Part 10 of our long running thread.

Not sure what to say, really, other than it is worse than I feared.

Strap in, folks. It's gonna be a rough ride...

And I missed this beauty in amongst all the other bullshit;

A single market is a great idea, i.e. all of Europe's markets open to all of Europe's (and the world's) producers and makers.

And how do you organise a single market? You don't have rules? You don't have minimum standards that members have to adhere to?

I can't fathom how someone can be this stupid!

mathanxiety · 20/11/2022 04:02

what I have a problem with is supra national authorities...

Like the UK?

TheElementsSong · 20/11/2022 06:31

I'm unsurprised by the xenophobic zealotry. It's quite beautiful in its raw honesty. And it is the heart of why so many Leavers voted the way they did, however they tried to disguise it with clouds of verbiage for years. As the Sunlit Uplands continue to prove a receding mirage, those who still admit how they voted have nothing left but to reveal their true reasons. They are xenophobes.

Peregrina · 20/11/2022 08:07

Full export controls are implemented on what we are selling.

Ah but, this is an example of the perfidious way the EU is behaving.Wink The Brexiters complained about the EU being a hide bound rules based organisation, but then they are surprised when they go and apply the rules.

Peregrina · 20/11/2022 08:12

I shouldn't put words into other's mouths, but surely the UK is OK because England dominates? Wales, Scotland and NI don't count in the scheme of things to the Brexiter, as we have seen with the NI Protocol that they negotiaged.

I was going to point that out but then decided I couldn't be bother engaging with stupidity. Wink

The UK isn't supra national. The UK is a nation, its our nation. It has nations within it too but they are currently under a single head of state and a single head of government, in spite of some people's determination to pretend otherwise.

Basically no, IMO you allow everyone to sell what they have to sell, you know like happens in a market and the customers decide what they want to buy.

pointythings · 20/11/2022 09:25

And do the people selling have to be open and honest about what's in their stuff, i.e. dangerous substances or unsafe toys, or do some people have to die so that buyers can then decide not to buy?

Jason118 · 20/11/2022 09:32

Otherwise known as a race to the bottom, and @LouiseCollins28 is hell bent on making sure we are the first to get there. The naivety is astounding.

SerendipityJane · 20/11/2022 09:45

Apple are more than free to make a UK only version of their connector if they wish. And I bet that if they don't, it will somehow be Keir Starmers fault, eh Louise ?

SerendipityJane · 20/11/2022 10:50

I can't fathom how someone can be this stupid!

When I was learning (that's a trick statement right there, I am still learning 😀) I was once told that your intellect is like a fantastically powerful spotlight that you can move around the landscape to work out what is going on.

The person that told me that then added that is was a shame some dozy fuckers insisted on pouring cement into the wheels so it can never move around and they can't actually light up anything with their intellect.

It would be crass of me to say that some people on this thread are burning pinholes in the sky with the application of their intellect, but that's never stopped me before.

LouiseCollins28 · 20/11/2022 13:16

Again people are mistaking disagreeing with me, with calling me stupid. Entertaining though that is it does get wearing after a while.

Apple can make what they like. The EU can set the terms of access to their market as they like, and they have. If I were Apple I'd just append a massive premium to the purchase price for European spec Apple products and tell European consumers to write to their MEP if they are unhappy, but what Apple will actually do, who knows.

Also who knows what Britain ends up with! Not sure how I'd be blaming Starmer unless he arrived in Downing St and then immediately aligned us with EU standards. If it happens before an election he wins then I'll blame whoever does agree to it.

pointythings · 20/11/2022 13:50

I don't think @LouiseCollins28 is stupid at all. Terrifying, but not stupid.

Peregrina · 20/11/2022 13:58

The UK is a nation, its our nation. It has nations within it too but they are currently under a single head of state and a single head of government, in spite of some people's determination to pretend otherwise.

Thus speaks a Little Englander who appears barely conscious that the UK and England aren't synonymous. Scotland retains its own legal system. There are devolved Governments, (but not as there should be for England), so we can forget about those. Other nations have the same head of state as the UK, but this doesn't make e.g. Canadians UK citizens.

I'm not so sure. She seems to think that Apple will sacrifice the richest market in the world out of spite...

Mirabai · 20/11/2022 14:09

Apple are ending lightning cables - whether that will simply be for the EU or globally they haven’t yet said. Obviously, charging a premium would simply harm their market.

It’s a great idea from the EU that will save a whole lot of tech waste.

Apple has long been fleecing its consumers with the necessity of dedicated Apple products.

pointythings · 20/11/2022 14:28

@Mirabai Apple's nasty habit of tying its customers in to its products with no cheaper alternatives available is one of the reasons why I use Android.

SerendipityJane · 20/11/2022 15:02

Those of us with some age will notice the signs - much like the Truss U turn and subsequent defenestration, events are moving and The UK is going to end up in some sort of customs union (i.e. the customs union with "UK" inserted before the title) before the end of 2023. The denials are now sounding like the US "red wave" predictions. Especially as some Tories have decided they are the party of Brexit.

I'm certainly not going to gloat over it. But then Brexiteers are hardly happy campers as it is.

SerendipityJane · 20/11/2022 15:48

But if you did want a laugh

www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/watch-the-hilarious-moment-a-gb-news-presenter-realises-their-own-brexit-poll-has-gone-against-them-339116/

If GB News viewers are turning against Brexit, then it really is dead in the water.

Also isn't this usually the bit where Farage reappears ?

Mirabai · 20/11/2022 16:09

There’s not much to gloat over sadly.

I agree these reports are preparing the country for the unthinkable. It’s a tacit acknowledgement that Brexit has fucked trade and that the general economic situation is now so dire that growth is fundamental.

How will the Tories respond: a. reluctant acceptance from the headbangers with constant bellyaching; or b. division, revolt & meltdown?

Pre Truss I would have said b. Post Truss I think a. is possible. The Tories stared into the abyss of actual financial meltdown, they know they’re in the last chance saloon.

DuncinToffee · 20/11/2022 17:05

I think Louise comes to this thread when she has a crisis of faith Wink

SerendipityJane · 20/11/2022 17:25

"Gloaters ? You really are a prat aren't you Percy ?"

Given how deep and lasting the damage done to the UK has been, you really need to find the funny, or you'd be firebombombing everywhere.

However, Brexit is toast. There will be no more movement away from the EU, and a fuck of a lot back to it. The word apogee springs to mind. Particularly apt if you view politics as the sum of a series of orbits, like an orrery for the world.

So it's quite nice of Louise to pop back and repeat their ever-receding wishlist. Because that's all it ever was.

HappyWinter · 20/11/2022 17:34

It does feel like there's been a change in the air, especially since the OBR report.
