Brexit

Realistically, how close are we to a deal?

I have read multiple articles on this, some more up to date than others, saying we could get a deal. Now it looks as though we might not. How likely is it that we will?

OP posts:

Turns out they made headway on fisheries yesterday but Frost lobbed a firecracker late last night.

Any more details on this?

Guardian

NoWordForFluffy · 07/12/2020 16:31

@Ellie56, here's the Guardian article.

If that wasn't deliberate sabotage I don't know what is. I'm so angry with the government.

ListeningQuietly · 07/12/2020 16:35

And why do those other EU companies own the quota?
Because British Fishermen SOLD THEIR QUOTA
If Brexit overrides contract law
we are royally screwed

Ellie56 · 07/12/2020 16:54

They're looking to go no deal aren't they? But they want to try and make it look as though it's all the EU's fault.

What happened to the "great deal" Bozo insisted we were going to get back in 2017? Lying bastard.

Ellie56 · 07/12/2020 16:55

Thanks Fluffy.

Mistigri · 07/12/2020 17:07

They've backed down on breaking international law, which I suspect means they are frit and that a deal is a bit more likely than it looked this morning.

But at this point, reading tea leaves would be more accurate. Everyone's just guessing.

TatianaBis · 07/12/2020 17:37

Except they haven’t really backed down because those clauses were to be dropped anyway if a deal was done as they would no longer be needed.

They still need to agree governance and level playing field. Fuck knows where we are on fisheries.

The loons want managed No Deal/contingency/Aus deal.

What Boris wants is not clear probably even to himself. Personally I think if he’s let it get this far without a deal he doesn’t want one. But he may be playing silly buggers.

justanotherneighinparadise · 07/12/2020 17:49

I heard a discussion on the radio today where they said the EU are known for taking discussions up to the wire. So I imagine if there is a deal it will be done in the last hour.

Hayeahnobut · 07/12/2020 17:52

James Cleverly by any chance? That's exactly what he said this morning, more of the EU blame game.

TatianaBis · 07/12/2020 17:53

It’s not the EU taking discussions to the wire here... it’s Boris playing roulette.

MarshmallowManiac · 07/12/2020 18:12

I wish I felt more optimistic, but I feel ND is getting ever nearer, and the idiots in Westminster are not even trying to get a deal. Maybe we should enlighten Boris on the meaning of the word compromise it doesn't seem to be in his vocabulary. Idiot.

Empressofthemundane · 07/12/2020 18:14

Not very. No deal would suit France.

Defenbaker · 07/12/2020 18:17

The way the media is presenting this, it's like they're preparing the public to be told that we're leaving with no deal.

I would prefer a deal and a smooth exit, but I think that no deal is preferable to a bad deal. The timing is awful, I wish this had been done earlier, but whatever happens we will adapt somehow. The sooner they announce what's happening, mthe better. Businesses need to know asap, they only have 24 days left to prepare and that includes the Christmas holiday period. The uncertainty must be awful for those involved in transport and freight forwarding. They need to make a public announcement - soon.

No it would not. But at least the French Government has properly advised and supported their channel ports. France would much rather there was a deal with clear rules.
Mistigri · 07/12/2020 18:58

Oh Macron wants a deal. Just not a bad one (for the EU).

jasjas1973 · 07/12/2020 20:00

Looks like Johnson is off to Brussels to save the day!

NoWordForFluffy · 07/12/2020 20:00

What's the point? The cake-ism is surely insurmountable. 🤷‍♀️

yellowspanner · 07/12/2020 20:31

The problem is clearly Macron and his 2022 election. He wants to keep France's fishing rights in UK waters. Totally unreasonable.

ListeningQuietly · 07/12/2020 20:35

But its the Dutch and Spanish who fish the most in UK waters ....
yeOldeTrout · 07/12/2020 20:40

my stupid Q of day:
why is fishing part of the Brexit deal at all?

Why not park fishing aside as a separate deal & do the rest of Brexit?
I think will still fail due to LPF problem, but fishing could at least not be the obstacle.

Require that all boats fishing in British waters must be at least 80% owned by a British resident or HQ'd company.
EU can impose landing fees to amounts they please on UK fishing boats who land their catches in EU ports.
The fisherfolk can land their catches in UK ports & send the entire catch to become cat food if no UK-domestic-demand & they don't like the EU tariffs.
This is called sovereignty from what I gather.

Sell 2-3 year quotas to EU/other entity fisher people, and use the proceeds to subsidise the landing fees for British boats that want to land catches in EU ports.

I mean, one of these ideas ought to work!

Morechocolateneeded · 07/12/2020 20:50

The total selfishness of the government politicians is mind-blowing.
I doubt they really care about fishing - it's the level-playing field they won't want.

justanotherneighinparadise · 07/12/2020 21:08

@TatianaBis

I’m not sure. I think the UK is under huge pressure to walk away with a better deal than Theresa May managed to broker. The EU are absolutely determined to make an example of the UK incase a good deal emboldens/angers other countries in the block.

Because of this I can’t see a deal being made at all and I fully expect a no deal.
