Oh yes N4nny, it's different on the day. Forget about how long it took today, just marvel in the fact that you have managed to run 13 miles - a HUGE achievement in anyone's eyes.

bonkers20 · 28/08/2011 21:46

as the baboons were on an intimidate-the-tourists-at-the-picnic- spot kind of a mood Oh I hate picnics like that! ;-)

N4NNY · 28/08/2011 22:14

I think what is Upseting me the most is though I'd set myself the 2.45 target I was secretly hoping for closer to 2.30 BUT I did it I finished the whole distance and the next long run will be so different I felt very lonely today so running with thousands of other runners and the crowd WILL get me through hopefully in a better time and if not well it doesn't matter at least I will have finished. Thanks for all your support xx

encyclogirl · 28/08/2011 22:25

Congrats to all the long distance runners this weekend. I am so happy to say that I can actually join you all. I ran 10 miles on Saturday morning in 1.56. I was so happy with that. Actually my dh, kind of doesn't believe I did it, so I'm off not to upload my run on Garmin to prove I did it.

I think I'm starting to figure out that I'm built for distance not speed, I could've kept going I think. Once I stopped I really started to hurt though.

My upper thigh/groin was really hurting, but I'm fine today.

Doing 5 tomorrow I think.

I am properly hooked now.

Rhet I can't believe you managed to run after Sunday lunch and wine! You are NAILS!

rhetorician · 28/08/2011 22:29

encyclo was wondering how you got on, so delighted to hear you did your 10 miler with no problem. You'll get faster, I'm sure, too if your endurance is good.

Well I feel committed to my running streak, which is kind of silly, but I've lost about 3lbs and run 105 miles in 20 days. It's kind of cool. Wondering if I will be able to keep it up once school/uni starts...really want to try.

squix · 28/08/2011 23:19

n4nny - for me the thing about doing the 13 miles in training for the half was more about confidence - proving that I would finish the race - one less thing to worry about. I found it really provided me with a solid foundation for the race itself.

rhet - you seem to be on a roll at the moment - long may it continue

DrNorthener - good luck

8 miles for me this morning - just about getting back into my stride after a couple of weeks off but back to busy work schedule and I am not sure that 6am runs are going to be as easy now that the weather is returning to it's normal cold and dampness - DH has just asked if I want the heating on tomorrow morning Sad definitely the end of the summer.

MoshiMoshi · 28/08/2011 23:41

Best of luck DrNo! Hope the shin holds out.

SonicMiddleAge · 29/08/2011 08:18

So, despite a rather unfortunate run in (dd ill, then catching her virus, then travelling overseas) resulting in only managing 4 runs in the last three weeks, I managed to complete my city to surf (12km) in 64:24, which at least met my fall back of under 65min. It?s pretty much the end of fun run season here though as it?s starting to get warm, so I need to find some way of keeping motivation up ? I?d like to start training for a half marathon, but there?s one on 24 sept which I think would be a stretch, and then not until March... .

rhetorician · 29/08/2011 09:37

well done sonic - great time, even without the preparation you would ideally have done! stamps feet and demands full race report...

it might be getting warm there, but it is distinctly cool here - talk of vests for DD and time to finally get my finger out and ring the builder to add a section to the flue pipe

off to work for most of today, but hope to get a few kms running in later on in addition to the bike

can't wait to hear how Dr No got on

SonicMiddleAge · 29/08/2011 10:10

Thank Rhet. Race was pretty good ? a lovely day for it ? about 20degrees by the end but nice cool breeze. The start went straight up kings hill, which is quite a steep one ? which made me feel pretty good as I usually have to take this hill right at the end of my Sunday run, i,e. after I?ve done 9km and it nearly kills me, but coming at it with fresh legs I felt like I bolted up it which put me in good frame of mind, then the 3,6,9km flags seemed to come earlier than I was expecting them each time so tried to really add some pace for the final three. Only real disappointment I had was everyone talks about the ?last killer hill? so I held back a bit for that, and in the event didn?t struggle with it at all, so felt I could have pushed a bit more at the finish. Your running streak has be in awe by the way - I think my body would have given up in a complaining heap of aches and pains by now...

rhetorician · 29/08/2011 10:23

well 'streak' is a description of the daily effort, not the speed at which I do it!

