Westminstenders: Where are we now?

Twenty thousand people
Cross Bösebrücke
Fingers are crossed
Just in case
Walking the dead

Where are we now, where are we now?
The moment you know, you know, you know

Just that.

Don't really want to reflect more than that right now.

Pmk

Thanks red

HoneysuckIejasmine · 12/06/2020 21:29

Pmk, thanks Red and all for keeping me sane. It's nice to know there's other people in the void that I am screaming in.

thecatfromjapan · 12/06/2020 21:32
Thanks
prettybird · 12/06/2020 21:36

Extremely soppy if somewhat inelegant Wink cat, with which to PMK Grin

Really not looking forward to the shitstorm that will be a Covid Depression combined with the self-inflicted wound of a No-Deal Brexit. But at least I have the wherewithal to stock up and prepare. Sad

Early PooMadeKing

Love the idea that Brexit is any more advanced than it was when it was a stain in Farage's boxers in the 80's.

pointythings · 12/06/2020 21:51

Second Brexit stockpile has been started...

JeSuisPoulet · 12/06/2020 21:55

I'm struggling to get a second stockpile going other than pasta, yeast and UHT milk this month. Bit tight here as dd has grown several inches since being off, meaning new shoes/trousers/bike, plus the extra £85pw I'm having to stump up for tutors Sad. Tight month. Still, could be worse and I know many on this thread have had more to deal with.

Arborea · 12/06/2020 21:59

May I just thank acatinjapan and mathanxiety for the thoughtful responses to my post?

I often find myself admiring cat's turn of phrase:

It's been extraordinary - and meanwhile the transfer of wealth into fewer hands goes on, the gross exploitation of the least protected grinds on, Brexit, with its extraordinary potential to accelerate the previous 2 situations, grinds on ... against a carnival of emotionality and what is rapidly descending into a vacuous simulacrum of progressivism, that actually effects the opposite of political liberation.

I think this captures really well what I've been feeling over the past few weeks - the emotional pull and response to the outright racism and misogyny particularly on social media, and in quiet moments the realisation that this shitstorm is drowning out a lot of other important issues. Should I start donning my tinfoil hat, or isn't it convenient to see how well it suits some interests to deflect attention from any number of other issues (Covid, Brexit, Cummings, Jenrick etc etc)? Incidentally, on the Jenrick scandal, am I the only one who was struck at how cheap it was to nobble the deal?

Math I actually read that Pomerantsev article as acknowledging that comparing Russia with Western style democracy was a 'looking from pig to man and man to pig' moment. I picked out the para mentioning stability because of its echoes with Theresa May's similarly empty rhetoric - I don't think a day goes by on Twitter without someone longing for chaos with Ed Miliband.

Anyway, a big thank you to RedToothbrush for continuing these threads. Like very many women I know who have opinions on politics, it can feel unduly risky to air them in most places on the internet. I don't mind at all being politely challenged and disagreed with, however given how upsetting I've found some of the abuse aimed mainly at women on Twitter this week, I'm not feeling emotionally resilient enough currently to engage in mudslinging.

Pepperwort · 12/06/2020 22:46

"On January 1, 2021, we will take back control and regain our political & economic independence." How can they lie so easily? Still? I actually thought a bit more of Gove. Not much more, but a bit.
A thought I've had before: please, EU, remember we did not all vote for this, not even in England. Many of us have been unhappy with Britain's direction for years.

mrslaughan · 12/06/2020 23:00

Have any of you watched the video of the couple stopped son their driveway by two white police officers (for no good reason) in Suffolk ....
It just shows the level of institutional racism. The white female officer seemingly trying to dismiss their complaint with "your just jumping on the band wagon"
I mean where do you start to try and change that ingrained mentality.....

saveeno · 12/06/2020 23:00

I am late to the party, but under a previous name did contribute.

Honestly what the F is going on? Brexit, Covid, Recession. What are they thinking?

I suppose they think it will all be fine, because you know, exceptionalism, hubris and all that.

Some will not be affected, but place your bets as to who will be. No guesses needed, it is inevitable. Sad times all round given all that has gone on with Covid and the ineptitude in dealing with it there. Doesn't give me much hope for Brexit.

DrBlackbird · 12/06/2020 23:06

Early PMK here. Having to stick to lurking for now as uni work all encompassing.

But was looking back at some of my slides from last year. For 2019-20 academic year, the department I'm in had 35% EU students, 45% International and 20% UK... and now only allowed to pick up an additional 5% UK students. Talk about a coming shit show. So many great colleague have already left back for the EU and I can't blame them although I miss them.

What has the UK come to with its perfect storm of populism, exceptionalism, and journalistic / fundmanging political elite about to land a windfall shorting the pound.

These threads are pretty much the only antidote to my depression about the state of the nation and many of its citizens. So please carry on discussing the mighty and the mundane from breadmaking to Brexit. The full range of commentary is enlightening, enriching, and sometimes the only reason for a laugh.

I am just hoping that we get to see the family in the UK before the no-deal crisis takes over from the Covid crisis. FFS.

Sostenueto · 13/06/2020 06:15

Pmk and thanks Red💐
No chance of restocking for Brexit here. I have got to help dd out as her Universal Credit stops at end of month as Dgd officially leaves school. ( Last date of what would have been A level exams). Dd has no idea how she is going to pay her rent and council tax ( over half her wages) without UC top up. She's relieved she gets child benefit till September but nonetheless is worried how she is going to feed Dgd and herself considering the other half of wages has to pay utilities, tv licence etc and doesn't think £20 a week is enough to do the job of feeding and clothing them both.

borntobequiet · 13/06/2020 06:20

PMK, thanks again. Not sure if I’ve posted this pic before

Westminstenders: Where are we now?
Sostenueto · 13/06/2020 06:24

Today I see my whole family for the first time in 3 months and my Dgd is staying overnight. She has not been out even for exercise since first week in March. Steroids to suppress immune system finished a couple of days ago and platlet count up to 100,000. She was crying with joy over phone that she will see me and the outside. Little pleasures for an 18 yr old. Sure many people will be joyful today!

Sostenueto · 13/06/2020 06:27

My dog will also be overjoyed and I wish you all joy as families and loved ones can be reunited today!

@Sostenueto. Frabjous day. So pleased for your dad.
