OP posts:

As someone who runs a business with imports and exports across the EU- this is great news! Didn't think he'd manage it.

sergeilavrov · 24/12/2020 17:31

@Pepperwort Unfortunately there are specific security vulnerabilities with the Galileo system that have led to significant issues over the past six months in particular. It becomes very difficult to maintain systems where there are multilateral interests in understanding the security components, with those secrets then held in states with varying cyber and human security - and with varying relationships with sources of potential hacks. They were offered a consultation with an Israeli company who could provide assistance in securing it (they obviously have an interest in keeping European exports and military safe), but this was declined. It was a disappointing end to two years of discussion on a potential solution.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 24/12/2020 17:32

Anyway, sounds fair re. A transition period of 5.5 years, gives U.K. time to build up it’s fishing fleet by 2026. Sounds good for fishing communities in the future?
If there’s any fish left by then.

Pepperwort · 24/12/2020 17:32

That data transfer omission is not good. So basically this is the emergency deal...?

Echobelly · 24/12/2020 17:36

This is a relief, but I will not display any gratitude to this government for gaining it. We had a working deal already - all we've done is throw away most of the benefits. I fail to see how this isn't going to create way more of the 'red tape' Johnson claims we are losing compared to actually being part of the EU. Very manipulative timing to conveniently give way on Christmas eve. I suppose we can thank Coronavirus for convincing opportunist Johnson to decide that right at this moment a deal would make him look better than none.

I am relieved we are at least not entering a new year panic and likely shortages, though it looks like we might have a bit of delay causes by the nonsense at the border.

But this whole thing has been such a damaging waste of money and energy for no good whatsoever for either side.

Echobelly · 24/12/2020 17:37

Also, screw fishing. It's not worth a fraction, nor employs anything like as many people as arts and culture, which will all lose huge amounts of support and employment opportunities due to the end of EU funding and free movement, on top of Coronavirus. Angry

Peregrina · 24/12/2020 17:46

It will be interesting to see how certain things go in five years time - will we have a thriving fishing industry encouraged by Government investment or was that Johnson noise?

Turing programme - will it be up and running? We need more details. Will it just be a programme for the 'Anglosphere'?

Ramifications for N Ireland and GFA? Scottish Independence? Still a lot of unknowns.

Anyway now Johnson has got a deal he can do a Cameron and bugger off whistling.

At least now you can talk to your clearance agents and get them sorting out your customs paperwork for every item going into and coming out of the EU.

Just have to hope that the drivers are willing to come after the shambles of this week.

I remain unconvinced.

HannibalHayes · 24/12/2020 18:10

Better than nothing. At least it's the start of us re-joining (although without all the perks we had before).

Deal!!!!!!!!
Deal!!!!!!!!
GetOffYourHighHorse · 24/12/2020 18:17

'Better than nothing. At least it's the start of us re-joining'

🙄

Peregrina · 24/12/2020 18:17

I think rejoining without all the perks in a few years time would be a good thing. We might finally take our place as willing partners wanting the best for the whole community and not whining, whining and whining for special deals.

How long does anyone think it will be before we start knocking on the door for at least an EEA type deal?

How much water will flow under the bridge - Scottish Independence, Irish re-unification?

HannibalHayes · 24/12/2020 18:20

Ooh! Someone needs to get off their high horse!

Kaliorphic · 24/12/2020 18:26

Christ, I was a remainer but after all this turmoil I wouldn't support rejoining. Not now. I think the UK will be fine.

happinessischocolate · 24/12/2020 18:28

@TheVanguardSix

I hate how we're supposed to be all 'yay! happy happy joy joy'. I feel so let down by politicians on either side of the Channel waiting until the eleventh-fucking-hour to do the fucking decent thing for citizens. All of this last-minute dot com-carrot-before-the-donkey bullshit's getting old. It's all shock and awe tactics and the, as we're laying there, face down in the sand emotionally, we're supposed to grovel with grace and gratitude like good little plebs." Oh thank you, Master. Thank you. I still worship you." Brexit is still a shit sandwich and I am unapologetic about my stance.

I'm also in a terrible mood today, so there. Grin Of course it's good news... but they're all assholes anyway.

Well said
GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 24/12/2020 18:28

I'm just glad we've got a deal. TBH I expected the wrangling to go into January.

The devil will be in the detail, though.

AethelsWhiteGoose · 24/12/2020 18:28

All those hailing Boris J, you do understand he supported vote leave because he thought it would help him into no.10 and not because he thought it was a good idea....
That man looks after himself and one one else.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 24/12/2020 18:32

I'm not hailing Bunglecunt Boris, make no mistake. I'm glad a deal has been cobbled together, but it's his bloody fault that we needed a deal.
QuantumJump · 24/12/2020 18:34

Deal! So relieved!

GetOffYourHighHorse · 24/12/2020 18:35

'All those hailing Boris J'

Honestly stop with the sour grapes! A no tariff/free trade deal is a brilliant outcome. I was only arguing last week with the handwringers on here that is was in the EUs interests as well as ours but noooo it was impossible apparently, some of the constant moaning was just ridiculous.

They've done it. I'm not 'hailing' anyone but I can certainly recognise a good result.

Peregrina · 24/12/2020 18:36

Christ, I was a remainer but after all this turmoil I wouldn't support rejoining. Not now. I think the UK will be fine.

But who exactly caused most of the turmoil? Why do you think the UK will be fine?

giletrouge · 24/12/2020 18:44

@BlackForestCake

Now the long campaign to rejoin begins.
Yes. With positivity, vigour and tirelessness. No let up. A la Farage.
ListeningQuietly · 24/12/2020 18:46

A no tariff/free trade deal is a brilliant outcome.
If you think it is a brilliant outcome you are in for rather a nasty shock.

Customs clearance is going to stuff up supply chains for ever
Services and reciprocal agreements are not included
Trust has been broken

This is just the start of the next phase.

HannibalHayes · 24/12/2020 18:49

Admit I am impressed that we have access to a similar deal to EHIC, and that we won't need international driving licenses apparently. I thought that would be beyond this government, but I'm pleasantly surprised.

MadameMinimes · 24/12/2020 18:52

Very relieved to have a deal. It’s better than no deal but obviously nothing like as good as the deal we had as a member state. If you’d told me in 2016 that this would be the final deal I would have been devastated and if they’d negotiated this deal before the referendum and then asked people to vote, I don’t believe people would have voted for it.
December 2020 me is bloody delighted though. I was starting to worry that we might not get it done in time. I never wanted to leave the EU, but am glad that we are doing it with at least some dignity.

SuperbGorgonzola · 24/12/2020 18:52

I hope we can move on now. I'm a remainer, but I didn't care about Europe as an issue before the referendum, and I would really, really like to talk about something else in the post covid future. So many important issues have been drowned out by this, and the row has allowed the Conservatives to charge ahead on this single issue. That's not good.

I'm relieved to have a deal, and I hope that business can now adapt, knowing what the state of play is. I disagree that we need to rejoin as soon as possible. I would like to see how we fare and then see about the way forward.