OP posts:
DrNortherner · 29/08/2011 10:29

N4NNY don't be dissapointed with your time! You ran 13.1 miles! And, on race day you will run faster. You will smash 2.45 I bet.

ibbydibby Which village where you staying in? The area round the is just stunning. Yorkshire countryside really is the best imo! I just love Middleham.

Wheely sorry about your ankle. The injury bench is filling up again. I wouldn't atempt to run on it for at least a week. RICE in between. Poor you.

encyclo well done on getting to 10 miles! You deffo have the bug now Smile

My 10k has a 1.30pm start, hence the lazy morning pottering around. My shin feels slightly sore, but not run for 5 days so a bit nervous has to how it will respond. Dh has a cold and is pretending he is dying so announced he will run it but will take it easy, but I however have a mission to beat my mate. Last 10k we did she beat me my about 40 seconds......

Will report back later guys.

encyclogirl · 29/08/2011 10:47

Best of luck Dr No

Sonic great race report. It's really interesting how we all have such different conditions to run in. Here I am trying to figure out a plan for Winter running and you have the opposite problem!

MoshiMoshi · 29/08/2011 11:02

Well done sonic! It sounds like you do need a new focus to hang into that enthusiasm.

14.57M av 7:42m/m this morning which had MP and HMP sections in it. I find precise pacing quite hard so had to really concentrate. It occurred to me that perceived effort can really vary at a given pace depending on the conditions eg terrain, people to dodge, bridges/roads to cross, and came to the conclusion that one can focus too much on exact numbers at the expense of the race itself.

Enjoy the bank holiday weekend!

ibbydibby · 29/08/2011 12:01

Moshi am impressed by your pace! Not quite sure about MP and HMP (though have been on hols and though have read much of this thread am unable to figure these out)

Sonic can you try enter some shorter races to build up for half marathon in March? To keep you motivated? Or join a running club if not already in one? I like it in races when I find something easier than anticipated (re your killer hill), not so nice when bits are harder! I am much happier running a race when I am familiar with the route, though this is not always possible. There is a 10k race near here, with a bit of a killer hill - you think you can see the top but newcomers don't realise that you get to that bit and then turn sharp left - and carry on going up hill for a bit longer. There is a lovely slow downhill bit after that though. You have to do that whole section twice though, and I guess that after the first lap you are (more) mentally prepared for the 2nd time around.

DrNo we were in Bellerby. Loved it, just wish we were back there now. So hard to believe we were there just 3 days ago though, as landscape so different to here in East Anglia. Good luck with race this afternoon.

fannybanjo · 29/08/2011 12:28

Moshi your pace for long distance is unbelievable!!! Out of interest what are your PB for Marathon and Half?

stickylittlefingers · 29/08/2011 13:22

Hope the run goes well DrNo. Looks like the weather will be kinder to you today, so hope your shins hold up!

sorry, totally un-running-related - but DrNo, re Forbidden corner - what's the story with having to get registered in advance? My parents live very near, but we've never been. One of their friends took their granddaughter, and said that it was "too scary" for the 7yo. It's also reasonably pricey... So I've been a little sceptical - but seems I was wrong...?

encyclogirl well done on your 10 miles! You sound like these runs might just get longer and longer!!

N4nny - a huge percentage of the population just couldn't contemplate running a half marathon. You're already putting yourself into a more athletic minority getting it done. The speed is just to be worked on (or even not, necessarily, the main thing is just getting out there. I think it's just interesting to see what you can get yourself to do!)

Fanny (if you're even bothered to keep reading this far in!!) - I wanted to say to you to make sure you had hills in your training. I've no idea what the landscape is like round Chester Blush, but a lot of people seem quite surprised by the GNR - it's not hilly, exactly, but there are some uphill pulls. The one that gets me is after mile 11, just coming in to S.Shields. Even though I know I'm nearly at the end, until I see the sea I always feel totally shite!!

stickylittlefingers · 29/08/2011 13:23

(obv having read Fanny's post running up * on the hill you are doing exactly that!!)

fannybanjo · 29/08/2011 14:18

sticky thank you for that tip! The area of Chester I live in is the outskirts and it can be very hilly in places (3 of the Villages near me are set on hills) so most runs I do have a hill in them. Looking on my Runmeter for yesterday's run - my ascent was 1390 feet - descent was 697 - I'm pretty sure hardcore hill runners would laugh at a 1400ft climb is but it's bloody hard to me!

