Westministenders: Where's my milk and cheese?

The 'smooth' exit from transition now leads to a million and one little things that you can't get hold of or took completely for granted.

Why is sainsbury in NI selling spa milk? Why can't you get hold of your favourite food stuff?

Its a slow strangulation of the country.

In which you get to learn all about the merits of the EU and what a donkey Johnson really is.

It's up to the Brexiters now to make the country 'Prosper mightily' starting now, not when our grandchildren have grandchildren of their own.

What's already happening is Brexiteers are scuttling away ready to blame the last man standing ...

Peregrina · 11/01/2021 16:46

It's utter madness: the Brexiters who whinged about not wanting closer union or an EU army, but wanting to go back to how they thought the EEC was, which was primarily about trade, have gone and potentially crippled trade with all the red tape which is now necessary.

I'm wondering if our local fishmonger will be any cheaper Wink

We usually get scallops for our Burns Supper (not that we can have anyone over for it Wink except my dad ). I wonder if they'll be cheaper this year.

D'you think maybe the sunlit uplands are a wee bit overcast because it's not the summer, or is something else afoot?

Pretty certain that was rubbished as "Project Fear" too.

Is anyone keeping a spreadsheet of all this. Maybe a lockdown job for me, as the market seems rather disinterested ... a table of story, number of times it was dismissed as "Project Fear" multiplied by differing sources and a final column of hours before it happened after 23:00 31/12/2020 ....

I'd be curious to see if higher scored stories happened quicker ....

I presume that the dairy/meat products ban also applies coming into the UK.

After the 1st 6 months of UK customs officials waiving things through, that would mean no more bringing home cheese, saucissons or pate from holidays in EU countries Shock not that we can go on holiday at the moment

That will hurt a certain group of entitled Brexiters Hmm

It will hurt us too (I'm partial to Epoisses and to saucissons from the local market) - but at least we can say we did t vote for it Grin

Dunno. What's our environmental policy ?

Peregrina · 11/01/2021 17:25

There is no reason why it should - we can make our own laws, don't forget.

Another vote for Farming Today.Grin

Re Starmer. I would not be surprised if a substantial proportion of the voting population think he's some kind of aristocrat, because of the knighthood.

That speech was carried on PM too, but I am not the demographic they need to be targetting.

Absence of critical thinking, successive failure of education policy by both parties ( I have controversial views on the wholesale expansion of university education) and the dominance of social media mean people will believe the most utter contorted nonsense.

@redcandlelight

I'm not a farmer, but find the programme very interesting wrt everything (food production, red tape, environment, animal welfare...)

plus it's the perfect length for my morning cuppa.

It’s the accompaniment to my morning exercises and I learn so much from it. The reporters/presenters/interviewers are the best on Radio 4, way better than many of the self-important showoffs who blight the “proper” news programmes (magazines really).
Peregrina · 11/01/2021 19:04

The Labour party is nothing like as good as they would like to think they are on Education - starting with the 1944 Act, which brought in Secondary Education for all, and in the process spawned the detested Secondary Modern Schools. Although from what I remember from reading the act years ago, they weren't mentioned - it was just how LEAs chose to implement the rules.

This is not to say that all Sec Mods were bad - some were good. Some grammar schools (like mine) were nothing like as good as they thought they were.

Peregrina · 11/01/2021 19:06

Warming to my theme of how Labour isn't quite as good on education as they would like to thing - there was a very good report on 14-19 Education back in 2005 or so, the Tomlinson Report. Blair dismissed its findings in order to preserve the 'Gold Standard' of A levels. This was truly an opportunity missed.

www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-11/city-of-london-s-plight-laid-bare-as-hopes-for-brexit-deal-fade

Just over a week in, the City of London is coming to a hardening realization about its post-Brexit future: a financial services accord with the European Union may be too little, too late to protect its dominant position.

Negotiations are set to kick off soon to determine the outlines of regulatory co-operation between the U.K. and EU, after the industry was largely sidelined in the trade deal that marked Britain’s split from the EU on Dec. 31. A March deadline has been set and so far details including who will head up the discussions are scarce.

The early days of Brexit have laid bare the stakes: London lost 6.3 billion euros ($7.7 billion) in daily stock trades to EU venues on Jan. 4, the first business day after the transition period. The overnight loss added impetus to calls by financial firms and London’s stock exchange to policy makers to ease rules and help the City get a competitive edge over European rivals.

One such move emerged over the weekend, with the U.K. Treasury saying it plans to allow trading in Swiss shares, reversing an EU ban on the activity. London’s ability to offer trading in firms like Nestle SA and Roche Holding AG will help compensate for some of the loss in EU shares. But the stance also deepens the U.K.’s division with the EU, making the bloc less likely to offer market access.

Peregrina · 11/01/2021 19:13

I can't read that article without subscribing, but I wondered where Nestle and Roche are traded at present. Will London offer enough for them to move?

Peregrina · 11/01/2021 19:19

The above just gives me the feeling that they (Johnson's Government) are floundering in a panic.

HannibalHayes · 11/01/2021 19:24

Apparently we can still import food from the EU (up to a value of €430).

But we're the ones suggesting we might lower our food standards, so I can't say I have no sympathy...

Pretty sure the government’s strategy now is to let us run out of food. Then when prices go up we won’t care, because we have actual food

Offs.

Just ask the Swiss how much their financial services enjoy lack of single market access. They’ve been negotiating with the EU for SM for financial services for over 10 years.

The city has been completely fucked over - or was it just forgotten about?

The city will spend spend the next 10 years (or however long it takes to give up and go back) chasing equivalence - a pia due to fast-changing nature of financial regulations which have to be renegotiated.

We will be implementing or mirroring rules we don't like in order to remain equivalent. And unlike passporting - equivalence can be revoked. Which is no basis for long term investment decisions.

Well that would mirror the deal scenario.

First we were going to get a great deal, then we almost ran out of time to get a deal - now everyone is just grateful we have an actual deal.

TheABC · 11/01/2021 20:58

I suspect a certain class of brexiteer will enjoy the panic in London's trading companies.

Perhaps "levelling up" just means screwing everyone over, to an equal degree?

HannibalHayes · 11/01/2021 21:18

Jesus wept. What the government is now doing with the replacement for free school meals. Instead of the £30 voucher which was obviously being spent on brothels and gambling they are now getting someone or other to send out boxes of food which are supposed to last 2 weeks, and which, frankly, would cost less than a fiver at Aldi. Which of the government's latest cronies is creaming off £25 for each one of these boxes?

It makes me livid!

Peregrina · 11/01/2021 21:21

But meanwhile Clavinova is getting excited about the UK giving up sovereignty to countries literally on the other side of the world.
