good point, good point...

bonkers20 · 28/08/2011 07:59

So......are you running now? Are you back yet?

rhetorician · 28/08/2011 08:40

cheek! DD did us courtesy of staying asleep until 7.30; so I will go out later on

OP posts:
bonkers20 · 28/08/2011 10:27

Ooooh, I'd take sleep over running any day! Yay. Have a nice lunch and run later.

Just been out myself. As soon as I got home DS2 was trying to remove my trainers so that I could play train tracks with him. They don't factor toddlers into your post-run stretching regime do they?!

stickylittlefingers · 28/08/2011 13:11

bonkers20 we're train tracking here too - DD2 is totally addicted (should I be worried that she likes to talk for hours to bits of plastic??!)

12 miles this morning. Breezy out, against me for the first half, with me for the second. Didn't seem to help, though, as the splits show that I got much much slower on the last 3k - I just seemed to run out of juice altogether. 2:07, which seems reasonable to me! See if I can get it better next week.

fannybanjo · 28/08/2011 13:36

rhet enjoy your day! You made me larf last night with your dithering over going out. You sounded just like me! Hope you manage to get out later on.

sticky well done!! Great time, weather is crap today here too.

I've just done 13 miles. 2hr 4mins. Was ok, very hilly - ran twice through village called on the Hill, so you can imagine Wink, weather windy, wet and last mile was hard. I'm not in great condition after being ill but I managed it and it was very comfortable. 3 weeks until big day so at least I've managed to do the full 13 miles. Had post recovery drink of Milk, Banana and peanut butter - I'm sure it was debithescot* who recommended it - well it was lovely!

Wheelybug · 28/08/2011 15:33

Great running Fanny and SLF. I want to run... stomps feet (ouch).

Wondered if the cyclist amongst could advise - especially given some of the cycling versus running chat recently. What would you consider to be the 5K/10K equivalent when cycling ?

Thinking I might go out for a cycle tomorrow assuming my ankle improves as much tomorrow as it has been doing (not really any pain on walking today - still a bit swollen and tender). Up to Richmond Park, round it and back would be 11-12 miles. Does this sound a reasonable distance for a novice cyclist who is otherwise reasonably fit ?

MoshiMoshi · 28/08/2011 18:37

Super training runs, sticky and fanny! All bodes well for the big day.

wheely - cycling is not as hard a cardio workout as running so for the same effect you need to increase the length you spend cycling by 50%, eg if a 5K takes you 30 minutes, to cycle for the equivalent cardio effect you should cycle for 45 minutes. One loop of the park is not very much and I suspect a loop and a half or two would be better if you think you can afford the time.

fannybanjo · 28/08/2011 19:35

wheely poor you, nothing worse than itching to get out, I was the same last week BUT take it easy - as they say "act in haste, repent at leisure".... Don't forget even on a bike your foot going to be working hard. Moshi as always the font of knowledge! I've learned more on here in a month than in a lifetime!

thanks Moshi - would you have any idea based on that time what I could expect to finish the race in? Is there a percentage you knock off for racing....!!!? GrinBlush

rhetorician · 28/08/2011 19:57

fanny based on that time, given hills and weather and not being race conditions, you'll probably do under 2 hours for the half distance.

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 28/08/2011 20:08

Thanks rhet I thought that too re 2 hours but also thought I'm not even worrying about the time as really the GNR isn't a race really, it's a social occasion with loads of Lycra, Garmins and sweaty bodies! Definitely not going to kill myself and be more than happy with 1hr 59.59.... Grin

I'm going to have gander on Runnersworld and look at 5/10ks for after GNR WHEN DH relinquishes MY IPad that HE bought me for Christmas but I have to fight for the right to use it! Hmm

fannybanjo · 28/08/2011 20:09

Hang on Rhet - you been out for drunken run yet...?!

rhetorician · 28/08/2011 20:15

been, gone and back for the rest of the wine. hic! it's a long time since I drank more than a unit in one go...

