(previous thread)

That's "king" as a suffix not a prefix. Also part of a phrase.

Obviously all true and I agree on Drs nurses etc. As a counter argument though, how many of those unemployed who are unable to find a job that "matches their experience/skills" are unable to find ANY job? Really, a huge proportion these million a half people can't do anything?! I don't believe that.

If you live in Merthyr and the jobs are in Watford
no matter how good your skills are
it will not happen.

There is a HUGE mismatch between the locations of the unemployed and of the jobs
and
an even bigger one between the physical requirements of the jobs (are, retail, warehouses, hospitality) and the jobseekers (over 50 and on a hospital waiting list)

Jason118 · 15/01/2024 22:13

As with many things Brexit, it's @LouiseCollins28 believing the opposite of objective reality. You believe many people choose not working (taking benefits and us for fools) over working. Your belief counts for nothing I'm sorry to tell you. There will be some, but not many, and certainly not enough to make any difference whatsoever to our skills shortage, health worker shortage, and adult social care shortage. These are 'now' facts and beliefs won't help change them.

beguilingeyes · 16/01/2024 07:48

Also, seasonal work largely needs casual workers. Not good if you need a regular income and why all those fruit pickers that went home after Brexit were so crucial.
Ageism plays a huge part. Try getting another job after 50. Most employers will go for the younger, cheaper person every time. I speak from experience. The NHS is an honourable exception to this.

It appears Brexit deflated the financial services jobs market in London like a pin to a balloon...

For a lot of Brexit voters that makes it a success.

Remember there was a deep sentiment of kicking the elite (i.e bankers etc) in the 'nads around the Leave campaign.

And I can't actually blame them in a way. Because it seems no matter how many tens of thousands of (for example) bankers you have allegedly earning millions each, the country never seems to prosper.

@LouiseCollins28 you're forgetting childcare costs as a major barrier to taking on low paid essential work.

SerendipityJane · 16/01/2024 13:00

afraid I am doing a C&P - lots of data available on the not working numbers providing facts, not beliefs .

This isn't the thread for you then.

Maybe there are things they could do, but if the job requires a move to another part of the UK it may not be easy or even economical.

I remember that those on Job Seekers Allowance could have their payment stopped if they refused a job they were capable of doing?

Potholes seem to be a common complaint and most likely applies to many parts of the UK. Maybe some of the 1.5 million could help
?

The thing is after the first couple of vehicles have driven over them, they'll go all squishy and become a skid hazard.

@HannibalHeyes Shortage of drugs.

The link you have provided makes the following comment:

It is not just a UK phenomenon. A recent European Association of Hospital Pharmacists survey reported that 95% of hospital pharmacists across Europe were experiencing shortages. An EU medicines shortage working party met last month to discuss a critical shortage of five key medicines, with impediments to supply said to include the impact of the war in Ukraine on supply chains, a European Medicines Agency recommendation to suspend use of about 400 medicines tested by an Indian laboratory, as well as attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and the extra regulatory paperwork that arises in some chains of supply due to Brexit.

Sounds very like that EU has the same issues as the UK for the same reasons.

Very true. Child care costs more per hour than UK minimum wage

Except right at the beginning it says 1.3m unemployed then says out of 10m economically inactive.

So your point doesn't answer what the 1.3m or 1.5m the poster you were answering are doing, just adds another 8.5m who are not technically unemployed because of caring / other earnings etc.

If you propose making productive use of the 1.5 million in that sort of way, then forget using them as substitute aggregates to cover potholes. Converting them into biomass would be a much better solution, renewable energy, etc.

I can see the adverts in my minds eye now, though sadly Parky is already 6ft under so another "face" will be needed 😉

HannibalHeyes · 17/01/2024 00:35

Soylent Green anyone?

Now we're talking ! With some clever chemistry we could probably extract some drugs and recycle them too.

Brexit was never intended to sever all ties with the EU.

The author of the article records that UK GDP has outgrown Germany since 2016.

SerendipityJane · 17/01/2024 13:08

Brexit was never intended to sever all ties with the EU.

History disagrees with you. In particular the bits where no one was talking about leaving the customs union or the single market, and yet "we" left both.

OP posts:
SerendipityJane · 17/01/2024 13:12

Fascinating. I do like the way the headline protects the sensitive from the horror the actual article reveals about the UK having to ask the EU for a favour. A favour I suspect the poor civil servants sent on this snipe hunt knew well in advance would be declined.

The leaflet sent to all UK households said a vote to leave would mean UK would no longer be in the single market.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 17/01/2024 14:38

DUP were always going to object to checks as it results in NI being treated differently to Great Britain which is a violation of the GFA.

pointythings · 17/01/2024 16:14

The DUP wholeheartedly supported Brexit and are now whining about the inevitable and predictable consequences. Losers.
