some v random training. Several children down the line have taken up running again this year. Followed C25k and entered a Race for Life in the summer and am now on wk 5 of the Ease into 10k app.

DH is going to run it with me for support but am now starting to feel nervous and will be so mad at myself if I wimp out. I hear there is a big hill to tackle. Has anyone done it and is it full of complete running ninjas? Can I do it??!?

muffinchops · 09/09/2011 13:58

Ooops. So sorry guys - I meant to start a new thread. Apologies. I was just marvelling at your thread full of admiration for you all and accidentally posted mine!

sfxmum · 09/09/2011 14:17

Muffinchops stay and join in Smile I am sure you can do it

ibbydibby · 09/09/2011 14:19

Rhet apologies for appearing naive when I asked about leave (lack of) - I struggle to remember who lives where, and had forgotten that you are in Ireland... Blush. I am also employed by university (though as distance learning tutor) and looked through their info on parental/maternity leave, and could not understand why you wouldn't get it - unless you had been emplyed for less than a year.

muffinchops sounds like you could do it, as you have already had experience of the distance previously, and you have a few weeks to go....sounds like you want to!

rhetorician · 09/09/2011 14:22

ibby it's hard to keep track, isn't it? It's mostly ok, but when I am the last woman standing it's a bit hard to take. If they ever let me adopt them though then I'll get maternity leave...but that's a bit if

I've done a fair bit of distance learning stuff in my time, as tutor, and creating materials. I liked it, and really believed in the mission, as it were

OP posts:

BIG if...

OP posts:
cestlavie · 09/09/2011 17:39

Just popping by - work been absolutely ridiculous later so barely had any time for running or running related chat sadly.

Good luck to those doing the Bristol half marathon this weekend. Am doing same in Nottingham albeit on some way less training than I'd like!

Happy weekend and running all! Grin

DrNortherner · 09/09/2011 19:35

God I have some catching up to do here!

Bought a support thing for my leg niggle today, giving it a whirl tomorrow. Doing 10 miles with SIL who is doing GNR next weekend.

Re kit I tend to buy a lot on line, and from Sports direct who often have some grreat running bargains. What do you think of the Asics Ayami range? I'm not sure about it.......

DrNortherner · 09/09/2011 19:36
sfxmum · 09/09/2011 20:36

regarding running gear my holy grail is a nice loose v neck t-shirt not pink
got one at Uniqlo ages ago but it is soon to be consigned to the bin, got a nice loose vest in Sweaty Betty as well, it is difficult to find flattering gear for people with boobs

and again stop putting pink in women gear

rhetorician · 09/09/2011 20:37

I had a look at the Ayami stuff, Dr No, didn't like it, but then I am of the old faded T-shirt and muddy trainers school - and kind of like running precisely because I do not feel oppressed by my profound sartorial failures...

OTOH, I think a lot of women are put off exercise by the manky gear, so I feel divided - great if it gets women to run, but don't want to feel that I have wear such stuff myself.

Not sure it looks that comfy, either

OP posts:
rhetorician · 09/09/2011 20:43

oh yeah to the pink nonsense sfxmum (do you and me agree on everything?? :o)

I have a couple of nice adidas v-necks, not pink (one white with lavender stripes, one black with red), but they need a good bio wash (DD to me after running: 'you need a shower mummy, you're STINKY')

I do like my clingy puma and nike shorts; wear Ronhill tights in winter and long-sleeved tops (have a Helly Hansen, but it's actually a bit tight round the armpits), sometimes a very thin Patagonia top or ski top. Last year in the snow though (when it was -14) I wore 4 layers on top, 2 below...nutter, oh yeah

OP posts:
Wheelybug · 09/09/2011 20:52

Good luck this weekend Orangehead, thetasigmamum, N4nny, cest and Moshi. Looking forward to hearing the reports !

20 mins on the treadmill today amongst other gym stuff - just over a couple of miles - felt ok, a slight twinge and stiff but a bit of swelling now so icing and hoping !!! Felt good to be running again though Smile

orangehead · 09/09/2011 21:37

sticky Aldi do cheap running stuff, got my running tights from there and they seem good.
Thanks Wheely.
Im feeling very stressed today, horrid day at work plus alot of family problems and I think everything has just come to a head today and I feel like I need a punch bag. So I have totally pigged out, so much so that I can probably be rolled round the race tomorrow

June2009 · 09/09/2011 21:42

oh no sfx and rhet I love my pink t-shirt :D Will you forgive me? I swear this is the only pink item in my entire wardrobe!

sticky Got some stuff from sweaty betty last year and it is great, bit pricey but it still looks new after several washes a week (on 30 degrees and no tumble drying).
Also go to sports direct (online too) as they really do have bargains sometimes.

I do love my timetable at the moment, dropping dd off to nursery 3 mornings a week at 7:30, then an hour at the gym then work, pick dd up at 1pm, packed but lovely!
dh usually takes dd and meets up with another dad on saturday mornings so I get that time to myself too.
Evening classes are often 30 or 45 minutes, means I'm usually back in time to settle dd to bed.

I'm Envy at the animals some of you encounter on your runs :D I see a lot of dogs & pigeons in the parks, maybe a fox if I'm lucky!

muffin I think actually you are on the right thread :) I signed up to my first event after finding this thread by chance. You should go for it, events are fun, what's the worst that can happen?
If you are a member of a gym maybe do some hill running on a treadmill, (start small and build from it?) If not then look for a real hill somewhere :D

rhetorician · 09/09/2011 21:44

orangehead - that sounds crappy - hope things improve soon :(

OP posts:
orangehead · 09/09/2011 21:50

Thanks rhet hopefully tomorrow will destress me, run it all out Smile

June2009 · 09/09/2011 21:55

orange xpost, sorry to hear about your crappy day, a good old run is probably just what you need to clear your head. take care xx

DrNortherner · 09/09/2011 21:57

Oh God, I have rather alot of pink running stuff (black ASICS tights with a pink flash, nike pink long sleeved top, reebok pink vest, karrimor pink tops (short and long sleeved) Nike pink running jacket and loads of pink running socks. However, it's not all pink. I also have turquoise, lilac and coral.
