The 'smooth' exit from transition now leads to a million and one little things that you can't get hold of or took completely for granted.

Why is sainsbury in NI selling spa milk? Why can't you get hold of your favourite food stuff?

Its a slow strangulation of the country.

In which you get to learn all about the merits of the EU and what a donkey Johnson really is.

To be fair, a lot of businesses did warn that Brexit would be difficult for them e.g. the freight forwarding business. But the clowns in Government whose expertise is getting a 1st in PPE from Oxford, or a 2nd in Classics in Johnson's case, were not prepared to listen.

As for the DUP - what can be said? Why did they Trust Johnson?

Yep lots of industry bodies were complaining the government weren't listening to their concerns.

If the DUP can be coaxed into saying why they want it suspended - and explain why they voted for it it might not be such a bad thing.

However personally I think the best thing is the clear sign of ardent Brexiteers who are going to be told to STFU. As that will be a good signal to fishermen, farmers, Cornwall, the red wall, Walsall and all that you ain't getting shit from Brexit. Or rather you're only going to get shit from Brexit.

So far, so predictable...🙄

SabrinaThwaite · 08/01/2021 11:08

Talking of “experts”... from Twitter:

JohnShirleyLtd @JohnShirleyLtd

So the chaos has begun. Organising even the simplest load to Europe has become an almost impossible task due to the mountain of Tory red tape that was brought in on the 1st of January.

Interesting replies too:

@grantshapps is talking nonsense then. I have inbound loads from Germany stuck in Dover right now due to 'paperwork' problems. The advice from govt has amounted to 'go hire experts'. We did, any they are no better informed how to navigate the Catch-22s than a govt minister.

We have just shipped, took three people three days to get the paperwork in order. It may get better with time, but it is a ball-achingly huge waste of effort.

We’ve changed carrier 3 times because each time we get a carrier, they change their mind on wanting the hassle.

@borntobequiet

Fishing is huge in sporting terms. But I think I’ve posted before that once in school when the focus was on “celebrating achievement” and I put forward one of my tutor group for an award for winning numerous angling competitions, I was told that fishing didn’t really count. Team sports, athletics, rowing, archery - fine. Fishing apparently was just a leisure activity (and one rather popular with boys who weren’t too fond of school). As I walked my dog for miles along the river and the canal towpath I encountered many of our fishermen and had numerous pleasant conversations with them - so they never gave me any trouble in class.
I once had an embarrassing (for him) exchange with my sons PE teacher , I made sure I made my point strikingly and loudly as there were other parents around. My son has dyspraxia- so things like foot ball and rugby are hard. PE teacher said - in front of my son 🤬"I know he's no good at sport" at which point I said he's an amazing rider - dressage and showjumping, he is also an amazing shot- claybird and rifle - all of which are Olympic sports ..... how many Olympic sports do you offer at the school?" That shut him up very quickly. I HATE that at school only certain sports count and that excludes many children.....

Anyway - so for the derail..... as you were...

Brexiters continue to excel themselves. Now where are the posters to tell me that no Brexiters were racist?

This in combination with Covid will tip a lot of SMEs over the edge :-( .

In fairness, the DUP did vote against the WA and the deal. Thad said, they did campaign for brexit in the first place because they rather naively assumed the union was important to the Conservative and Unionist Party who would help them to undermine the GFA in order to keep the union intact.

I particularly like this bit: A government spokesman acknowledged that there had been "some issues", but said ministers had always been clear there would be some disruption at the end of the transition period.

I seem to remember a totally different message earlier on in the game.

DGRossetti · 08/01/2021 11:58

Ah, something misremembered than. Thanks for nudging me back to reality.

Events elsewhere must have seemed like a godsend to Brexiteers - clearly pushing a lot of bad new under the fold. Although President Biden taking office as Northern Ireland is sinking under Brexit might not be the best start Boris could have arranged.

Ah, something misremembered than.

A very simple way to remember with the DUP is to ask yourself what is their answer to everything. It's "Ulster says NO".

That does completely ignore the fact that if you actually asked Ulster, which consists of 9 counties, 3 of which are in the Republic, the answer would probably be Yes.

Their geographical knowledge is somewhat lacking. They could form a support group with Raab.

Clavinova has already been on with this argument.

Easiest deals in history, done in an afternoon over a cup of tea, as I recall.

Ah, the ever selective c'n'p Clav, eh ?

I bet they don't trawl back to c'n'p the warnings about disruption due to brexit that were posted by Remainers previously. Because they sure as hell ain't gonna find any from the government.

Nigel Dodds and other DUP members had a meeting with Boris and Raab prior to the WA vote. They came out saying “they are not really Unionists’, (which is true - May was but they are not). Boris did not assure them that he would maintain regulatory alignment NI/rUK after Brexit. That’s what lost May the DUP vote.
OchonAgusOchonO · 08/01/2021 12:50

Boris did not assure them that he would maintain regulatory alignment NI/rUK after Brexit.

Did Johnson not claim multiple times there would be no border in the Irish sea and that there "unfettered access" to GB from NI? I believe his "dead body" was mentioned www.irishnews.com/news/northernirelandnews/2020/12/10/news/the-story-of-the-irish-sea-border-in-six-quotes-2155761/

HannibalHayes · 08/01/2021 12:57

He also claimed that "No UK prime minster could ever agree to" a border in the Irish Sea.

One wonders quite how he regards himself...

Was that not Theresa May?

Theresa May famously told the British Parliament that "no UK prime minister could ever agree" to a border in the Irish Sea.

Boris Johnson later told a Democratic Unionist Party conference that "no British Conservative government could or should sign up to any such arrangement".
