Yes I beat my mate, she did 57 mins. She hates this race and says she will never do it again!

Also, my ds won the childrens race for his age group. He won it last year too. Future speedy runner there I think!

bonkers20 · 29/08/2011 18:27

Does anyone else NOT take any sort of clock/watch out running with them?

I prefer to run without, though I am VERY interested in seeing my time at the end.

bonkers20 · 29/08/2011 18:27

Well done Dr!

bonkers20 · 29/08/2011 18:29

Yuk to 1.30pm start though. I'd be dead from adrenalin by then!

stickylittlefingers · 29/08/2011 19:06

thanks DrNo (for the info) and well done indeed on the race! I think, shins permitting, you should be able to get a good new PB on the Leeds Abbey dash. My brother did it last year (I think is doing it again this) and said it's fast. How exciting! :) And well done your DS too!

Themasterandmargaritas · 29/08/2011 19:14

Well done DrNo, you are also on fire this year. Smile Well done DS too. Mine is quite taken with the running too and went on a training morning running up and down hills in our arboretum with boys more than a year older than him.

Encyclo, I am doing 1 x tempo run (currently 8k, but will boost it up a km per week if I can find the time) 1 x interval session and 1 LSR a week. If I can find a spare day I shall do another shorter tempo run.

rhetorician · 29/08/2011 20:27

DrNo congratulations - great time, esp in such conditions and with dodgy leg...you do realise there will come a point where youngster No will start beating you? well done him, too

I think you can do a sub 50, as long as you can sort out the shin. I'm going to do a 10k in mid Oct - I know I keep faffing about with the list, but things keep changing - sorry!

Encyclo rest days are important, especially when you are building mileage; I have 2 default run lengths - about 5-6 miles and about 3 miles. But I am the Freak on the Streak (yes, it does mean running every day), so tend to do the shorter runs as easy recovery runs. I am already faster - and have run everyday for 3 weeks! I'm actually less stiff and creaky, mainly because most of it is easy running.

DD being very trying at the moment - everything takes an age, is accompanied by 'I don't want to', 'I want to do it myself' + big tantrum when she discovers that a 2.7 year old can't actually drive a car/put cream on her bum/wash her hair...she is as sweet as can be in many ways, but DP and I are suddenly feeling very Hmm about no. 2. To whom DD said 'hello, sister' today. But it's too late now...

Hi back from my weekend away. I have had a quick skim of what I have missed but will try and catch up when have a bit more time.
Well done drNo, fantastic on getting your time down by 15 mins, wow. Well done to your son too, you must be so proud.
Ah rhet these phrases do pass, even though at the time they feel like they are going on forever. She seems very sweet though. Just remember deep breaths and Wine at trying moments

rhetorician · 29/08/2011 21:32

thanks orange, perhaps part of the problem was too much WineWineWineWine yesterday (it doesn't do much for the patience, I find...)

OP posts:
DrNortherner · 29/08/2011 21:34

rhet dd is bout 2.5 isn't she? Quite a trying age IIRC. Though not as trying a 3 and 4 imo........sorry! Each age brings its own delights and problems, but, my ds is 9 now and it has flown. They really do grow up too quick.

Am pondering my running and am thinking I may not bother with another half this year, but instead concentrate on 10ks. I really enjoy the distance. There is a 10 mile race near m in Nov and I am considering it, it's not a distance I've racd before.

rhetorician · 29/08/2011 21:40

yup, she is...and she's lovely, but my god, I wish she'd just put her bloody clothes on! (when I get cross with something DD says 'that bloody bike/tyre' etc Blush)

I think there's a point at which runners start to settle on 'their' distance - I did a 10 miler a couple of weeks ago and liked it - long enough for a challenge, but not so long that it takes all bloomin' morning. I am going to do another half, but the other timed runs are 15k and 10k. Where were you placed in the F35 group (ahem!), or haven't you found out yet?

Next year i was planning on a 10k (April) and then the race series I've just done (5m July, 10m August, half in Sept). NO marathon malarky for me, no thanks (my colleague did one in May and it took so much out of her that she's barely run since - I know several people like that)

OP posts:
orangehead · 29/08/2011 21:44

Now I only suggested one rhet Smile

rhetorician · 29/08/2011 21:46

oh, that's where I'm going wrong...

OP posts:
futurity · 29/08/2011 21:52

DrNo what a great time! Well done! I'd love to do that sort time for a 10k but I can't see it happening quite yet. I keep playing with Mcmillian calculator and entering in times to see how fast I would have to run each mile to get to my goal...which at the very least is 10k in 59 mins 59seconds!

As for deciding on my preferred distance...not sure..kind of like 1/2 distance but it does take (me) along time to do and train for. Keeping entering the ballot for London marathon but am not super keen to do a marathon if I am honest...well it's mad isn't it!

sfxmum · 29/08/2011 21:58

hello all

DrN fantastic time, and congrats to DS the speedy monkey

shall have to look back over the thread and catch up

lovely holiday but no running although plenty of walking and far too much food and alcohol, great time was had by all

looking terrified as out of shape-- forward to training up to 10k and catching up with your good selves for inspiration

Happy running as we get in to Autumn my favourite seasonSmile

Pinkglow · 29/08/2011 22:20

oh that forbidden corner place sounds interesting, if I'm ever back up that way I'll check it out I think.

