Saying goodbye to the EU

Am listening to Radio Five Live and one of the topics is what would you say in your goodbye to the EU?

Mine would be - relived to an EU country passport holder and remain as a supporter of the EU. Hoping that the UK will rejoin.

Will be quietly humming "ce n'est qu'un au revoir mes frères" which is the French version of Auld Lang Syne.

Icantreachthepretzels · 29/01/2020 11:21

Just not all on eu terms but a more equal one

Yes I'm sure the giant trading bloc super power is going to treat the little island as an equal and give them better terms than they enjoyed back when they were at the very centre of the giant trading bloc super power Hmm

I would say: I'm sorry so many of my country men are delusional, I'm sorry they believed the lies and the charlatans. But please always remember - when brutal reality hits them - that 16.1 million of us valued you, appreciated you and understand that Britain was a better place as part of you. And that it isn't only Scotland that wants to remain - it is never that simple. There are leave voters in Scotland and there are 13 million remain voters in England. Please don't give into the temptation of categorising 'good Scotland' and 'bad England' - the kind of easy solution, xenophobic, blame mongering that characterises the very worst of the leave camp, otherwise you will be no better than they are. There are British people across the whole UK who lose their rights and identities on Friday and who are heartbroken about it - please remember them and please be willing to extend the offer of friendship - even to England - when we finally manage to counteract the lies in a way that even our broken and unfit for modern purpose democracy can no longer ignore.
And be on guard for the charlatans, the authoritarians and the power hungry in your own midst. Be on guard for outside interference in you elections - and against those in your own countries who would sell you out to them. We once thought it could never happen in Britain. It has happened - and it can happen in your home countries too, if you are not proactive in discovering it and rooting it out before the poison takes hold.
If you truly stand for what I believe you stand for, then you will be willing to forgive and allow us to rejoin when finally truth and sense wins out. I hope it will not be too long.

loldie99 · 29/01/2020 11:36

In Scotland a lot of us are saying " Leave a light on for us to find our way home." This was first said by Alyn Smith, now my local MP, in the European parliament last year & sums up how many of us feel.

cologne4711 · 29/01/2020 11:37

And hope you enjoy watching the UK crash and burn, we deserve it

Well that's a nice sentiment for the 16 million who voted to remain.

Disco91 · 29/01/2020 11:59

Good luck Germany paying for everything now! Sorry your cash cow (or treasure island as your exporters like to call us) is leaving you to foot the bill for all the new countries you've allowed to join recently Grin

malylis · 29/01/2020 12:20

You realise the UK was the main driver for the eastern european countries to join right?

The UK was also the biggest supporter of Turkey.

The UKs net contribution is 5 percent of the entire EU budget too.

Ignorance is bliss

Miljea · 29/01/2020 13:40

Dear EU- Brexit will be the best inoculation you need against other members imagining leaving is a good idea.

You're already seeing the 'appetite' for others to leave, waning.

Watch and learn. 🙁

swampusdonkus · 29/01/2020 14:12

I'd say thank you EU for the circa £680 million p.a. Wales has received from the EU, mainly through its Structural Fund, which has benefited so many socio-economically deprived communities here over the years. Community regeneration projects, help to get back to work etc. I'd say sorry that a majority of people in Wales voted to leave, clearly having no clue how much we've benefited from being a member of the EU. I'd also say don't forget the millions of us who don't want to leave, that we are being dragged out against our will in what is an act of sheer lunacy 🇪🇺

MysteryTripAgain · 29/01/2020 14:15

Dear EU,

Thank you for helping to prolong the Brexit process. The reduced value of Sterling was a great help to me when paid in US$ and Euro.

If there is a vote by the UK to rejoin the EU there will be another artificial exchange rate I can benefit from.

Cattenberg · 29/01/2020 14:27

Please remember that millions of us do not want to leave. If the UK does turn into the low-regulation, race-to-the-bottom tax haven that some Leavers want, please make it easy for our young people to start new lives in the EU. They were too young to vote for Brexit and they deserve better.

FrownPrincess · 29/01/2020 14:46

I’m so sorry, and I’m ashamed of the behaviour of our MEPs ... I wanted to curl up and die of embarrassment when Farage et al turned their backs during the European anthem. Please don’t think we’re all like them.
Thank you for the support and opportunities you’ve given us, it’s a great shame our children won’t benefit from the same. I hope we can still be friends.

