BBC News

Is this the Brexit you voted for, Leavers??

Seriously? Threatening the EU?

Text: "The UK has warned the EU it will walk away from trade talks in June unless there is a "broad outline" of a deal.

Michael Gove told MPs the UK wanted to strike a "comprehensive free trade agreement" in 10 months.

But the government would not accept any alignment with EU laws as the EU is demanding, with Mr Gove adding: "We will not trade away our sovereignty."

The EU has already set out its priorities ahead of the formal start of the talks on Monday."

One would almost think No Deal was precisely what we're heading for....

Maybe someone will come from the other side and tell us, in italics Wink why this is great news.

It will put an end to Brexit short term.

Longer term, I think it will reinforce it. I suspect Corona virus may be the catalyst that brings about the inevitable Euro collapse and end of EU as it currently is.

Europe will be seen as it is, a collection of nation states brutally prioritising their own citizens. Why will Spain and Italy stay in the overvalued Euro as they seek to rebuild?!

Danetobe · 14/03/2020 13:11

Well the british exit has happened already. I don't think the EU will end, just stagger on in a weakened form. Same with the UK.

Doubletrouble99 · 14/03/2020 15:23

No, definitely not. I don't think this will even put an end to the negotiations with the EU. They can do it via conference calls and skype.

It is going to be so expensive to implement Brexit though and the economy is going to have enough to cope with without Brexit as well. I wouldn't be surprised if it is put on indefinite hold. I just don't think we can afford to hammer the economy any more.

Doubletrouble99 · 14/03/2020 16:59

Seventyone We've left! We won't be going back on that so we can't put it on indefinite hold.

We won't be going back on that so we can't put it on indefinite hold
But Transition could be extended for

Why will Spain and Italy stay in the overvalued Euro as they seek to rebuild?!

So they'd reintroduce the Lira and Peseta? trashing what little stability is left, i don't think so, even Greece didn't seriously consider a return to the Drachma.
The euro is/was the world second most traded currency, look at the £ against the euro since the CV crisis took hold? sterling has fallen quite a bit and not just against the Euro, we are in a very very weak position outside of the worlds largest trading bloc.

FUSOI · 15/03/2020 06:19

a fair bit of clutching at straws going on here.

Jason118 · 15/03/2020 09:47

What's wrong with a straw?

FUSOI · 15/03/2020 15:34

"What's wrong with a straw?"

Nothing, they are great for keeping a good grasp on reality

larrygrylls · 15/03/2020 17:15

Jasjas,

Sterling has fallen because the Bank of England cut rates 50bps and the ECB did nothing.

To be fair, GBP/EUR has done little since Brexit and we are now mid range.

jasjas1973 · 17/03/2020 21:53

Sterling has fallen because the "markets" do not see us as a good long term bet...pst CV, the euro is a better bet.
Sterling was falling way before the BoE base rate cut, which did zilch to calm anyone.
£ has been rising steadily against the euro, from 1.10 to a high of 1.21, now below june '16 levels.

The next round of talks won't happen, there are bigger fish to fry.
Brexit transition will probably be put on hold until talks begin for proper again next year, neither side will be able to afford a no-deal exit after CV has subsided, assuming it does? some experts predict another 2 years of CV.......