DrNo - brilliant time and congrats to your DS

I was feeling quite despondent this week. I did three runs, the first was really hard but I managed to MAKE myself complete it. The second was again very hard going and I had to give up after 4k. Today I did 4k and I did it but again found it very hard going. But then I realised that all this week its been my TOTM and as its been a nasty one I've eaten my fair share of junk food.

I'm having a rest for a couple of days in which time I'll eat more healthy and then hopefully not be on my TOTM when I run again.

bonkers20 · 29/08/2011 22:21

dr Don't say that about 3 and 4 year olds! Noooooo. I also have a 2.5 year old and he's testing every ounce of patience I have (granted, that is only about 3 ounces). My older DS (now 12) was indeed much more of a pain in the arse challenging at 3 and 4 and I've been telling myself that because DS2 is having all the tatrums at 2 he's going to be calm and serene at 3 and 4. Time will tell!

TheChewyToffeeMum · 30/08/2011 08:07

Been away from the thread for a few days and looks like it will take me an age to catch up...

In the meantime a question for all you triathletes. What cadence do you aim for on your bike? I am using my DHs neglected exercise bike at the moment while I build up my mileage (very) slowly with the barefoot-style running. Should I be aiming for the same sort of leg turn over as when I am running (85-90 rpm)?

fannybanjo · 30/08/2011 09:29

Morning ladies!

rhet your DD will grow out of it plus she'll be testing boundaries what with DP being pregnant and not able to do what she can
physically usually do. However some children are more strong willed than others - mine are all like chalk and cheese. Yep wine also makes my patience wear thin very fast! Can't believe your still managing to run every day - I salute you!

sfx welcome back - glad you had a lovely holiday and thats what holidays are for, to rest, drink and be merry! You can easily get back into the running.

pinkglow how long have you been training? If you are struggling hugely with non-stop running, go back to run, walk, run, walk. We all have weeks (especially TOTM) where we struggle so don't get too despondent. Our bodies have ways of telling us what we should be doing although our heads are telling us a different thing. Smile

DrNo well done - great timeouts you bear your friend Grin. How did your DH do?

Recovery run yesterday was awful, had wine on Sunday, was tired and hungry so when I was out it was real struggle to keep going so walked back last mile. I don't find recovery runs help my training at all - they wear me out. Do I HAVE to do them!?

Booked Motorhome for the weekend of GNR - kids excited. Anyone any recommendations of decent campsites in Newcastle? sticky....?!!

fannybanjo · 30/08/2011 09:30

Should read DrNo great time AND you beat your friend! Damn the iPhone Blush

stickylittlefingers · 30/08/2011 10:08

fanny I'll do your recovery runs for you, I love 'em! Went out for an hour this morning and managed to cover a whole 9k... and yes, I was shuffling running all the way! I was thinking it's a shame there isn't a "slow run" race like we used to have a "slow bike" race at primary sports day. I would excel at it!! :)

rhet - our DD1 was a bloody nightmare in the last stages of the pregnancy with DD2. I remember one night when I'd picked her up from nursery and she'd had a huge tantrum because she didn't want to leave, then refused to walk so we went on the bus, whereupon she started to disrobe, including kicking one of her wellies to the other side of the bus. Had to pretty much carry her back into the house, sat down on the stairs and burst into tears. At that point she's all "oh, what's the matter Mummy?" and hugging me. Much to my Blush I remember shouting "what do you think the bloody matter is?", and we both had a hug and a cry. Then we felt much better, kept calm and carried on... :) A low point. Having said that, she was lovely with DD2 once she was born.

Oh yes, fanny, I'll have a think about where to put motorhomes round here. Obv I've never felt the need myself!!

fannybanjo · 30/08/2011 10:21

raises sticky recovery runs...... Grin by the way how's your training going - what's longest you've ran in GNR training? I'm planning on 14 miler this weekend then that'll be last LSR - knock it down to 8 miles (but hilly) the weekend before GNR.

I think my problem is that I'm too ravenous after LSR on the Sunday and although I set loads on Sunday I don't think it was enough.

rhetorician · 30/08/2011 10:25

it is hard not to lose it with them sometimes, isn't it? I keep trying to remember that she is often enraged because the universe is so random and inexplicable to her (? um, to me as well, actually), and that if I didn't have to parent her it would be funny ('put me down! put me down!'). She's actually pretty good as these things go - she's just a toddler.

Am doing all sorts of necessary little jobs today - teaching schedules, ordering coffee, time-consuming, but easy to tick off a list. Will go out for a good long run later on today - 15k. Like sticky I am doing fanny's recovery runs for her...

OP posts:
stickylittlefingers · 30/08/2011 10:29

it seems to be OK now, after the blip (of about 3 weeks) when there wasn't much happening at all! I don't take it beyond 12 miles in the training (or at least I've not so far). So I'm planning another 12 miles next Sunday - hopefully without the OMG my legs have turned to lead section at the end! Then a six mile run the next, but trying to keep it at HMP (I looked at moshi's post and thought she was doing something with a prison, before I realised what it must mean!!).

Do you make sure you eat lots of carb before your LSR? We have pasta on a Saturday night for that reason (also because we all love pasta in this family - too much :))