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 28/08/2011 20:29

Well chin chin cos I'm joining you tonight! Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc on left, crisis on right, dips and flatbread balanced on head. Bank holiday nibbles. Love it!!

fannybanjo · 28/08/2011 20:30

Hahs crisps on right - not crisis! Confused

DrNortherner · 28/08/2011 20:32

Evening all, just a quick pop in to say I am running my 10k race tomorrow. I haven't run since Tues due to a sore right shin, which has eased off but is still a bit sore. I will take ibuprofen and use the gel and go for it, have to beat last years time!

Spent hours today walking round the Forbidden Corner in N Yorks (highly recommend it as a different and weird day out) Check it out!

rhetorician · 28/08/2011 20:35

good luck dr no - looking forward to hearing all about it!

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 28/08/2011 20:57

Good luck too DrNo - hope shins hold out.

rhetorician · 28/08/2011 21:00

I think you are all insufficiently impressed that I cooked lunch, cleaned house, ate lunch, drank 2 glasses of wine and still ran (can't miss a day of streak)...

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 28/08/2011 21:03

Rhet how on earth can you run after having wine?? Grin. I am however bowing at the alter of Rhet in sheer admiration of the management to multitask!

ibbydibby · 28/08/2011 21:05

Just creeping in rather guiltily as have not run for 2.5 weeks, no excuse other than been away on hol, and though I too runnng kit, decided I quite fancied some time off...now need to get back to it and find a few races to enter, feel like I am lagging behind somewhat. Have also missed the last 3 parkruns, am obviously addicted!

Good luck for tomorrow Dr No, have spent the last week in a holiday cottage fairly close to Forbidden Corner, but didn't go there. Looked interesting though. We were v lucky with the weather and did loads of walking, with only one rainy day on Friday. Despite being over 200 miles from home, we managed to bump into someone DS1 knows from his brass band, and weirdly they were staying in same village as us (bumped into them else where though)

Hoping to go out for a run tomorrow, fingers crossed.

rhetorician · 28/08/2011 21:06

well there was a cup of coffee and a lot of hydration in between, and the glasses were very small and drunk very slowly!! but it's all over now, as I am getting merrily pickled on the sofa. I can't remember the last time I drank at home...

OP posts:
N4NNY · 28/08/2011 21:11

I did my final long run today before my half marathon in 2 weeks. i managed to do the full 13.1 miles but found the last 2 miles so so hard mentally as well as physically. I'm hoping that on the day with the crowds support it will help lots. i was hoping for 2.45 but came in at 2.50 so very disappointed :-(

Themasterandmargaritas · 28/08/2011 21:11

You really did run Rhet? Shock Though I confess to having done some of my best runs after several glasses of wine and 2 hours sleep...

Good luck drNo, at your rate you will knock socks off your last year's time.

No childcare today, so I took the dc to a bizarre and rather wonderful glass recycling/art place followed by a trip through the Nairobi National Park where we clocked a lioness stalking a herd of buffalo, two rhinos right by our track and then a pride of huge lions on a giraffe kill. We did however have to picnic in the car as the baboons were on an intimidate-the-tourists-at-the-picnic- spot kind of a mood. Not a bad day. Grin

rhetorician · 28/08/2011 21:26

m&m, it's the sugar Wink; yes, I did. Not far, or fast, but I did it. Still have to get a long run in next week, although it's a busy week. Your children will have amazing memories - most kids only get to see those things in books or on dvds. Determined to take the DDs to Africa when they are old enough to both enjoy and remember it.

N4NNY - look on the bright side - you know you can do it, and I bet on race day you'll find that extra 5 minutes. Other runners will also spur you on - on my 10 miler I kept a lady in a bright orange shirt in my sights the whole way round, only to pass her at about 8 miles - I felt almost guilty. But lots of people spurred me on. You'll do brilliantly :)
