Part 10 of our long running thread.

Not sure what to say, really, other than it is worse than I feared.

Strap in, folks. It's gonna be a rough ride...

Before I left for work this morning we were talking about whether the lettuce would last longer than Liz, turned out it did.

I didn't know anything until I turned on the radio in the car on the way home.

Unrelated to the excitement in Westminster but one or two of you might be interested in this website app.electricitymaps.com
A realtime live map of Europe showing which way electricity is flowing between countries. Very 'Nerdy' but some might be interested. The far flung bits of Scotland being 100% renewable can feel very virtuous. Shetland data is unavailable this evening because the communications cable (internet and phones etc) was broken earlier today. Each countries production is shown and the percentages of renewable and carbon emissions. France and Germany have signed an agreement for gas and electricity exchanges to help each other over the winter.

Apparently, Liz Truss' premiership was the same duration as the gestation period of a squirrel 🐿🐿🐿 How appropriate! Halloween Grin

ILeclercreturn · 21/10/2022 09:35

Without wishing to summon the devil I see a connection with Liz ((cut and paste trade agreements) Truss and another squirrel closer to MN.
I enjoyed the Germans dealing with protestors who glued themselves to the floor in a Porche showroom. the employees and security just turned off the lights and heating and left them there with no food or bathroom facilities. Police and medics popped round t arrest them in the morning. They were supposedly scientists but now with a criminal record of some sort that will mess up their CVs.

If Clav was Truss, an awful lot would be explained.

I’m watching the news and feel utter despair at quite a few of a) Tory members (one who didn’t like Rishi because he’ll bring in high taxes 🙄) and b) the ‘man on the street’ who wants Johnson back because he ‘won a stonking majority’ and they disregard all his lying.

And I despair at the thought of Mordant as PM. She’d be worse than Truss because going by her past performance she’s just as equally mendacious and irresponsible but more able to don a mask of faux gravitas.

Jesus what a mess.

Yeah.
Despair is about right.
I'd LOVE to think that as per Sam coates that 40 tory mps are ready tonwuit/cross the floor. But they won't.
I can only assume those people happy for De Pfeffle to return didn't hsve to bury a loved one during lockdown, nor put a loved on in the back of an ambulance not knowing if you'll see them again.
I will never forget.
I will never forgive.

quiteathome · 21/10/2022 20:20

I will also never forget and never forgive.

As it stands I don't get a say unless there is a GE. I don't remember a time when it was quite so shambolic

DrBlackbird · 21/10/2022 20:28

So many people calling for a GE… even some Tory party members. At this point, that is the only right thing to do. But when do Tories ever do the right thing by the nation. I’m so fed up with the lot.

GreatHonkingPudding · 21/10/2022 23:32

It's delusional to think Boris Johnson will be good for either party or country, but we're at their mercy so we have to watch them burn it all down a bit longer.

This is rather amusing...

ILeclercreturn · 22/10/2022 08:00

Good find HannibalHeyes.
Although it is too soon to say, the progress of a 'proposed' mega Chinese Embassy, taking over the old Royal Mint building is a bit interesting. It has opposition at the moment but it would be instructive to see who and when overturns the opposition to it. It would be the largest in Europe, with my obvious thought that in 'political' terms the UK is not in Europe any more. So what 'diplomatic' functions would it be for? The Russian (?) Embassy in Ireland was a bit of a 'scandal' last year when the extent of the building works was revealed.
Moody's downgrade is going to sting a bit although less obvious than the clown show, it will erode and chances of growth in the UK.

GreatHonkingPudding · 22/10/2022 09:04

Still, we've found a benefit of Brexit.

  1. Destroyed The Conservative Party.
Tanith · 22/10/2022 20:21

From the way the Johnson camp are talking, I get the impression that the whole Truss debacle was planned to last longer. Johnson would sit well out of the way while she made a pig's ear of everything, then he would come back like a knight in shining armour and save the day.

I don't think they realised how inept she really was and they didn't expect her to screw it all up so quickly and so spectacularly. Like that Italian Job "You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!!" scene.
They're having to make the best of a bad job, even though it may be too early for Johnson to act the saviour, as he'd hoped, and the script they're following seems out of kilter.

HannibalHeyes · 22/10/2022 21:41

30p Lee has come out in favour of BoJo...

What are the rules behind recall petitions? Is it just a proportion of the electorate?

Surely initiating 50 or so petitions in seats where polls are showing sufficient swing ought to be enough to eject enough mps to wipe out the accursed majority thats keeping these clowns in place.

prettybird · 22/10/2022 23:31

Recall petitions can't just be called because people are unhappy with their MP. They can only be set up if the MP has been found guilty of certain wrongdoings: suspended from parliament for more than a certain number of days (can't remember how many) or sentenced to prison for under a year (over a year means immediate disqualification).

I think the constituents then get 6 weeks to sign it and if more than 10% of the electorate sign it, a by-election is called. However the MP can stand again if they feel that despite the recall petition succeeding, they can still win.

quiteathome · 23/10/2022 07:08

My MP has come out in favour of Sunak

Peregrina · 23/10/2022 09:31

When I was reading the paper last night, it said that neither Johnson nor Sunak had yet said that they were standing. Has that changed?

DuncinToffee · 23/10/2022 10:19

No, only Mordaunt has declared she is standing.

RafaistheKingofClay · 23/10/2022 10:29

Brian Bilston on form, as ever.
