Westministenders: Where's my milk and cheese?

The 'smooth' exit from transition now leads to a million and one little things that you can't get hold of or took completely for granted.

Why is sainsbury in NI selling spa milk? Why can't you get hold of your favourite food stuff?

Its a slow strangulation of the country.

In which you get to learn all about the merits of the EU and what a donkey Johnson really is.

May sounded a warning over the future of the Union, adding: “The United Kingdom has a seat on the Security Council of the United Nations. I doubt that England would have a seat on the Security Council of the United Nations.”

That’s a... very strong reality check.

Theresa May was someone I could disagree with but respect. I only wish she had shown that sort of sense and mettle while considering when to trigger article 50!

HilaryThorpe · 13/01/2021 19:17

It is depressing isn't it Mistigri. I have always asked for actual data and hard evidence about how many British in Europe live under the radar / have no health cover / voted for Brexit, but answer came there none.
It does frequently come across as ageism I'm afraid.

Peregrina · 13/01/2021 19:27

I only wish she had shown that sort of sense and mettle while considering when to trigger article 50!

Absolutely yes. If she had the guts to say that the vote was close, so she would examine the options... But Johnson, Rees-Mogg and the ERG would have continued to undermine her. We have to hope now that since this shit show is theirs that they eventually destroy themselves. If the UK breaks up, I would certainly be happy to see them get the blame and go down in history for that.

Mistigri · 13/01/2021 19:30

By definition none of the a British in Europe live under the radar any more, or they can't be British in Europe - they'll be tourists.

There were a lot of older (retired) people living several months a year in Europe, perfectly legally. I know some who came here permanently last year to beat the Brexit deadline.

Still don't know any who voted for this.

Those Brexiters on the costas segments were carefully curated by broadcasters. They never bothered asking any of the hundreds of thousands of Britons who are permanent residents and fully integrated.

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 13/01/2021 19:38

Are you suggesting that it’s just possible that narrative is deliberately, erm, encouraged? For what purpose, do you think it’s just media mindlessly sensationalising to sell copy, or something a bit more politically emphatic?

HilaryThorpe · 13/01/2021 19:39

It would also be interesting to know how many S1 forms are currently issued to to UK migrants. This would tell us how many people of state pension age are living legally in their country without being a financial burden on the health service. That might clear up a few misconceptions.

HilaryThorpe · 13/01/2021 19:41

For the papers I think it is a mixture of ageism and a cheap story. I have to say that as a migrant pensioner I often feel like part of a group that everyone loves to hate.

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 13/01/2021 19:59

It’s worth remembering, thanks. There seems to be far too many of these divisions in use in the media. It’s difficult sometimes to ascribe it to profiteering and laziness rather than deliberate malice.

SwedishEdith · 13/01/2021 20:00

This estimates 800k to 1m Brits are 2nd home owners in Spain Shock. So, these will be most impacted if they use it for themselves (and, yes, that's true, there's a difference between settled migrants and sunbirds).

borntobequiet · 13/01/2021 20:26

From DGR’s link re TM’s remarks (coherent and sensible) I notice that Liz Truss sounds as flat and uninspiring in quotation as she does in real life.

ListeningQuietly · 13/01/2021 20:26

ALL Estimates by one Government of the numbers of settled migrants in their country are BOLLOCKS

I remember when Theresa May abolished ILR in the UK and the Home Office estimated that there were 100,000 Americans here
Until "Democrats Abroad" confirmed that their mailing list was bigger than that.

Oh, how very Tory.

Brexit: Fisheries minister did not read deal as she was ‘very busy organising local Nativity trail’

Fisheries minister too busy with Christmas to read the deal with the EU which has caused enormous problems for the fishing industry. Compared to the Johnson government Chris Grayling was clearly an over-achiever

Although to be fair to Boris Johnson he did say he would “f* business” which may be the one and only promise he has ever actually managed to ensure is happening

borntobequiet · 13/01/2021 20:45

I did wonder if replacing Gavin Williamson with Chris Grayling might improve things a bit for schools.

HannibalHayes · 13/01/2021 21:24

Oh, Jesus wept!

Just when you think the Tories have sunk as low as possible, here comes Shaun Bailey (London Mayoral candidate) to show just how much lower they can sink.

We’re a medium sized haulage contractor exporting from NI to GB & Europe since the early ‘80’s. This screenshot is of our trucks current positioning.... EU loads have gone a bit quiet...

Logistics twitter is very good on this. The big problem is that haulage is circular. You want your lorry full in both directions, and you don't want it stuck (empty or full) in the U.K. due to Brexit. If you can't get in and out fast enough you won't come at all.

I don't think people understand yet how serious this is. The newspapers are focussing on the exporters who have been fucked over by Brexit - mainly fishermen, and U.K. retailers who can't get product to NI and EU stores without falling foul of rules of origin - but the government is more worried about imports right now.

Basically govt doesn't care about small fishing businesses (especially if they are Scottish) but it does care very much about empty supermarket shelves in England and is now starting to mobilise to prevent this. Not sure they can move fast or far enough though.

RTB
I find that image really really sad

In my day
we had T cards on the wall
with the country that each of the trucks was in
sorted by direction
and load type

That image is the equivalent of having the decorations put away till December Sad

You get the feeling that the Army are going to be very stretched - helping with the vaccine roll out and helping with the logistics of getting food to the shops.

Indeed.

I find it extraordinary that 'get the army in' seems to be the default line atm to everything where we've fucked up planning.

I agree. I don't think people have a clue. One thing happening at the moment is the shops are all closed. People are kind of accepting of things not being available atm cos of covid.

Unless you are in NI or paying attention I don't think a lot of people are noticing the little things yet.

And they haven't started to lose jobs yet.

I saw a comment earler today saying that the government could blame how Brexit had gone so far on Remainers. Until the deal was signed and transition ended.

Now its very much all on Johnson. How does he deflect now? And on whom?

There will be fall out. Its like bleeding to death slowly rather than a bullet in your brain.

OP posts:
Peregrina · 13/01/2021 22:06

And on whom? Easy question to answer: The EU, The Frogs, The Krauts, the SNP. You only have to look at the 'What have we gained thread' to see what the Johnson groupies think.

So far bonus are - you can break the speed limits in France and you will probably get away with it. He did a good job organising the Olympic torch. The vaccine roll out appears to be going OK - but how much of that is Brexit related?

We have begun to notice that things are starting to disappear from the supermarkets - little things like not much washing powder. I haven't seen a run on loo rolls yet.

Peregrina · 13/01/2021 22:27

Has anyone got a link for the Schenker news: I can only find generic, this is what Schenker does type links.

StickWaver · 13/01/2021 22:37

Ah, we need to do some Schenkerian analysis..

Sorry, couldn't resist
