I might try that. I got some carrots and pease in a tin today. Have a few fridge bits to use up next few days then plan to give the shepherd's pie a go. Or maybe just save it all for after the apocalypse.
Hmmm, I briefly considered putting a freezer in a bedroom, but it seemed just too extreme. We settled for 2 small uprights in the kitchen in the end.
DH is delighted because when I've had a fridge/freezer sort out we always eat better for a while (I come over all organised, which is not my natural state of being)

I fancy ice cream now!

Whenwillow · 16/12/2020 19:05

Also the spelling of peas seems to have escaped me 😂

MarshmallowManiac · 16/12/2020 19:45

Oh me too Whenwillow what flavour have you got? Yes it escapes me too sometimes but I blame autocorrect. Grin
Yes I think the only reason that I put it in her old bedroom was because it is downstairs and backed onto the garden (so was easy for the movement from the shed Grin Grin )It sometimes seems extreme for me too, but I feel we wouldn't have been in this position at all if we didn't have pratts in government. Sad

Whenwillow · 18/12/2020 13:12

Oh not me it was @FinallyHere who has the ice cream. Our stocks are more like survival rations.
I like the sound of a downstairs bedroom. My friend lives on a steep hill and their 'upstairs' is downstairs. Mine is a very traditional post war terrace.
I could have stocked up more, but I feel bonkers enough doing it at all. I think if I had young children I would have a lot more.
I may regret it but I have enough that if it's really bad we could survive on rations for a few months, and hopefully there will be supplies of some sort so it's just a question of avoiding the shops for a while.
Anyone else sort of willing January to come so we can see what transpires? I hate the uncertainty.

FinallyHere · 18/12/2020 15:12

Tubs of

  • vanilla
  • lemon sorbet
  • vanilla with a swirl of blackcurrant

The bottom drawer of the new freezer is now pretty much full of ice creme.

Good-oh

Whenwillow · 18/12/2020 15:26

Oooh that sounds wonderful

Whenwillow · 18/12/2020 15:26

It would just not last in this house. Breakfast dinner and tea!

MarshmallowManiac · 18/12/2020 16:53

Sorry Whenwillow I think I just went a bit wobbly thinking of the ice cream Grin

MarshmallowManiac · 18/12/2020 16:55

Have a nice cupboard in that downstairs bedroom too Whenwillow I live in a town house so everything is upside down. The up & down the stairs kill me though.

They sound lovely Finally, I especially like the sound of Vanilla & Blackcurrant.

Dontlickthetrolley · 18/12/2020 22:06

I've discovered a local company making ice cream so on Wednesday I'm having delivered, Dairy Milk, Biscoffi and Reindeer Poo (vanilla with chocolate brownie and edible glitter) 3 different flavours, not all mashed in to one 🤣all delivered by an Elf!!! Already have a tub of carte dor Salted Caramel in there too!

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 18/12/2020 23:17

We only have vanilla Swedish Glacé as the kids haven't got to ice cream on the milk ladder yet!

Thst sounds very festive @Dontlickthetrolley!
DH just came home with what was meant to be normal pre Christmas weekly shop, and he has included some treaty biscuits to go in the loft. He's a keeper! It's all getting so close now! Have we all seen the guardian link with a video of the lorries queuing on the M20?

Dontlickthetrolley · 19/12/2020 13:27

I've just booked a click and collect for 31st in the hope there may be something on the shelves 😱

BlackeyedSusan · 19/12/2020 15:13

I have slots booked on a whatever comes is a bonus basis.

God help us.

I need to get my head around being prepared mentally. I was really thrown by lockdown shopping chaos as it was still theory. I didn't go short then and we will have enough food now. I just need to get my head round the this is the time to use it not cooking quite the same way.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 19/12/2020 18:14

I'm buying long-lasting veg in bulk (carrots, brussels etc) while they're in plentiful stock for Christmas. Our shorter-lasting veg rolling stock is doing OK for now too. The camping fridge is full!

HappyWinter · 19/12/2020 21:06

My children would be very impressed with all that ice cream!

I've seen the video of the lorries (on brexit threads). Poor drivers. I'm hoping everything will be ok but it feels a bit more real now. Freezer is small but full, I've added some extra things over the last few months.

MarshmallowManiac · 19/12/2020 23:45

They sound amazing Dontlick

Yum that flavour sounds lovely Fluffy Do sprouts last a long time do you think?

Yes God help us Blackeyed, bought some snacks for my treat shelf today to take my mind off things. Grin

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 20/12/2020 07:19

Sprouts do last well, yes. Ours are outside under cover unlike the lurking pumpkins outside the back door with a cardboard lid over their box. I got 3 red cabbages yesterday too. Got to make the most of the 14p veg. 😁

indignatio · 20/12/2020 08:19

My sprouts are on sticks and standing in vases on the kitchen window cil. Part of the decorations

EveLe · 20/12/2020 09:36

So fed up with going back into lockdown 8 days early that I’ve just edited my Asda order for tomorrow to add 2 tubs of Mario’s ice cream! No idea where it’s going to fit though, so I’ll be playing freezer Tetris when it arrives.

I have a shop booked for 28th, was going to restock my fridge then with as much longer lasting veg as possible, but 48%’s seem to be suggesting we need to buy ASAP, so what will survive outside the fridge?

I have a veg storage bag for potatoes, and another of apples, that will be filled tomorrow. Will red cabbages or parsnips survive outside the fridge (just until at the Christmas dinner stuff is gone from fridge so a week or so?) There’s no heating in my kitchen so it’s usually fairly cold, was thinking I could fill the stock pots to keep them in the dark, will that help?

We live on a mountain, so get a lot of mice in the garden, so can’t really store anything edible in the shed unfortunately.

prettybird · 20/12/2020 09:52

I've ordered another 20kg of bread flour from Wessex Mill. My big flour bin (an IKEA dustbin) is still full of my previous order (about 5kg of bread flour and various other flours) so I'm going to have to find somewhere else to keep the box for the moment.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 20/12/2020 10:12

The contactless delivery for flour is fun as our porch is just a mass of box propping the door open!

We're just ordering more bread and plain flour too, so we have it in stock.

You might find parsnips go a bit floppy, Eve. Can you get a mouse-proof box for outside?

OP posts:
EveLe · 20/12/2020 10:27

Thanks Fluffy, that’s what I was worried about. Don’t think I can get a box - I’m in Wales, so in lockdown now and shops not allowed to sell non essentials. Could try ordering online, but still waiting on parcels posted 10 days ago so unlikely to arrive in time.

I’ve got one fridge drawer i can use (the other is full of Dairylea cheese strips for DS as he has very restricted diet so need to ensure he has enough protein) I had filled it with carrots and leeks, but wondering if I should replace the carrots with parsnips. Will carrots keep outside the fridge?

During lockdown 1, I figured out I can keep carrots for 3/4 weeks if they are in a separate fridge drawer, and wrapped in paper towels which are changed every couple of days, but I haven’t tried to keep them out of the fridge.

Can’t believe we are in lockdown 3 already! So relieved I’ve got Ocado deliveries booked, the supermarkets here seem to have gone insane with huge queues.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 20/12/2020 10:30

All root vegetables will have the same floppy problem to be honest.

I'm lucky with parsnips as I dig them as I need them at the allotment. My carrots always fail though!

OP posts:
Dontlickthetrolley · 20/12/2020 11:00

I've currently got carrots, potatoes, parsnips and a swede stored in the cool box outside my back door. How the fuck has it come to this?
