It's going to be 4 years since we withdrew our membership in European Union. Apart from the passport colour (some people might prefer) can anyone name one positive change which happened since then.

Keir Starmer was on Breakfast time Friday 12. He gave an outline of what Labour would do if elected, but when asked the questions how he would do it there was no answer.

No mention of rejoining the EU.

So, it’s unlikely that Conservatives will win the next general election, but I am not convinced that a Labour win will change things for the better.

Labour (like most other winning parties) will spend years saying what they inherited was not their choice and the previous government is to blame for everything.

I use a simple non perfumed soap because I have sensitive skin. I find it better than the heavily perfumed brands.

Is this on the wrong thread or are you joining in with the pp's non sequiturs? 😊

The prosecutions made by the CPS occurred when Keir Starmer was the head of the CPS. That other prosecutions were made by others does not change that.

US is the richest country in the World, but does not have the highest life expectancy. Figured I can find are:

US 76 for 2021

UK 80 for 2021

EU 81 for 2021

However, within the EU there are large differences by region. Eastern European countries like Bulgaria and Romania are 10 years lower than average for the EU

There were 3 CPS prosecutions out more than 4 million. Why would those 3 be bought to his attention?

Jason118 · 14/01/2024 09:50

I never post on the wrong thread 😊

Yes, I did.

We have taken back control of our borders.
We are no longer governed by unelected people who are hugely distant from the rest of us.

We could have much more control of our borders under the terms of the Paris agreement which we never used. We know have record immigration and no access to it anymore and we were never governed by unelected people. Any laws that were imposed were debated in the European Parliament by elected MEP’s and were subject to national veto.

So you’re sticking to the party line but it doesn’t stack up.

Thank god for some sensible posting! I saw that poster too, it never promised the NHS would get it. It was making a point that instead of paying for a membership (and yes we got some of it back but dictated as where it should be spent instead of deciding that ourselves) we should be spending ALL of that money in our country to benefit us e.g. NHS.

But hey its gonna be hard for people to admit what you said it right

And apparently the fact that leaving the EU will have cost us £350 billion by 2035. It has cut our productivity and reduced our GDP by 4%, but hey, blue passports eh.

@travellinglighter And apparently the fact that leaving the EU will have cost us £350 billion by 2035. It has cut our productivity and reduced our GDP by 4%, but hey, blue passports eh.

It’s not a fact, but a forecast. The UK treasury forecast UK’s demise would commence 8 days after a vote to leave and the economy would be destroyed by Q3 2018. It never happened.

So, you will need to wait until 2035 to be able to say if the forecast was true or not.

The NHS has received approximately £180million more per week since Brexit in real terms as per the ONS. They could have received more if it were not for the £400billion spent on COVID and rising energy prices (neither of which are Brexit related)

Also, as per the ONS, unemployment in the UK has declined since Brexit.

SerendipityJane · 14/01/2024 11:03

Can's speak for the rest of the country, but it's gloriously sunny and still here - like yesterday. Makes me idly wonder if we'll see a subtle localised "climate tax/benefit" around the UK.

Some interesting discussion recently around the basic maths of recent polling that makes a Tory defeat inevitable, along with a suggestion that if we want comparators, then 1906 would make a lot more sense than 1992 or 1997.

(I'll leave space for discussion of Kier Starmers aftershave here -> <-, for the other half of posters. )

@LumiB you said "Thank god for some sensible posting! I saw that poster too, it never promised the NHS would get it. The poster Boris Johnson stood in front of said: let's give our NHS the £350 million the EU takes every week.

No, that £180 million includes the billions handed out to their mates for unseless PPE, and the useless Test & Trace. That's why they're trying to claim "highest ever spending on the NHS", but won't admit that most of it (our money) isn't going into running the NHS but is going to their mates, and to private companies like Palantir.

And as for the tired old trope "I don't think it'll be any different under Labour", is that really the best attack line Tufton Street can come up with? It shows just how sh!t this government really is!

HannibalHeyes · 14/01/2024 12:14

Oh, and before I forget - Rising energy prices are related to Brexit. The EU Energy Tariffs mean that people in the EU are paying much less for their energy than we are.

Can someone give me one benefit of Brexit.

Oh please, funding of the NHS is a Brexit benefit?

I admit my biggest worry at the moment is that Trump is likely to win in November
emboldening Putin's squirrels even more
no matter what the outcome of the UK's election

Immigration is key to growing the economy, which is why Rishi, who has been a migrant himself is so in favour of it.

Rish! was born in Southampton.

He was an overseas student, but most countries are sane enough not to count students in their migration statistics.

As far as I understand it, it is possible to migrate from Southampton.

Yorkshire may be God's own Country, but its still England.

Fulbright Scholarships are not emigration

As far as I know Southampton isn't in Yorkshire, but it is possible to migrate to and from both.

TBH his girls are at school in London and he's down here most weeks for the football
so the Yorkshire house is not really his base !

As far as I know even having children at school in London does not preclude you from having been a migrant.

Talkinpeace · 14/01/2024 16:17

As an immigrant to the UK I find the labelling of "migrating" from Hampshire to London rather offensive.
