How will we measure Brexit’s success or failure?

I’ve been pondering this for ages now

In any ‘normal’ project you’d have targets, objectives, deadlines, reviews etc but for Brexit beyond 2 deadlines of 31/1/20 and 31/12/20 there’s nothing

People talk about politicians being accountable now but what do we expect them to deliver and by when

Of course discussion about the process of Brexit and the events of the GE will continue, you can't just bin history as you go. Analysing events, holding people to account (or trying to) will be an essential part of dealing with our future.

mrslaughan · 22/01/2020 20:36

Ok - so coming back to the original post Bear....
I just don't think it can be measured, because it was intentionally undefined..... and for different voters who wanted it, they all voted for different things.
There's those that voted for the different passport, but a stagnant economy and weak pound means that trips to the continent are unaffordable.

Those who voted because of immigration, but then can't see a doctor, raised food prices because migrant workers aren't picking our food......who then claim "I didn't vote for that"

There's so many examples.

It's like a performance review - if a employee's targets are not clearly defined and measurable - it's meaningless.

Bearbehind · 22/01/2020 20:37

jas and ghost there’s little point in me continuing to engage with you as you are 2 prevalent posters on the WM threads which is just a refuge for those who insist on trying to change the past and deny what’s now happening

I hope you find some peace with this all at some point - clearly nothing I have to say will give you that

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 22/01/2020 20:39

Oh sorry, I must have posted on the wrong thread - I thought it was about how we could measure the success or failure of Brexit.

It is hate but some seem to have taken the opportunity to continue the crusade to insist all Tories are scum whilst refusing to acknowledge that the Tories didn’t win, the opposition threw it away

OP posts:
DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 22/01/2020 20:41

There's no debating stupid

AuldAlliance · 22/01/2020 20:42

That is very sweeping and frankly rude, Bear, given the range of attitudes on the WM threads.

Bearbehind · 22/01/2020 20:44

It really isn’t auld but that’s my opinion, others are free to disagree

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 22/01/2020 20:45

doris it’s really not surprising people get pissed off over this subject when the likes of you insist on repeatedly calling them stupid just because they disagree

OP posts:
GhostofFrankGrimes · 22/01/2020 20:47

I'm not trying to change the past bear but the "winners" cant just airbrush out the last 4 years because it's going to come back and bite them on the arse.

I don't work in agriculture or manufacturing. I have an EU member state passport so I really shouldn't give a toss about the brexit fall out. That's the general thinking post general election isn't it? I'm alright jack.

jasjas1973 · 22/01/2020 20:52

Bear- i didn't go on Mumsnet for some 2/3 months because of posters like you, only recently came back..... you haven't changed! You don't like any form of opposition and sulk when you come across it.

As for peace, i ve an Irish passport, thanks to my Nan who was born in Dublin.

However, i did try and engage with your OP but all you could do is tear into me and not respond, so your last post is a bit rich to say the least.

Earlier i wrote:
Anyhow, back to your OP.... i think the only real way to gauge the success or otherwise of Brexit, is to look at our standing across a range of international league tables now and then in a few years time compare again

I would add, that it will be interesting to see how we engage with the EU in future, will we be collaborative or will we become distant & a competitor to all things EU?

NiceGuyNeddie · 22/01/2020 20:56

the Tories didn’t win, the opposition threw it away

But there's no use in keep flogging that horse either. Labour offered an opposing choice, very different from that of the Tories. The majority (in terms of FPTP) chose the Tories. They didn't, for instance, refuse to vote/spoiled their ballot/voted for a much smaller party, they chose the Tories.

That will have to be 'owned' too.

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 22/01/2020 20:56

when the likes of you insist on repeatedly calling them stupid just because they disagree

Pointing out the massive flaws in their logic first, and only then calling them stupid for persisting in ignoring them.

But irony ( or self reflection) are obviously not strong points...

jasjas1973 · 22/01/2020 20:56

So far Bear, in just 4 pages, you ve fallen out with how many posters? :) lol!

But it's ALL everyone else's fault boo hoo!!!

Bearbehind · 22/01/2020 20:59

jas I’ve fallen out with the Brexit deniers on here because I honestly CBA with you all

I’m not sulking, I just really don’t see the point in discussing this with people who’s default position is ‘this shouldn’t be happening’

It’s happening - get over it

OP posts:
NiceGuyNeddie · 22/01/2020 21:00

And so it goes around and around..

Bearbehind · 22/01/2020 21:01

And I also responded to your comments that did actually relate to the OP jas

OP posts:
frumpety · 22/01/2020 21:01

Maybe not (officially) in parliament frumpety but there are Tory Remainer voters

Unfortunately they along with leave voters have absolutely no power to determine what happens next, or at least not for the next 4 and a bit years.

ListeningQuietly · 22/01/2020 21:45

Brexit will be a success when

  • the atlas is all pink again
  • when the commonwealth is renamed the empire
  • when America admits that Harry has been sent there to be their king
Bearbehind · 22/01/2020 22:02

listening again, views like that achieve nothing

It’s happening so we need to go with it

OP posts:
GhostofFrankGrimes · 22/01/2020 22:09

Go with what? nobody other than johnson has any control over this.

I lost but I ain't backing something that is shit.

NiceGuyNeddie · 22/01/2020 22:11

It’s happening - get over it

Views like that won't achieve anything either. People who didn't agree with Brexit are never going to accept it. The only way that would happen is if, going back to your OP, there was something we could see appreciably improved in our lives by Brexit.

There are millions of voters out there who didn't want Brexit and although they will of course get on with their lives as they have to, there's going to be an almighty storm brewing the further we get into this mess.

A month on from the GE there is no sign at all of any clear direction from this government.

Bearbehind · 22/01/2020 22:11

Fine ghost

Refuse to support it all you like

It’s still happening

OP posts:
ListeningQuietly · 22/01/2020 22:14

Bearbehind
What is happening ?

There is no trade deal
there is no political plan
there is a demographic time bomb
there is a climate catastrophe

I'll stick to colouring in the map thank you Grin

GhostofFrankGrimes · 22/01/2020 22:16

I know it's happening. I wont support brexit, its shit. Get over it .

Lonelycrab · 22/01/2020 22:20

That is very sweeping and frankly rude, Bear, given the range of attitudes on the WM threads.

Agree completely @AuldAlliance
The WM threads have been invaluable to me getting through all this because there is a lot of really good, impartial thinking going on. Unlike some threads🤨
