Did week 1 day 1 today. Popped my cherry! I really enjoyed it, although not that easy with DD3 and the buggy. When the running gets harder I will have to do it in the evenings with no buggy. Bluefin C25k iphone app was great - thanks for the tip. just got in a bit of a fluster with armband iPhone holder, after the warm up i had to take jumper off, got sorted again, then phone rang, had to take phone out of pouch again...lots of pissing about. Will be better organised next time.

sweetboysmum · 28/04/2011 15:14

Just popping in to say hello and congratulate you all on your achievements so far. I have followed your thread from the start. One night 6 weeks ago I had a word with myself and decided I really needed to sort out my unhealthy lifestyle once and for all. I love swimming but as I don't drive and have a toddler I never seemed to find the time. It was that night 6 weeks ago I decided I would try running. I always thought it wasn't for me and being very overweight (bordering on the obese) I thought my joints couldn't take it. So I went on mumsnet, did a little search and found you lot. You inspired me and have kept me going.

That first run was HARD and I thought I would die. I actually thought I would never manage it, but again, I came back on here for your words of wisdom and encouragement. My whole body hurt those first few days, but that cleared up. Then the shins hurt when I was doing 5 runs instead of the recommended 3 - oops. I am now very proud to say I have just come back from my second 30 minute run. Well, it's actually very slow snail paced jog, but hey, you've got to start somewhere! I'm averaging 4k for the 30 mins and aim to up it to 40 mins and then start working on my speed afterwards.

I've been using the podrunner intervals podcast which although has helped keep me going, isn't really to my taste music wise. Can't wait to get my own music on the phone instead. Someone asked about a podcast that gives your time whilst your music is playing. I have put Sportypal plus on my phone and it tells you after each km and how fast you're going if that's any help. Sorry for this very long post Blush but just wanted to say hi and let you all know I've found this thread to be so inspiring and helpful.

SluttySlutSlutOfTheSkies · 28/04/2011 18:00

Wow sweetboysmum, that is fantastic, well done! And you've done it by stealth - while we were all on here blethering, you were out there slogging away Grin. So pleased you have posted - it is hard at times, but so, so worth it. I wish I'd done it years ago. Keep running, and keep posting!

dinasaw · 28/04/2011 18:39

Hello everyone. Aren't we all doing well! I just got back from week 1 day 2. I meant to go yesterday but didn't get round to it. I had to be quite stern with myself to get out today but I made it.
DH came out with me for the first one but he's at work today so I had to go alone. Also there were quite a few people about which was a bit frightening. I put sunglasses on and headphones in and just got on with it.

Sarraburd · 28/04/2011 21:07

Hello all, I didn't yet have time to read through the threads yet and realise that it's been going a while so some of you are probably now at 10k but can I join?

Just did week one day two - have followed supersal over from no sugar dieting thread.

Was doing really well on exercise (circuits with British military fitness in park) and diet (lost the three stone baby weight I'd put on eighths last two dcs (also put on same with first dc and lost, don't now want to yoyo). And also, having always thought I HATED running, tried
Interval running and suddenly discovered
I actually really enjoyed it.

But then fell off wagon in September when DS2 had heart operation. He's just got all clear from second op so am climbing back on wagon with a stone or so to loose.

So, 5k here I go!

dubaipieeye · 28/04/2011 21:07

sweetboysmum, your post brought a tear to my eye! I am glad we've had you with us - even if silently up until now.

I am off to Portugal tomorrow and have teeny baggage allowance...contemplating not bringing running stuff and feeling sad about it. I used to say that I couldn't run as I couldn't breathe out of my nose - total lie nonsense and now here I am feeling sad about not being able to run on HOLIDAY. Madness.

dubaipieeye · 28/04/2011 21:09

Sarraburd...good luck, glad your DS has the all clear. That is wonderful.

SluttySlutSlutOfTheSkies · 29/04/2011 10:23

Welcome Sarraburd, hope you enjoy it here, and glad to hear your son has got the all clear.

dubai, have fun in Portugal - you could always try a spot of barefoot running along the beach if you get withdrawal symptoms Grin. I've been trying to breathe out of my nose more while running, tis v. hard! Am hoping I don't run along looking like I'm catching flies though Shock.

Just done W7R1, hill involved supersal, thought of you! Me no likey hills .....

Off to watch the wedding, happy running!

midtowner · 29/04/2011 21:27

sweetboysmum what a lovely post. Glad you have joined us at last!

dubai - have a good trip to Portugal. Grin at you feeling sad about not being able to run on your holiday Smile

Sarraburd - welcome

slutty - what is this breathing thing some of you have been talking about? Well done on your hill!

mollycuddles · 29/04/2011 22:18

Slutty - I agree hills are evil. Ran my 45 minute route today and had to go on up the road for a wee way until I was finally told it was time to cool down. There is an everlasting hill in the middle of that route. Not nice! Was going great until the hill and really had to force myself to keep going after. Need to find a new route for 45 minutes I think.

