Thread 13. We had a debate about whether there should be a new one but if no one answers this the whole series after 8 years plus will come to their end.

Brexit happened, although one time Leavers do not seem to appreciate this.
It's worth noting I think that Brexit was a Tory initiative and the Tory party has just received its worse electoral thrashing since 1832. Could it be entirely unrelated?

What next? A gradual rapprochement with the EU? A Norway style agreement?

Barnier gone 😂beautiful work France

MaybeNotBob · 04/12/2024 19:39

Funny how Brexshiteers care more about hating people than about the destruction of our economy etc...

IItisymoi · 05/12/2024 12:42

Well if RN get any power in France the UK can kiss goodbye to any cooperation from france

Talkinpeace · 05/12/2024 12:58

Indeed.
Anybody who thinks that significant political instability in France
is good for the UK
needs to give their head a wobble

They'll be flying asylum seekers over ....

IItisymoi · 06/12/2024 10:12

Taking them (asylum seekers) over on the normal ferries then refusing to allow Brits to board for the voyage to France would be my preferred option.

DuncinToffee · 07/12/2024 10:03

More winning, tap water safety

“But UK rules mean products cannot be tested abroad; they have to be tested in the country in a certified lab of which there are now none.”

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2024/dec/07/brexit-problem-uk-tap-water-safety-at-risk-after-testing-labs-shut-down?

Talkinpeace · 07/12/2024 12:06

I saw that.
Madness that we have to rely on private labs that can choose to close.
Proper nationalised forensic and scientific testing labs are a common good

All that does is prove what was said all along.

The vast majority of people have no fucking clue about the EU, how it works, the UKs relationship with it as a member, and the implications of being outside it.

A very real and valid argument that the referendum should never have been allowed.

In a way, it's hard to actually fault Farage and his elk. They saw how thick the public were and decided they should be the ones to benefit from it. Morally bankrupt admittedly. But not unintelligent in itself.

What's the betting the Reform fraudster is now poised to make even more millions from the UK falling back into the orbit of the EU ?

Peregrina · 12/12/2024 12:34

A very real and valid argument that the referendum should never have been allowed.

Or it should have been done for sound reasons - not to solve disputes in the Tory party. And if so, there should have been an insistence on a threshold, say 66%, and that all the nations of the UK were in agreement.

Today EU ministers approved the extension of the passport free movement area (Schengen) to Romania and Bulgaria.

Will take effect from 1st January. The zone will then encompass 29 countries.

I suspect countries close to Russia may be grateful.

That said, I wonder how the European countries that lean to Russia are feeling since Russia dropped Syria so spectacularly ? They are hardly a reliable ally (although Britain has it's history ..)

IItisymoi · 13/12/2024 10:24

The French farmers are up in arms about Mercosour but this is largely because they haven't read the rules and understood that it actually protects EU farmers from being undercut by brazilian farmers who use growth hormones and deforestation to make their produce cheaper. Of course dumping slurry and mass rallies get media attention but they are often fighting the wrong cause.
It looks like France should get a new Prime Minister today but really the various factions in French Parliament have been 'non cooperating' for many years which has hindered many useful reforms. Too much democracy can stifle development and actually harm more people than those who are willing to compromise. Still, The UK small producers have recent regulations (mid 2023) to comply with today because the grace period has now ended.

Issues with new regs for British businesses selling in NI and EU.

Confusion, ignorance, lack of guidance from government - businesses unaware of the rule change and apparently not supported by government.

Sammy Wilson on tbe warpath...

mathanxiety · 13/12/2024 17:12

...as usual.

SerendipityJane · 13/12/2024 17:15

Sammy Wilson on tbe warpath...

I take it he is looking for the absolute morons who agitated for Brexit then ?

Peregrina · 13/12/2024 17:19

Who is Sammy Wilson, I thought, so I googled him. Seems he's a DUP member and they supported Brexit, didn't they? So why is he upset?

So why is he upset?

It’s the thing the DUP do best.

Is the question no one is asking.

I know Stewart Lee is very marmite, but there are some absolute gems in his routines for pithy comebacks. One (from Comedy Vehicle S3E3 "Context" which is in itself a masterpiece) is the line:

"Not the sort of jazz you like"

which can be reused to fit many situations.

So while we are all extolling the virtues of Brexit and saying we can't possibly be remainers as we are all enjoying the benefits of Brexit, you can hear the slow, measured, harsh N'ornI'land accent respond:

"Not the sort of Brexit you like,"

Personally I think every single person that publicly agitated for Brexit should have no platform to whine about it now. And if they dare - if the double dare - then they need to be made to publicly agree that whatever we have now is not what they wanted, and then reminded that before the referendum they were emphatically told (not warned, now. TOLD) that there was no version of Brexit that would do what they wanted. And no - you don't get two bites of the cherry.

SerendipityJane · 14/12/2024 10:34

Who would have thought that the powerhouse of sophisticated puerile humour would solve the vets crisis ?

I wonder if the current Guinness shortage in England, Wales and Scotland is related somehow to Brexit ? Given how sneaky the media can be in hiding truths in plain sight.

Brexshit "hardman" Steve Baker finally realising what he's done, if only in the terms of another country. What it's done to the UK is far worse.

https://www.irishtimes.com/life-style/people/2024/12/14/former-tory-minister-steve-baker-ireland-has-been-treated-badly-by-the-uk-its-fking-shaming/

Idiot...

"Hard man of Brexit" ?

Fucking moron, that's all.

If anyone is upset by such a description I am happy to add self serving, ignorant, and greedy.
