And there is now a political industry emerging with a credo of "Do Brexit Right", which that vile little man Farage is trying to hang on the coat tails of.

Let us hope that he splits the Tory vote at the next election, and consigns them and the Brexit party to history.

verdantverdure · 08/02/2023 17:18

The only reason this Brexit is standing is it's been nailed to it's perch.

it's quite hard to make me laugh about Brexit because of the damage it's done to this country.

But that did Grin

The optics are starting to look interesting. If, as I suspect, both Labour and Conservative parties make a key plank of their manifesto some sort of bollocks about "getting Brexit right", then our FPTP system may very well see a Farage type loony party holding the balance.

However, once again, the Tories will have to fight the fact that a lot of fresh voters will have grown up under them. Much as in 1997 there was a large uptick in people voting who had never known anything else.

Brexit caused small boats crisis.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-english-channel-migrants-small-boats-b2277505.html

Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal is the primary factor in the crisis of small boat crossings in the English Channel, a new study has found.

“The PM must acknowledge the main factor for creating the small boats problem so he can fix it. Sunak’s difficulty is it would mean recognising key mistakes his gov’t made, and were warned about but ignored.”

DuncinToffee · 09/02/2023 10:56

🦄Talking about the fact that Brexit has damaged the economy is a "fake conversation", says the new Business Secretary.

The deal makes no change to the UK and Italy's key trading regulations - from tariffs and quotas to customs rules - but she said it would help improve trade between the nations

I needed cheering up after all the bad news recently... and this does it.... what a tool!

verdantverdure · 09/02/2023 22:48

Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal is the primary factor in the crisis of small boat crossings in the English Channel, a new study has found.

The decision to leave the EU without a returns agreement in place has led to the “skyrocketing” number of dangerous crossings, according to a Durham University report.

Under a mechanism known as the Dublin Convention, the British government could previously ask fellow EU nations to take people back if they had passed through safe countries en route to the UK.

“The government used to have a deal on returning migrants, but it ended with Brexit and no alternative was agreed,” said study author Professor Thom Brooks. “This made it far more difficult to return any new arrivals, and numbers have skyrocketed after this deal stopped.”

Didn't catch the whole story but AZ to open factory in ROI and RnD might go too.

Of course nothing to do with Brexit, its UK tax system....

HannibalHeyes · 10/02/2023 11:48

I wonder why the Tories are so desperate to leave the ECHR...

I wonder what about "highest electricity bills in the world" would put companies off building factories in the U.K.?

Not to mention huge staff shortages across most industries.

AstraZeneca is to locate its new factory in Dublin, not Macclesfield, citing UK taxes on revenue, not profit, of approximately 25% as the reason for the decision.

This rate is among the highest in tbe world, but that doesn't stop John Redwood from fuming about the UK being undercut by Irish tax regs.

The problem is that companies don't just look at tax rates... after all, they can change pretty quickly!
Its schools, transport, access to healthcare... ability to attract scientists et al easily, the UK is out of Horizon, SM and FOM and has a complex and expensive immigration system.

ROI has none of these disadvantages.

Our life sciences aren't yet finished by any means but unless someone acts quickly.. they will decline.

borntobequiet · 10/02/2023 15:48

ROI has none of these disadvantages.

And as we’ve pointed out many times, great advantages - a welcoming, youthful, well-educated, English speaking population and an already established and thriving pharmaceutical sector.

I read it as the price caps (on medicines) are very strict within the NHS, effectively forcing AZ to run at a loss on these drugs...?

So much for the calls to make the NHS less wasteful!

Corp Tax in the UK after the increase will still be lower than France and Germany.

TBF the BBC is the UK's state (Govt) broadcaster, they aren't going to bite the hand that feeds them.....

They save that for late night news and other programs/radio that few watch/listen so they can then claim "balance"

Sorry forgot to say that!

“England’s difficulty is Ireland’s opportunity” - as someone of Irish heritage born in and resident in England I’m saddened by the way it’s has come to this. Fuck Brexit and the divisions it’s created.

Another thick Brexiteer in the Telegraph

Bwah bwah bwah "If only I had known" bwah bwah bwah. Now fuck off and buy a bridge.

I see very little reason to be nice to Brexiteers. Especially the ones who "had no idea this would happen". Although as previously noted, it's hard to hear with your head up your arse.

Brexit “acting as a drag on our growth and inhibiting the UK’s potential”.

“The main thrust of it was that Britain is losing out, that Brexit it not delivering, our economy is in a weak position,” said the source

Brexit in its current form is damaging the UK economy and reducing its strategic influence in the world.

The Office for Budget Responsibility has predicted that, over the 15 years from 2016, Brexit will reduce the UK’s GDP per capita by 4%.

Much of the focus of the meeting was on how a Labour or Tory government would use a scheduled review of the Brexit trade and cooperation agreement “to reduce the some the current frictions” that have seriously damaged UK exports to the EU in particular.

Alexandra2001 · 11/02/2023 22:02

Sunak is no more likely to rebuild relations with the EU than he is to convert to Christianity.
The EU is about rules, regulations and treaties (mainly about trade) and i just do not see the Tories or Sunak (a Brexitier) agreeing to pay the EU to be in and abiding by EU treaties and rules etc.

Aside, as we all know, the EU has to agree to what the UK wants and we are in an exceptionally weak position, we have no money, poor growth, a bad inward investment choice... why the heck should the EU help us?

Brexit has always been an opportunity for the EU and Labour are incredibly stupid having anything to do with the Tories on this, that article is depressing on many fronts.

That’s an interesting and impressive list of attendees, among them some seriously competent and clear headed people (I exclude Gisela Stuart from that group).
