(previous thread)

That's "king" as a suffix not a prefix. Also part of a phrase.

@SerendipityJane 'all lies and jest, still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest'

Damn those two knew what they were writing about.

That one. Paul Simon was the sole songwriter. Gorgeous voice, but Art Garfunkel never wrote a thing.
Hence we had Still Crazy After All These Years and Graceland and Art had no solo career.

this idea of losing candidates "gifting" their votes to other candidates is absurd and you've the cheek to think this is more democratic.

That's not even a preference system where the rules are known in advance. What you're proposing is that candidate a) gives their votes to candidate b) if they lose, with no reference whatever to what the voters for candidate a) wanted.

You clearly want more power for party machines and less for the voters. Consider this example,

I'm the voter, I want to vote for candidate d) but I either suspect, or this candidate has openly stated, that they will give their votes to candidate a) if d) loses. I don't want candidate a) to win so not only will I not vote for a) I now can't vote for d) either. If candidate e) made the same deal with a) as d) did, that's 3 candidates I now can't vote for. How's that better? Talk about disenfranchisement!

I won't take lectures on democracy from anyone who lives in a monarchy that has an unelected second chamber.

Even the Americans - much as it may pain me to say - have more democracy. And that's with the ludicrous electoral college system.

I'll wager you won't put anywhere as much effort into explaining to me how Lord fucking Cameron being foreign secretary is democratic.

I was catching up on the latest Private Eye this morning.

Unregulated meat imports - another Brexit win.

Talkinpeace · 21/01/2024 13:50

"we've had enough of unelected bureaucrats"

oh look, Cameron is back !!

the hypocrisy never ends

The intrigue around Braverman's actions in the background adds a nerve-wracking element to the unfolding political dynamics.

Script for a new tv show?

New Brexit checks ‘pose existential threat’ to UK fruit and flower growers

This will of course be presented as the EU bullying us. Because Leavers were told that we were special and held all the cards.

This far in, leavers can go fuck themselves.

I’m so sad and disgusted at what Brexit and 14 years of the Tories have done to our poor country. Nobody deserves to have their country ruined. Everything that is public is basically fucked and broken and the majority of people are more sad and frightened and anxious and angry than I have ever seen them, just hoping to be able to survive hand to mouth at best.

The corruption the Tories have brought into public life and the cynicism and lack of trust that breeds and the massive toll that all that is taking on democracy is absolutely terrifying. The general election really can’t come soon enough just to bring a bit of hope for the future.

They are only continuing where Tony Blair and his lies to drag the UK into an unnecessary and illegal war began. A million people marched for peace to be told to fuck themselves. Not quite the same as the six million plus who disappeared up Farages arse, admittedly. But you have to start somewhere.

@SerendipityJane The fact the 2016 referendum had none of that really begs the question whether it actually deserves to be a called referendum at all.

Once 498 MP's (76% of the UK's lawmakers) voted to trigger Article 50, the referendum became history.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 22/01/2024 13:54

@HannibalHeyes That's not what I asked. I asked if youthought it was fair.

My definition of fairness is to provide what was selected by the majority of registered voters who make the effort to vote.

So, if the majority of voters continue to vote for Conservatives and Labour (who have never campaigned to change the FPTP system), then FPTP shall remain.

Including 80% of Labour MPs.

There was a three line whip to vote in favour of triggering Article 50.

The leader of the party, who ordered the whip, was Jeremy Corbyn, that well-known right-winger.

I can now see how it took so long for female suffrage ...

@Talkinpeace Unregulated meat imports - another Brexit win.

Where did the meat originate from?

"we've had enough of unelected bureaucrats"

Was that not the leave campaign comment about EU commissioners?

GlobeTrotter2000 · 22/01/2024 14:08

@Chersfrozenface The leader of the party, who ordered the whip, was Jeremy Corbyn, that well-known right-winger.

Labour back tracking on their support for the 2016 referendum result was the reason the UK did not leave the EU on 29 March 2019.

HannibalHeyes · 22/01/2024 14:10

Ah, Globe taking things out of context and arguing against herself again...

And yet Labour's slogan is now "Make Brexit Work". No EU, no single market, no customs union

Yes. Another U-Turn by Labour.
