The 'smooth' exit from transition now leads to a million and one little things that you can't get hold of or took completely for granted.

Why is sainsbury in NI selling spa milk? Why can't you get hold of your favourite food stuff?

Its a slow strangulation of the country.

In which you get to learn all about the merits of the EU and what a donkey Johnson really is.

www.theguardian.com/education/2021/jan/12/not-good-enough-marcus-rashford-condemns-free-school-meal-packages

Chartwells, the company which she said provided the parcel meant to last for 10 days, said they would investigate. They said: “Thank you for bringing this to our attention, this does not reflect the specification of one of our hampers.”

Sir Keir Starmer described the situation as “a disgrace”. The Labour leader tweeted: “The images appearing online of woefully inadequate free school meal parcels are a disgrace. Where is the money going? This needs sorting immediately so families don’t go hungry through lockdown.”

the local government minister, Simon Clarke, who voted against giving vouchers to help feed children during the school holidays citing the billions the government had put into the welfare system during the pandemic, appeared to accuse the England star of “seeking to whip a storm up on Twitter”.

schimmelreiter · 12/01/2021 09:26

Chartwells do school catering, so maybe the food parcels will be able to use some of the food that was going to be thrown away when schools shut and cancelled orders/ the wholesalers can supply content and not go bust? Obviously the food needs to be fit for purpose in terms of quantity/ quality.

The thing about 'losing' 6 billion in daily trades is that it is daily

After the initial story this will be out of the headlines - but that daily trading will still be lost to London. The impact is the loss of charges/transaction fees. The trading in swaps is still migrating so the 'loss' will only grow.

What's the betting that if (because I suspect no minister wants to go near this) if the BBC can find a government spokesperson, they will just lie to the country and say that the Dutch "must have made a mistake" and simply peddle that line for the next 45 years ? After all, they're talking to a nation convinced of bendy bananas etc etc.

Plenty of poor people to tax, don't worry. We can also scrap a few benefits and look at what the state provides and stop that too.

I suspect that the ham and cheese in the sandwiches currently meets the EU regulations, but since Johnson's Tories are making it clear that they want to diverge from EU standards as soon as possible, then the Dutch are beginning as they will need to go on.

I can't see why Brexiters need to complain - Johnson and cronies are trying to write all references to the EU out of our laws - so they should welcome any demonstration of divergence from the Dutch.

A BBC report about how Britons on the Costas are being affected.

I wonder how the shipyard worker who is now restricted in visiting his retirement home in Spain voted. We can't assume he voted Leave because Newcastle on Tyne narrowly voted Remain, although the statement about being let down implies that he might have been a leave voter.

Peregrina · 12/01/2021 10:29

Nor is Brexit done, or not as far as the island of Ireland is concerned.

DGRossetti · 12/01/2021 10:29

That's irrelevant now. He won't see any change before he dies.

Much more interesting (and fair play to the BBC here) was the overnight shift in demographics:

In total, there are now more than 360,000 British residents registered in Spain, according to official Spanish figures. Back in the offices of Euro Weekly, Michel Euesden predicts there will be a dramatic change to the population dynamic.

"We have traditionally been a community here of expats who are on average 50-plus. Last year it changed, and the average age was 45. If you come over in 12 months, it'll be more like an average age of 35.

"If you're 70 or 80 years old and you don't understand this new system, the new paperwork, the driving licences needing to be switched over, say for example they get ill - what are they going to do? I think a lot of people will go back to the country where they speak the language. You no longer have the best of both worlds, and people can't rely on speaking only English to get by.

"They will be replaced by a younger set of people who can afford to be here."

(contd)

"younger" or "richer" ?

borntobequiet · 12/01/2021 11:29

I think I remember this very scenario being predicted on these threads (literally) years ago? That Brexit would result in the UK being inundated with distressed elderly ex-expats while anyone with sufficient funds and the ability to work from anywhere would leg it? Talk about new beginnings.

TheABC · 12/01/2021 11:42

The Costas report does not surprise me and this will become a recurring theme. After all, if you are not tied down by a mortgage and you have a job (or business) that allows remote work, why would you not look for a better climate?

Covid-19 has also massively increased the number of affluent workers who can do so, remotely. From a Spanish viewpoint, it's a win-win. Their population is decreasing (low birth-rate/high longevity), so young adults that bring their jobs with them are welcome.

TheABC · 12/01/2021 11:43

Heck, if it were not for the school-age kids, myself and DH would be looking at that scenario, this year.

Peregrina · 12/01/2021 11:52

We might hope that the younger Britons who go there might be more minded to learn Spanish and integrate more with the local communities. So the loss of the Little Englanders is potentially a win for Spain.