Just on way with fambo to Chester Town Centre to take girls to Build a Bear.... Grin my Gran gave me some money for them yesterday so treating them. However would have been better spent on clothes but that's boring!

encyclogirl · 29/08/2011 15:06

Enjoy Build a Bear Fanny

Moshi you are so impressive! I feel very fortunate to be on this thread with so many accomplised runners. I am learning loads here.

Sticky thank you. I do feel I have a few more miles in me.

A question for you all now. How far do you run 2 days after your LSR? I'm thinking I might try 6 tonight. That seems to be my average weekday run now. Is that too many miles? Should I be running less/more?

I guess it's very individual, but I'm thinking 2 6-8 miles a week a 3 mile and then a LSR will be my pattern.

Can anyone share their average running plan? What do you rack up in a week?

Questions, questions!

encyclogirl · 29/08/2011 15:10

Oh and ps: Hooked doesn't even begin to describe it!

Wheelybug · 29/08/2011 16:12

Well done sonic - sounds like a good race !

Hope today has gone well DrNo.

Great run moshi - awesome as ever !! Thanks for the info re cycling. My bro reckoned I had to cycle for 3x the time I'd run for to get the same effect which seemed a bit excessive (and impossible timewise without giving up all family life !!).

encyclo - I think we're around the same place distance/training wise. I too did my first 10 mile run just before I went on hols. At teh moment I do a 5 mile run (tempo), 6 mile (speed intervals) and a LSR plus a 3 miler when time allows. My plan once I have dd2 in pre-school in a couple of weeks (and now once I am recovered) was to do LSR, a couple of 6-7 mile runs and then a 3 miler so your plan seems right to me.

rhet - I keep meaning to ask, what is your 'streak' - running every day??? Shock. Well done !

Thanks for sympathy everyone. Am very frustrated but trying to keep perspective on it. I don't think I'm even up to cycling at the moment - as fanny said I think it would still require a bit too much effort on the ankle especially as I'm not really a cyclist. Struggling with the RICE too - especially the R ! 2 hours shopping round town today, thinking it was ok and then ended up in boots buying a support but suspect I should be using that anyway.

Going to swim tomorrow and then can't do anything time wise until the weekend so will swim or cycle then depending on how it feels. Next week is a struggle timewise with exercise anyway but might be able to get dd2 into the creche at the gym so fingers crossed by then I might be able to try a treadmill run which I guess will be easier on the ankle. And if not use other gym stuff.

Wheelybug · 29/08/2011 16:14

oh and encyclo in terms of when I am going to do each run (if this helps) - I will only be able to run Monday, Weds, Thurs and weekend (will aim for saturday). I want to do my long run in the week so it doens't impinge too much on the weekend so

Mon - LSR
Weds - 6-7 m intervals (in gym probably)
Thurs - 3 mile
Saturday - 6-7m (tempo)

DrNortherner · 29/08/2011 16:32

Afternoon all! I did it and the shin held out (deep heat is my new best friend) although it feels very stiff/sore now......anyway, awaiting official time but my Garmin said 55.35 but it also said the distance was 6.32 miles. I had forgotten just how hard and lumpy the course was. It was really enjoyable but totally off road, field full of long grass, pot holes and cow pat, so not the fastest course, but I still set myself a PB. I did it last year in 1 hour 10 mins so have shaved 15 mins off my time in 12 months. Pleased with that.

So, as I am doing the Leeds Abbey dash in Nov, which is a fast, flat road race what should be my goal?

Also, I would like to do a 50 minute 10k in 2012, is this achievable do you think?

stickyfingers re Forbidden Corner, I have heard you have to book in advance due to some National TRust arguement, but due to the nature of the attraction they do need to keep a track of how many are in at any one time as over crowding could be an issue. It's not cheap, £10 per adult and £8 for kids, but I would say it's worth a visit as I simply have never visited anything quite like it before. I would say the guy who owns it/built it is somewhat of a weirdo Grin There are statues of naked ladies, naked men, and a naked baby that appears to have a 10 inch golden penis that shoots water at you. I was a bit freaked out in the dark tunnels/staircases where you can barely see the hand infront of you, and they pipe a man whispering in Latin all the way round....

Wheelybug · 29/08/2011 16:51

Well done DrNo - great time especially in such conditions. And what an improvement in a year - wow !! You have worked so hard. You must be chuffed. Did you beat your friend ??

I would think a 50 min 10K is well achievable (maybe even in Nov if its flat and on the road).
