(previous thread)

That's "king" as a suffix not a prefix. Also part of a phrase.

@Chersfrozenface And yet Labour's slogan is now "Make Brexit Work". No EU, no single market, no customs union

Yes. Another U-Turn by Labour.

Both Labour and the Tories have factions pulling the parties in different directions on the subject.

Why are you rabbiting on about what happened up to seven years ago now?

We have got Brexit. It's not clear whether it's to your liking or not, but it's happened. What are your suggestions for making it work. I recall that Jacob Rees-Mogg was put in charge of identifying Brexit benefits, but I don't recall him identifying any.

OK so blue passports, which we could have had anyway. Pints of champagne, which there is no real demand for, and which is going to be defined as a metric measure anyway, and with metric measurements being a global standard rather than an EU one.

Polluted rivers and streams and allowing banned pesticides into the UK are not ones which I regard as benefits.

Peregrina · 22/01/2024 14:56

Yes. Another U-Turn by Labour. Not by Sadiq Khan though.

Brexit appears to be all about living in the past

@Peregrina Yes. Another U-Turn by Labour. Not by Sadiq Khan though.

My view is that Sadiq Khan instigated Project Fear No. 2 to divert attention from his performance as Mayor.

What are your suggestions for making it work

As the great industrialist, Sir John Harvey Jones Chairman of ICI, wrote in his book, Making it Happen, it is necessary to have a collective push in the same direction for progess to be made.

UK MP's seem more interested in running down oppostion and point scoring than identifying needs and their solution. This is why turnout in GE is poor.

Also, as there have been several major World events since the UK left the EU, whichever Party is in power will likely spend their time on the most pressing need. The outcome is that Brexit will continue to be pushed into the background regards priorities.

prettybird · 22/01/2024 15:36

Having joined ICI as a graduate trainee while JHJ was Chairman (and having read "Making it Happen"), having met the man and having benefitted myself both as an individual and while working for the company from the Single Market, I think JHJ would have been horrified at the direction of travel of the UK caused by the Referendum (and the lies that swayed people to vote for it Angry) and the damage that Brexit has done to the economy, particularly leaving the Single Market HmmConfused

GlobeTrotter2000 · 22/01/2024 16:20

@prettybird

I remember JHJ saying that an over valued pound was a hindrance to exports from the UK.

and the lies that swayed people to vote for it

Pure speculation as JHJ died in 2008, five years before Cameron announced in 2013 there would be a referendum on EU membership if he was elected in 2015.

Voters had the option to cancel Brexit in the 2019 General Election, but declined.

It appears so for the poster, Peregrina. They often refer to the 1975 referendum.

Peregrina has long been suspected of being a bit of a lightweight round these parts. The serious money is still debating the repeal of the Corn Laws.

Politicians terrified of a u-turn accusation and desperately trying to obfuscate this have been a big part of the loss of trust.

If the road in front of you gets closed then only an idiot doesn't u-turn.

If you believe that any uk party, campaigning on a ticket including 'rejoin single market', has a chance of power then its you that needs to u-turn

As it is even 'closer relationship' is walking a fine line.

SerendipityJane · 22/01/2024 17:08

On the basis it was hatred of the EU that fuelled the vote much more than love of the UK, the best strategy would be to suggest rejoining as a the coup de grace to finish the EU off. You'd have to beat the remaining Brexiteers* off with a shitty stick

*"Remaining Brexiteers". Jung has been busy in the afterlife.

HMRC customs officers found pig anuses in wheelie bins
from Bulgaria
to be turned into ready meals in the UK
...illegal to sell in the EU
but the UK does not do import clearance ....

HannibalHeyes · 22/01/2024 21:32

Yay! A Brexit bonus! We can have pig's anuses from Bulgaria that we couldn't have while we were in the EU!

Further proof that the EU's (Germany) decision to allow weaker and less developed Eastern European countries into the EU was a mistake as they are not up to standards.

@HannibalHeyes Yay! A Brexit bonus! We can have pig's anuses from Bulgaria that we couldn't have while we were in the EU!

When UK was in the EU, they would not have checked anything which had arrived from other EU members on the basis that all EU members were in compliance with EU standards. That meat from Eastern European countries is not up to EU standards is further proof that Germany's decision to allow; Bulgaria, Romania, etc,.... for fear they would rejoin the USSR was a big mistake.

It may explain why so many EU members are tightening their borders as they realise that open borders are high risk. Once borders go up, FOM is destroyed and the EU becomes defucnt.

My recollection was that John Major was one behind the push to include eastern European ex - Communist states.

Mystic Dan! How did he manage to get everything so perfectly correct?

That's hilarious if it wasn't so unbelievably far from the truth that it hurts.

Peregrina · 23/01/2024 21:28

You know what the Brexiters to say to the above: But Ukraine, Covid. As though they did not affect any other countries.

Peregrina · 23/01/2024 21:31

To be fair to Hannan, who now has a seat in the Lords, even after the Referendum he stated that no one was talking about leaving the Single Market. Clearly he wasn't in tune with the true Brexit believers.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 24/01/2024 11:28

@Peregrina My recollection was that John Major was one behind the push to include eastern European ex - Communist states.

Yes. So he, like Tony blair, could make a fortune,

John Major net worth is estimated at US$50 million

Tony Blair net worth is estimated at US$60 million

To be fair to Hannan, who now has a seat in the Lords, even after the Referendum he stated that no one was talking about leaving the Single Market. Clearly he wasn't in tune with the true Brexit believers

Been through this before too. However, for the benefit of those who may not have read Cameron's leaflet sent to all UK households, it reads:

Losing our full access to the EU’s Single Market would make exporting to Europe harder and increase costs.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 24/01/2024 11:33

@SerendipityJane And the US.

Yes. As the US hoped EU expansion would result in Russia being bordered by NATO members.

pointythings · 24/01/2024 11:35

@GlobeTrotter2000 are you denying that leaving the single market has made exporting to the EU harder and has increased costs? I hope not.

Peregrina · 24/01/2024 11:39

Obviously Hannon was not 'on message'.

None of them were. They hadn't the foggiest what they wanted if the won. E. g Farage extolled the virtues of Norway before the Referendum. It's only afterwards that the hard line Brexiters got most of their way. - i.e out of the EU completely but without the promised benefits. Which they gloss over because that is everyone else's fault.

HannibalHeyes · 24/01/2024 12:52

So hang on - Major and Blair making money is bad.

But all of the main people driving Brexit only did so in order to make themselves wealthier. So that's a good thing?
