Westministenders: Where's my milk and cheese?

The 'smooth' exit from transition now leads to a million and one little things that you can't get hold of or took completely for granted.

Why is sainsbury in NI selling spa milk? Why can't you get hold of your favourite food stuff?

Its a slow strangulation of the country.

In which you get to learn all about the merits of the EU and what a donkey Johnson really is.

@SabrinaThwaite

She’d award the contract to her mates though.
Imagine a Tory gallows built to the same exacting standards as their Track and Trace system ? Everyone would be pushing each other out of the way in a bid to go for the drop knowing it will be the least effective noose ever tied to a pole.
DGRossetti · 12/01/2021 14:41

Really impressed by the new blue passport design. I can see why it was worth trashing the country for.

And OK, so we're no longer in the EU. But it does show that England and France can still be friends, partners and work together.

So ... £350 million a week less 7 is £343 million a week.

www.politicshome.com/news/article/scottish-fish-traders-say-brexit-is-costing-them-over-1m-a-day-and-want-the-government-to-pay-them-back

The government is being urged to compensate businesses whose exports to the European Union have been torpedoed by post-Brexit paperwork.

One major trade association told PoliticsHome that the Scottish seafood sector alone was losing over one million pounds a day.

Peregrina · 12/01/2021 15:00

The question is, did Scottish fishermen vote Leave in the same numbers as English ones?

Peterhead and Fraserburgh fishermen mostly voted Leave.
Peregrina · 12/01/2021 17:36

In which case they need to make the best of it.
It's no good whining that Johnson has let them down. They knew when he fronted the Leave campaign that he was a liar and a cheat, although he wasn't PM then.

Brexit: Five surprising consequences

Fuck off BBC. Fuck you and your toadying up to the Tories. None of those 5 things can be "surprising" if they were widely discussed for four fucking years after the referendum.

Mistigri · 12/01/2021 18:01

Personally although I am all in favour of leavers taking personal responsibility, but I think we need to show some empathy. Regardless of which way the business owners voted, they have employees who voted differently, children who couldn't vote etc. And in small towns, one business failing can have a huge impact on the local economy.

I have less sympathy for large business owners who didn't prepare, but small business owners were lied to about complex issues and, crucially, they probably couldn't have done much to prepare anyway. A lot of the problem for small fishing businesses is that groupage has become unworkable, and there is no way a small business could have mitigated against that.

It appeared that Priti has had some elocution lessons...... it did start to slip - but she has definitely changed the way she talks

Given the history of some of the larger Peterhead companies, my sympathy is definitely limited.

Peregrina · 12/01/2021 18:45

My sympathy is definitely limited as far as those who voted Tory in 2019 are concerned. They got what they voted for.

She still needs a big bag of Gs.

From the bit I heard, I thought that she must have a sign in front of her saying "Remember to pronounce the g".

I presume this has been posted

The last few weeks have seen a frenetic period of adjustment, and change, with people leaving Spain for good, and others replacing them before the rules for residency changed.

"Our removal companies have never been busier. Every removal company across this coast has told our team they've never seen a situation like this," says Michel Euesden from Rochdale. She runs the Euro Weekly newspaper in Fuengirola, a paper that provides news for Brits living here.

"It's the first time in 25 years since we started the paper here that we've seen removal companies fully booked going out and coming back in.

"They are taking the elderly and people who haven't had jobs for a while, because of the Covid situation, back to the UK, and then they're bringing back younger generations with disposable income, and often with an online marketing presence (so who pay tax), out here. So the dynamics have completely changed."

Big win for Spain.

Banff and Buchan was one of the two Scottish constituencies to vote Leave, and it returns a Scottish Tory MP (but an SNP MSP).
Mistigri · 12/01/2021 19:06

It's not just in Scotland that there have been impacts. Next casualty will be the Welsh ferry ports. Some crossings have been cancelled and now a ferry has been diverted from the Holyhead crossing to serve a direct route to France.

Whenwillow · 12/01/2021 19:52

Is this only happening in Spain? Is it just that the headlines are currently focusing there? If it's happening there can we assume it will affect ex past in other countries?
Or is Spain notable because people tend to go there to retire, unlike, say, Czech Republic or Poland?

Whenwillow · 12/01/2021 19:53

Sorry questions questions! You lot are more clued up than me.

AuldAlliance · 12/01/2021 20:31

In short, yes.
Lots of people moved there on retirement, a bit too late to learn the language well had they wanted to, bought up cheap property esp after the financial crash, spent winters in the sun (not sth you do in the Czech Republic or Poland) and bobbed back and forth between Spain and the UK. The number of UK subjects living in Spain is considerable, whereas the numbers in Central and Eastern Europe are fairly low.

Perhaps she can now afford it as her husband is now in charge as advisor to Boris Johnson on ministerial code since November 2020? But u can't make a lamb out of mutton as it showed.

TatianaBis · 12/01/2021 23:16

Many people in my area complaining about their Sainsbury’s deliveries being cancelled.

Seems to be combination of Covid and Brexit. Some delivery drivers have Covid and are thus isolating, but equally Sainsbury’s warned on their site that some food will be unobtainable.

www.itv.com/news/border/2021-01-12/major-seafood-company-more-or-less-finished-by-brexit
Major seafood company 'more or less finished' by Brexit

The head of a major seafood company in the Scottish Borders says Brexit has "more or less finished" his business.

DR Collin is the biggest employer in Eyemouth, with around 200 workers. James Cook, the firm's Managing Director, says since the Brexit transition period ended they have been unable to export fresh shellfish to the EU, the company's main market.

The problem is the mountain of paperwork seafood exporters have to complete, ranging from obtaining health certificates (each one can take hours per shipment), to completing customs documents.

Much of this paperwork is new, and as full details of the UK's Brexit trade deal with the EU were only published hours before the deadline, companies say they haven't had time to prepare.