CalamityKate · 30/04/2011 00:16

Sweetboysmum that's a lovely post! Welcome! Also welcome to Sarraburd - great news about your DS!

I'm sulking ATM because I did my first 30 minute run the other day and was GAGGING to do it again, but I'm coming down with a cold, ache all over, feel shivery and sore throaty and doubt running would do me any good so I'm having a few days rest. Bah. Never thought I'd actually miss it; before, I'd have been secretly chuffed at being able to legitimately skive off!

Going to hopefully go out on Sunday evening and do my second half hour. My last one felt great.

sweetboysmum · 30/04/2011 01:12

Thanks for the welcome. Glad your ds is ok too sarraburd, you must be so relieved. Think I might have taken this new running addiction too far. Had a nice child free few drinks at the neighbours this afternoon, but still decided to go for my run (snail jog) a couple of hours later. Managed a half hour straight though despite the alcohol.there was also an incident with teenage boys shouting at me. Not sure if were thanking me for kicking their ball back to them, or insulting me. Thanks to my loud music I never heard them or tried to. Ignorance is bliss. Rest day tomorrow.

I noticed one of you are also doing the 30 day shred. I have this but afraid it'll be too much with the running. How do you find doing both?

CalamityKate · 30/04/2011 01:23

I do the shred on the days I don't run.

HRHDuchessLauraNorder · 01/05/2011 11:31

Have just completed W1 and although hot, sweaty, knackered and achy feeling just a bit pleased with myself!

I've been out for my run this morning, run for approx 25 mins because I had to be back for dh going to work. I found it a struggle today so am not going to up my time this week, just concentrate on running 30 mins until I find it a bit easier. Good luck to the rest of you for the week ahead.

SuperSal, whenever I run I always find bones in my bum which I didn't know existed.

Am going to make a concerted effort to go 3x per week in May and see how I get on. Am very cheered to hear of other people doing so well.

Keep on running everyone.

midtowner · 01/05/2011 20:53

We hiked yesterday - only a few miles, but it was very uppy downy, so I have some new aches today. Might go for a run later with dh, but need to get some studying in as well today (I have prevaricated and avoided it since arising before 9 this morning - it's now 4pm here).

NimpyWindowmash · 01/05/2011 21:46

Done W1D2 really enjoying it, feel fitter already!
CalamityKate - the shred... I never quite got a handle on that, Is that an exercise routine on DVD or something? - always wondered.

melodyangel · 01/05/2011 22:09

Wow lost you all for a while. Sounds like your all doing really well.

Have finally progressed from the treadmill to outside and find it so much better time seems to fly. Doing my first full 30 mins run tonight.

midtowner · 01/05/2011 22:12

Good luck melodyangel!

CalamityKate · 02/05/2011 08:49

Yes Nimpy it's a DVD. It's really good.

I ran last night for the first time since Monday; I've had a cough/cold/achey thing and didn't feel up to running although I was dying to. Well, last night went really well! I really seem to have sorted my breathing out which feels great Grin

Unfortunately, I'm having my gall bladder out on Thursday which will set my running back. Bit cross about that - I was really looking forward to cracking on with working towards running for an hour.

sybilfaulty · 02/05/2011 09:20

Sorry to hear about the gall bladder, Kate, wishing you a speedy recovery.

Just got back. Was very slow and very hot but did about 2 miles, in 3 stages with a bit of walking in between. Not running tomorrow but def on Wed. Must try to be a bit more regular at it.

Have a nice bank holiday everyone.

SluttySlutSlutOfTheSkies · 02/05/2011 09:32

Ouch Calamity - you poor thing, how long will you have to stay in hospital for? Will be thinking of you and sending speedy get well vibes :)

Molly! Hills. AAARGH. I agree. Ban them! Did W7R2 today and hill (albeit small) involved, tried supersal's dad's small steps and that seemed to help, although struggled to get breathing under control again.

midtowner when I think about how I'm breathing, I seem to get worse - read somewhere you need to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth but I find that hard iyswim. Am not explaining it very well. Tis more that when I don't overthink it, I don't struggle.

When Laura said, 'you've done 20 mins, only 5 to go', I was knackered and felt the need for a little Mr Blue Sky to see me through to the end. Very wobbly knees at the end though, felt like jelly.

  • hope you all manage to get some runs in whatever stage you're at - I still can't quite believe that I've got this far - or like someone else said, posting on an exercise thread!