Peregrina · 29/01/2020 14:52

I am ashamed of some of our MEPs - Farage and Co.

jasjas1973 · 29/01/2020 15:26

Sorry your cash cow (or treasure island as your exporters like to call us) is leaving you

Dear EU, So sorry that the UK education system is so terrible and that EU goods will cost even more for the impoverished UK consumer, ripped off by UK importers.

MasakaBuzz · 29/01/2020 15:50

@swampusdonkus

Wales hasn’t received 680 million pounds from the EU. The EU doesn’t have any money.

What Wales has been given is British Taxpayer’s money, with the EU taking a cut.

The U.K. is a net contributor. Any money sent back by the EU was our own money originally.

malylis · 29/01/2020 15:58

Except Wales would never have got that money if it hadn't been directed by the EU.

Less than one percent of public spending is our net contribution.

swampusdonkus · 29/01/2020 16:04

@MasakaBuzz

Of course we paid in; I didn't say it was 'free' money. But there's not a cat in hell's chance we'd get anything like that from a Tory Government. So we lose out.

BiBabbles · 29/01/2020 16:22

My non-EU status goes unchanged, though it's kinda sad getting through the UK citizenship hoops have taken so long I'll not only not be an EU, I might get it just in time for things to be un-united with how things are going.

I hope the EU's fledgling acts to stand-up against FATCA continues and goes well so they and other countries grow a spine to that & other US nonsense. I hope EU citizens who've had their accounts frozen or closed due to FATCA get the support they need. It baffles me how the EU has rolled over for the US for so long that it came to that, but at the same time they're pretty much the only hope for push back at this time as the most of the contenders to Trump want to expand it and Johnson seems quite happy to throw everyone, and especially those of us not as lucky as him to be able to renounce US citizenship, under the US's bus of extraterritorial powers and nonsense.

Clavinova · 29/01/2020 17:19

I'd say thank you EU for the circa £680 million p.a. Wales has received from the EU, mainly through its Structural Fund, which has benefited so many socio-economically deprived communities here over the years.

Actually, a bit less than half of EU funding for Wales is through Structural/Social/Regional Development Funds:

"Wales currently receives approximately £680 million in EU funds per year.The main sources are":
▪ £295 million in EU Structural Funds from the European Social Fund (ESF) and European Regional Development Fund (ERDF);
▪ £274 million in direct payments to farmers from the CAP; and
▪ £80 million in funding from the Rural Development Programme
(National Assembly for Wales Finance Committee September 2018)

The same report indicates that direct CAP payments to farmers will be reduced from 2021 in any case;

"As wider context, the European Commission has proposed that direct payments to farmers under CAP to be “moderately reduced” under the 2021-27 multi-annual financial framework (MFF)."

VodselForDinner · 29/01/2020 17:23

I’m not a Brit (thankfully).

On Friday night, I’ll raise a glass to Scotland.

Jason118 · 29/01/2020 17:41

@Icantreachthepretzels perfectly put.

BMW6 · 29/01/2020 20:45

It didn't work out, hope we can be friendly in future, good luck

malylis · 29/01/2020 21:07

Aye that's what Frog face said today.

Festering turd that he is.

frumpety · 29/01/2020 21:20

Does anyone know when the Russian report is going to be published ?

AuldAlliance · 29/01/2020 21:28

On January 45th, I believe. There'll be a blue moon that night and a month of Sundays to follow.

Strategicchoring · 30/01/2020 00:26

Thank you President Ursula for your gracious speech, despite the odious behaviour of Farage and co. I am so happy for you that he is vacating the building. Thank you for cutting off his final hateful words.

Please remember that 48% of those who voted in the referendum wanted to remain with you. And many British expats living in Europe weren't given the chance to vote, despite being profoundly affected by the outcome. Please don't forget us.

I hope we will be back with you soon, once the majority of UK citizens come to realise how good they had it when we stood in solidarity with you our 27 neighbours and trading partners. In the meantime I wish you peace and prosperity and please keep importing Melton Mowbray pork pies from Jan 2021 or my DH will get very upset.
