(previous thread)

That's "king" as a suffix not a prefix. Also part of a phrase.

Well timed blog post

HannibalHeyes · 09/02/2024 17:01

"In any number of published comment pieces, Brexiters layer falsehoods upon half-truths upon questionable assumptions, in ways which can only be unpicked through line-by-line ‘fisking’, which is incredibly time-consuming, and not especially effective."

Remind you of anyone?

I am still in touch with at least one Dover docks colleague.
The customs clearance facility 22 miles away from the border is just insane.

Only people who do not understand trade or human attitudes to paperwork could have thought it up.

HannibalHeyes · 09/02/2024 17:13

Wow! The whole post goes on to describe Global's (and Clavinova's) postings perfectly!

It's almost certainly deliberate, so Tory donors can smuggle anything they like in to the country.

And then, if some dodgy meat comes in from somewhere it can be used as a stick to beat the EU for allowing it to come through France.

Dishonesty is the mainstay of this government...

DuncinToffee · 09/02/2024 17:53

Careful Hannibal or you will get a telling off from MN, as I said a well timed piece Smile

Brexit benefit?

The answer almost certainly lies in Brexit.

Up until the EU referendum, the share of young Britons who said they "strongly dislike" the Conservative party was steady at 20%.

Since the vote to leave the EU it has climbed steadily and is now double that level.

Yes, I wondered if he'd gone through this thread picking apart Globetrotter2000's posts.

I'd rather not have Brexit.

But if the dud cheque that paid for it causes the destruction of the Tory party, it won't have been in vain.

That's why they're trying to disenfranchise the youth from voting with their various voter suppression measures. Not to mention the "nothing will change under Labour" line that their bots are trying to push all over social media...

The evidence from the US suggests that isn't the best strategy. MAGA-types (and the equivalence to Brexiteers is too striking not to be useful) are pretty lazy at the best of times. There were signs that if you push a message "nothing will change" then a lot of them will not bother voting. This becomes even more the case if you try to push a narrative that the system is rigged.

If it's rigged, why bother ?

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/feb/10/uk-farmers-vow-to-mount-more-blockades-over-cheap-post-brexit-imports-and-supermarket-prices

Now this is not what I would expect from Brexit voting farmers. Copying the French for a starter. I am glad that they are worried about the import of cheap food.

I had to drive a lot in 2015/2016. It was rare to see a field that hadn't got a pro-Brexit hoarding in it (all in line with planning permission I am sure). M5, M6, M4, A420, A419, M42, M40 certainly.

I don't have any sympathy for people who are getting exactly what they voted for.

@SerendipityJane
Snap
I cannot remember if I was posting under this name then or my LQ one
(yes, MNHQ know they are both me)
but the farmers and fishermen bragging about how they expected to be quids in from Brexit
sadly do deserve what they got.

I drove past a former asparagus field today - skilled short season workers no longer come to the UK
I suspect it will be Halloween pumpkins this year.
Cash crop but poor for food security

Peregrina · 10/02/2024 20:00

M5, M6, M4, A420, A419, M42, M40 certainly.

M25 also.

HannibalHeyes · 10/02/2024 20:11

Likewise, I remember all the "No deal, no problem" signs in the fields by the motorways. Bunch of muppets...

Inspired by French action, British campaigners say they will continue slow tractor protests after Dover roads were blocked

There goes the 'whatabout EU farmers' argument Smile

Thing is, in the UK, who'd notice a go slow ?

The EU will tell the UK on Monday that it must ease visa procedures & costs for scientists or risk missing out on the full benefits of the @HorizonEU research programme

https://www.ft.com/content/280a070c-e708-4885-89c6-d213eaebd5b1

Calculations by the Campaign for Science and Engineering, a UK pressure group, said that the upfront costs for a researcher coming to the UK on a five-year Global Talent visa would jump from £3,743 to £5,890. For a family of five the fee would increase to £20,980 from £13,372 currently

GlobeTrotter2000 · 12/02/2024 17:45

Read the Brexit and Beyond article. I can't see the evidence that proves remain forecasts of:

Job losses of between 500,000 and 800,000
GDP 4% lower by Q3 2018. This has now been revised to 2035
An emergency budget after a Vote to Leave that would cripple the UK
World War 3 predicted by Cameron.

All came true.

However, measureable improvements since the vote to leave include:

Lower unemployment since 2015
Increased funding for NHS in real terms
Increased wages for those at the lower end of the wage scale.

Not yet anyway. The Middle East gets scarier by the day and if Trump gets back in Ukraine could be toast.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 13/02/2024 10:09

Armargeddon didn't happen, all hail brexit.

So, a remain supporter has finally acknowldeged that remain forecasts justified the name Project Fear.

It may explain why neither of the major parties, Conservative and Labour, have not included rejoin the EU in their campaigns in the run up to the next General Election..
