Part 10 of our long running thread.

Not sure what to say, really, other than it is worse than I feared.

Strap in, folks. It's gonna be a rough ride...

A peaceful new year from me as well. I've managed to snag myself a new job just when I wanted one, so looking forward to the crazy life that is working in the NHS again. And also cats.

Good luck in your new job x

SerendipityJane · 31/12/2022 17:08

Judging from the amount of work I have had recently involving multiple and myriad couriers and customs processes, 2023 will make 2022 look like a cakewalk, with respect to exporting.

I've done very well out of my Royal Mail shares (thanks Vince). However I would not be surprised if they went the way of Woolworths next year. They are systemically unable to handle the Phase 3 border model. Presumably as a hostage to Johnsons oven-ready lies, they haven't been given the headroom to invest for it. Not that it will leave them too far behind their rivals.

Happy New Year

I may even have a flutter

Isn't the received wisdom that spring elections favour the Tories ?

In a related debate about the attempts to skew the electoral process with voter ID, I noted an interesting suggestion that the long held truism about older voters being natural Tories may no longer hold true. And that's before the recent cull in the UK. If we look at these threads alone, there are a lot of what should have been shoe-in tory votes that most certainly aren't.

I'm less certain about a planned spring election. It would take a nerve and prescience that Sunak not only doesn't possess, but doesn't have access to. The only pressure I can see for a spring election would be camp Boris, who need a lost election to resurrect their man. And last time MPs put out for Boris, he fucked them over. Although I can see Sunak being such a disaster they forget that.

I think things will get much worse by April.
Tories will jump ship and get De Pfeffle back to "save" them.
Interestingly stats showing gen x onwards don't get more Conservative as they age.
No good news for the tories.
Add to that the huge number of young people who will vote for the 1st time

SerendipityJane · 01/01/2023 17:39

It's a given the Tories won't win the next election. I would certainly put money on that. To fuck all odds.

Whis is why can't see Boris actually returning just to lose it. His hour will come when they are in opposition and he can lord it over the losers with "I told you so".

If I was camp Boris, then right now I would be moving heaven and earth to ensure Rishi remains pinned like a butterfly as PM. Which is probably the quickest route to an electoral wipeout.

If i were ever to bet.... i'd bet on the Tories winning again, the younger voter NOT voting and the older ones, happy with their 10% pension rise... voting in large numbers for the Tories.

My in-laws, dead against any strike action & seeing their grand daughter stressed in her NHS job.. don't agree nhs staff should get an inflation equalling pay rise.. as there is "no money" .....
... i pointed out that there was enough money to give them all a 10% increase in their pension... they did not like that at all but apparently that is "different"

SerendipityJane · 01/01/2023 17:53

I've done very well out of the Tories. Hell would still have to freeze over before I voted Tory though.

It won't be a labour landslide

HannibalHeyes · 01/01/2023 18:30

Michael Heseltine on the deception of Brexit...

Alexandra2001 · 01/01/2023 19:44

Don't discount the Tories and the media's ability to blame someone else for the state of the NHS, Education and to put Austerity firmly at the door of Labour who "wrecked the economy"

I just think that the fact that so many in the UK still believe in brexit, proves how thick we really are........ so anything is possible!

SerendipityJane · 01/01/2023 20:26

We return to how new ideas get accepted: old people die (courtesy Arthur C Clarke).

I remain sceptical of being told "so many people still support Brexit". At this time of year I am reminded how Bob Geldof secured so many big names for Band and then Live Aid.

Also I don't give a rats arse who "supports Brexit" and then doesn't vote. In a country where a 25% turnout raises no eyebrows, someone isn't voting.

Peregrina · 01/01/2023 21:04

......and the older ones, happy with their 10% pension rise... voting in large numbers for the Tories.

Don't forget that we older ones have children and grandchildren and can see how difficult it is for them.

Thankfully, we are not all like that, and besides which, there was plenty of money when it came to handouts for Tory mates. Let's hope that they get wiped out at the next election.

My mum despairs of this govt despite their handouts to keep pensioners sweet
