Brexit MegaThread - part 14

Thread 13. We had a debate about whether there should be a new one but if no one answers this the whole series after 8 years plus will come to their end.

Brexit happened, although one time Leavers do not seem to appreciate this.
It's worth noting I think that Brexit was a Tory initiative and the Tory party has just received its worse electoral thrashing since 1832. Could it be entirely unrelated?

What next? A gradual rapprochement with the EU? A Norway style agreement?

How many times do we need to tell you GlobeTrotter2000 ?

You have got your Brexit.

If we choose to campaign for another relationship with the EU leading to an eventual rejoining then we are perfectly entitled to do so.

With a bit of luck, a switch to DeepSeek will address these issues.

If I want to campaign for a closer post Brexit relationship with the EU
I'll not take advice from a mediocre AI

GlobeTrotter2000 · 30/01/2025 12:05

If we choose to campaign for another relationship with the EU leading to an eventual rejoining then we are perfectly entitled to do so.

So, why has it not happened? Could it be that the MN remain supporters have realised they only represent a small minority?

Oh you are funny like we all have time and money for that! Some of us have actual lives and families and all that.

But as per persons like yourself, Brexit is supposed to destroy everything anyway. So, who is going to force a rejoin, only those that do not have families and lives?

Regards a vote for the Liberal Party in 2019, I have yet to see a response from remain supporters such as:

“I voted remain in 2016 as I know for 100% certainty that a vote to leave will destroy all facets of life in the UK. However, despite such certainty, the reason I did not vote for the LibDems in 2019 to cancel the certain destruction of the UK is……………..”

Kindly fill in the blanks

Shows clearly that unless Reform can capture part of the contingent who despise Brexit, they aren't going anywhere except in Express polls.

It also shows the Tories current strategy is "well fucked".

GlobeTrotter2000 · 30/01/2025 12:12

@SerendipityJane and @Talkinpeace

It was a question, not advice.

However, I will keep a lookout for a new party who manifesto states:

The proof that UK must rejoin the EU is listed on MN by a small number of people who have proof that their opinion is shared by:

All UK persons. Approx. 68 million
All EU persons. Over 400 million.

Peregrina · 30/01/2025 14:27

So, why has it not happened? Plenty of groups are campaigning for rejoin. You just choose not to notice.

@Peregrina

Plenty of groups are campaigning for rejoin. You just choose not to notice.

What are these groups called?
What is the total number of people in these groups?
What does the total number represent as a percentage of the UK population?

GlobeTrotter2000 · 30/01/2025 20:44

@DuncinToffee

Never forget that the polls from 2013 to 2016 forecast a remain majority for the 2016 referendum, but it never happened. Hence, demonstrating that small samples of a few thousand can never extrapolated to 45 million.

The only polls that count are those in which all eligible voters are asked to take part. Brexit supporting parties in the current parliament make up Approx. 83% of all elected MPs.

Jason118 · 30/01/2025 21:09

A large majority of current MP's are indeed playing all the right Brexit notes, just not necessarily in the right order.

Peregrina · 30/01/2025 22:23

What are these groups called?
etc. etc.

I didn't know I had to sit an exam in the history of Brexit!. I am sure that this will come with time though.
'Brexit - the easiest deals in history? Discuss.'
I don't think you'd get many marks globetrotter for just rehashing a list of dates.

Hi globester, here is one of those groups. I am sure they are happy to help you with your inquiries

@DuncinToffee - I genuinely don't know why you bother, but kudos to you for bothering to try to engage. I suppose your responses might help lurkers Smile

Only benefit I can think of is the "privilege" Hmm of having my passport stamped, even when I'm only going "into" Germany during a 12 hour layover.

VAT on private schools. Couldn't have done it without Brexit.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 31/01/2025 11:28

@DuncinToffee

The European Movement was formed in 1955 (66 years before the UK left the EU). It has Approx. 21,000 members, about 0.03% of the UK population.

Hardly spectacular, and does not support the MN theory that the majority of the UK are against Brexit. However, it explains why Peregrina did not want to answer the question about membership of such groups.

As for the assessment table, are the figures based on provable measured data, or based on forecasts?

DuncinToffee · 31/01/2025 11:30

I didn't answer because it was a waste of time. You have got your Brexit, so we don't need an interrogation.

What would be good to hear is what you are doing to make it work? What Brexit action groups have you joined? Do Brexit action groups even exist? (Apart from Reform, UKIP in new clothes.)

The Brexit Files: from referendum to reset

For the past decade, UK in a Changing Europe has provided impartial, research-based analysis on a number of issues, but most particularly on UK-EU relations. Since before the 2015 General Election, we have evaluated those relations, traced and explained the tortuous Brexit process, and attempted to assess the impact that Brexit has had on the country.

This report brings together some of the best scholars working on these issues to consider a number of these questions on the 5th anniversary of the UK ceasing to be a member of the European Union.
