It's going to be 4 years since we withdrew our membership in European Union. Apart from the passport colour (some people might prefer) can anyone name one positive change which happened since then.

The UK got covid vaccinations approved and ready for use despite EU regulations. Does that count?

Peregrina · 05/12/2023 22:14

No that doesn't count. That was done under EU regs.

I can't think of anything - unless you think that the freedom to pollute rivers and seas with sewage is a bonus. Just like the old days of the 1950s!

And yet after 6 weeks the eu overtook the uk in vaccinations delivered. So overall that “benefit” lasted 2 months tops. And our Death rate from Covid is still absolutely shameful.

so, NEXT!!

Less retired british people in my home country using our healthcare
( I'm just joking!)

MissingMoominMamma · 05/12/2023 22:21

There aren’t any ☹️.

DGPP · 05/12/2023 22:24

Absolutely none

tescocreditcard · 05/12/2023 22:26

We were lied to. It's not our fault we were lied to.

OfficerChurlish · 05/12/2023 22:26

It removes the EU restriction which requires that member countries use a single VAT rate scale and thus allows multiple scales to be used - so for example Scotland or Wales or NI could opt for a base rate lower (to encourage exports/international sales and possibly tourism) or higher (to raise revenue/discourage exports) than the current UK base rate of 20%.

HappyHolidai · 05/12/2023 22:28

They couldn't, though, because VAT isn't devolved @OfficerChurlish.

If the could but they haven't, it rather suggests that factors other than EU prohibition are stopping it, ie: despite Brexit we haven't changed it.
(We have significantly reduced GDP though)

Brexit was great!

For one person.

Boris Johnson.

LongTermLurker · 05/12/2023 22:30

This thread comes up about once a month. No one will give you a single benefit.

gloriagloria · 05/12/2023 22:31

Sort of meant Nigel Farrage no longer had a raison d’etre?

PencilsInSpace · 05/12/2023 22:35

We could develop more sensible vape laws now we are not tied to the Tobacco Products Directive. We could legalise the sale of nicotine eliquids in containers larger than 10ml and tanks with a capacity greater than 2ml. While this regulatory miniaturisation is by no means the only factor that has led to the scourge of disposables I do believe it is now an important obstacle to us moving away from them.

That's it, that's all I've got.

PermanentTemporary · 05/12/2023 22:41

I think a group of people voted for Brexit for upward pressure on wages. Which has happened.

Of course we also have stagnated productivity, high inflation and increased COL, so it doesn't help much. And wages still lag behind other countries, apparently. And it can't definitely be ascribed to Brexit. But I think it's wrong not to mention it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 05/12/2023 22:43

Some people I know voted Leave to destabilise the UK. Brexit delivered for them.

So not a benefit for most, but a step in the right direction for Ex terrorists, terrorists and organisised crime gangs where I am.

PermanentTemporary · 05/12/2023 22:46

Oh... much higher immigration? The globalists voted for that, so they're presumably happy.

Fuck me, for a moment I thought we would get all the way to Wednesday before this weekly thread came up.

Op, you forgot to say "genuine question" in your opener.

And Nigel fucking farrage, didn't he move his family to Germany?

arethereanyleftatall · 05/12/2023 22:50

My salary went up. Swimming teacher. Found ourselves with not enough swimming teachers and they had to increase our salary to get us to work more.

It's the reason many people voted Brexitas far as I'm aware. In the hope that some of the lower paid jobs would have salary rises once there wasn't the surplus of potential employees.

Is that a farrago of mis-spelling? Only kidding. He is such a dick.

It's a reasonable question to ask.🤷‍♀️ Especially on the Brexit forum.🤣

Berlioz23 · 05/12/2023 23:22

Scrappage of FMD in pharmacies, admittedly very industry specific and immaterial. My wage also went up but probably more to do with Covid. The mistakes we make as a country, we can now only blame our own government…

We have taken back control of our borders, so we can choose how many migrants to let into the country. Additionally we no longer have our laws deciced by unelected bureaucrats, which is why the foreign secretary is unelected and migration is booming.
