Wonder how Timmy Wetherspoons is frothing today?

Points based??

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-51550421BBC

"Low-skilled workers would not get visas under post-Brexit immigration plans unveiled by the government.

It is urging employers to "move away" from relying on "cheap labour" from Europe and invest in retaining staff and developing automation technology."

And take on the 6m 'economically inactive' 16-64 year olds in Britain.

Good luck with that.

Gosh, that devil is in the detail, innit?

And, separate but important point, who the chuff is clamouring to get into the UK, now, other than southern Asians uniting families? (Which I completely understand).

No it's pretty normal round here (Midlands). It's a nice trope to use to bash the young and feckless.

BadTadfeld · 19/02/2020 22:52

Where are these 8 million economically inactive people?

I was one for a while. I was looking after children of course. Then I wanted to go back to work. I wanted to get a job in the NHS as an allied professional. Sadly the funding and on the job traning that used to exist has gone, maybe partly because it's been quicker and easier to poach trained staff from other countries. I can't afford to be a student for three years with my responsibilities either. I do now have a job but not in the NHS. I'd happily reconsider if there was an opportunity.

Potkettlexx · 19/02/2020 22:53

@Jason118

Why do you think I feel they should cap it?

Squirrelpeanutbutter · 19/02/2020 22:59

If you want to go and live in Australia, you have to have a specific trade, qualification or skill. Why aren’t people up in arms about that?

Potkettlexx · 19/02/2020 23:03

Why do people always use the example of ‘Where are the 2 million care workers we need going to come from?’

I mean do you honestly think the government would still cap those vacancies??? Come on, stop trying to make it in to something it’s not.

They won’t stop low skilled workers that we need will they out if principal...?!!! 🙄

Jason118 · 19/02/2020 23:07

Oh dear.....

swimlyn · 19/02/2020 23:09

Strawberry and Jason: The continuing destruction of our wealth-making manufacturing industries and added-value industries means that the young will have few ‘real’ opportunities in life unfortunately. Brain Drain for the qualified, arse-wiping or fruit-picking for the rest.

…urging employers to "move away" from relying on "cheap labour"…
Obviously then, zero hours contracts are soon to be outlawed.

Other countries have similar systems. But AFAIK they didn't introduce them at a time when they had voluntarily wiped out many of their existing trade agreements and were about to enter into a period of extremely tense negotiations, led by rather inexperienced politicians, against a far stronger opponent and were facing huge economic uncertainty.
An excellent summary of the situation. Thank you @AuldAlliance.

Except I’d replace “rather inexperienced politicians” with “blithering idiots”. Before even starting negotiations they’ve already waded in with impetuous statements as if we’re in charge. So so stupid…

@Potkettlexx Gosh. IPMSL

Jason118 · 19/02/2020 23:14

@swimlyn you're being unfair to blithering idiots

Squirrel I thought the same...it's because the posters here don't live in Australia.

My first thought on reading the OP was "Like Australia then?"

Here, caring jobs are often done by students...18 year olds....the pay is equivalent to about thirteen pounds an hour.

Saying that, it's not only young students who do it...a lot of parents do it to but that pay is on the low side here in Oz....a shop assistant can earn less though.

@swimlyn

Take it you didn’t vote Brexit... Oh well 🤣

BillHadersNewWife · 19/02/2020 23:29

Bear in mind that some things here in Oz are way more expensive than in the UK. Food for one...though now we have Aldi, it's manageable for those on a low income.

Other things are better....if you rent, you don't pay our equivalent of council tax...the landlord pays that.

People often say "Ah but that will be reflected in the rent cost...they charge you more"

But rentals here are more or less like for like...a three bed house with garden in a nice, well appointed (middle class) town in South Australia costs about 300 dollars a week to rent. That's $1200 a month.

In the UK the average one bed home costs around 600 pounds per month...which is actually more than the cost of a 3 bed house in Oz...it's about 1160 dollars.

@Lailaha I'm struggling to follow your logic. I can't see anywhere in the OP that mentions either white or Christian. We need people to do stuff and the new policy makes it more difficult. Unless you think something else was meant?

Jaxhog · 19/02/2020 23:36

I thought this was what Brexiteers wanted?

Peregrina · 19/02/2020 23:40

I thought this was what the Brexiters wanted too - because the immigrants are taking their jobs, so when they have gone they will be absolutely desperate to get back to fruit picking and whatnot.

wonderstuff · 19/02/2020 23:41

EU unskilled migrants will be staying in Eurozone anyway since the pound dropped. The hostile environment has been chasing away those who can work in other EU countries. What we've never really done, and what remain failed to do, is be clear about how valuable migration is, how important it is to our economy.
I think our economy will shrink, so many sectors are going to be struggling. We simply don't have enough young people to fill the gaps. Think the Eurozone will happily take in skilled migrants from the UK too.

AgeLikeWine · 19/02/2020 23:41

If Leave / Tory supporters voted for anything in 2016 & 2019, it was getting immigration under control. You don’t have to be a BNP supporter to think the current situation is unsustainable.

The British economy has for many years been addicted to limitless quantities of cheap unskilled migrant labour, which has depressed wages and productivity and allowed bad employers to exploit workers who can easily be replaced.

Weaning the economy off this dependency is undoubtedly going to be painful, and it will be interesting to see how long the process retains widespread public support when key sectors start feeling the pinch.

Potkettlexx · 19/02/2020 23:42

@Jason118

It doesn’t make it more difficult.

If there is a need in a certain sector, it just means that anyone regardless of nationality, colour, religion etc.... will have equal opportunity.

Makes it much fairer for everyone, particularly those from outside the EU.

Peregrina · 19/02/2020 23:46

Could you tell us why the current situation is unsustainable?

Certainly for years and years we have been dependent on immigrant labour - you only have to think of the Windrush Scandal - those people came because they were invited, because they were needed. Or at least, we thought we needed them, but the 1950s were a time of women being forced back into housework because the men wanted 'their' jobs back. Who knows what would have happened if we had adopted different economic and social models?

AutumnRose1 · 19/02/2020 23:48

“ I do however not have a solution for the lack of staff in the care sector and I really think there should be an exemption for that.”

This.
