Tonight 10pm

YouGov MRP.

First big poll

Rumour is that it shows a big tory majority.

This would fit with two MRP polls that are already out if accurate.

Datapraxis is suggesting a Tory majority of 48.

Best for Britain (Pro remain) is suggesting a majority of 57.

www.newscientist.com/article/2224783-what-is-mrp-and-can-it-predict-the-result-of-the-uk-general-election/
What is MRP and can it predict the result of the UK general election?

It stands for multi-level regression and post-stratification. Its a polling method which uses demographic data to work out how people will vote. YouGov used it to accurately predict the 2017 result and the method was used to predict the 2016 US election.

I'm begining to think that as a country we really need to hit rock bottom before we begin to rebuild. That terrifies me.

So many deaths already from austerity. I can't see things getting any better for a long long time.

If I was single and didn't have a disabled mother to support, I would seriously be considering getting out.

Letseatgrandma · 29/11/2019 08:34

BJ is always available for Laura K to do one of her fawning pieces. It's just the professionals he avoids

Totally agree. She is no journalist.

prettybird · 29/11/2019 08:36

But I'm not going to give Stanley the benefit of the doubt for his defence of his son saying that his son is the PM so you people don't understand the demands on his time Hmm

It's a fucking election. That he wanted Confused. The fact that he will only choose to turn up for the 2 head to heads shows he doesn't give a fuck about the choice of parties that is available to us as voters - just that he thinks he can "win" against Corbyn and would be hammered by Sturgeon Angry

He would do his interview with Andrew Neil if he were genuinely concerned about "balance". Angry

Is it just me or is it a bit concerning that my opponent has recieved a donation of £6666.66 from the guy caught up in this investigation of Russian influence in UK elections?

Yes indeed. From 2015 he has declared multiple payments from Alexander Temerko and from his company the Offshore Group Newcastle Ltd, but as
@BorisJohnson
and
@VotePursglove
would say..no Russian influence or interference here!

QueenOfThorns · 29/11/2019 08:39

Working class men are “likely to be drunk, criminal, aimless, feckless and hopeless”.
And the children of single mothers are “ill-raised, ignorant, aggressive and illegitimate”.

If Tories really think like this, it’s not surprising they have the policies that they do Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 29/11/2019 08:51

I'd advise any young adult who can, to emigrate before they develop ties that make this difficult
They are far more mobile before they acumulate a house and contents, let alone partner and DC

Another advantage is that for most countries it would mean they no longer have to pay back student debt

TatianaLarina · 29/11/2019 08:53

Totally agree. She is no journalist.

The problem is the calibre of journalists. There are a few like Faisal Islam that have a background in economics but most journalists and editorial teams haven't a flipping clue it seems. They are only interested in playing it out through the political prism. Tories vs Labour. ERG vs rest of Tories. Corbyn vs back benches. They just parrot what they are fed by politicians as they are as caught up in the intrigue and infighting as the politicians. Instead of rising above and reporting facts.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/11/2019 09:17

If LauraK did similar grovelling interviews with Corbyn, Swinson, NS then we'd know she is just crap but honest

Wise words for the festive season

BigChocFrenzy · 29/11/2019 09:25

re Tory worries that Trump could be toxic to them during the GE:

BJ is not only chickening out of leadership debates, he's chickening out of his basic duties as a PM hosting a NATO summit

Normally any UK PM would be grabbing the opportunity for a 1-on-1 with any POTUS and as many leaders of other important (to us) countries as possible

However, he doesn't dare be seen with Trump and he doesn't dare offend him either .... so he'll probably chicken out of meeting any of the leaders

Ridiculous - and I hope someone has a stern word with him about doing his bloody job.

Tom Newton Dunn@tnewtondunn

In a first for a visiting US President, no bilateral talks scheduled with Trump and PM in No10 next week.

Johnson also unlikely to hold bilats in Downing St with any of NATO’s 29 leaders so as not to be seen to snub Trump.

Alsohuman · 29/11/2019 09:29

I’m looking forward to the Trump visit for exactly the same reasons Johnson’s shitting himself. His intervention at the beginning of the campaign was too early to inflict any real damage, just before polling day is another matter. He’s going to shoot his mouth off, isn’t he?

The Tories say Ofsted will check that schools are doing sports and arts in extra curricular activities. What? 😳It’s the Tories who have slashed budgets in these very areas, they will boost money to Ofsted to inspect areas where they have cut the budget? Talk about irony! 😡

dontcallmelen · 29/11/2019 09:39

Honey sincere condolences💐

Violetparis · 29/11/2019 09:40

Boris not having an easy interview on LBC right now, being asked about trust, trade deals, funding for social care etc. Boris is bumbling alot.

Violetparis · 29/11/2019 09:41

Someone asking about his comments on single mothers now, I'm watching it live.

Alsohuman · 29/11/2019 09:41

So he’s getting a tough time from Ferrari? Thought he was supposed to be one of his henchmen?

Meanwhile ... Have the courts found you guilty of discriminatory employment practices ? Then don't obey the law - sue the state

www.theregister.co.uk/2019/11/27/oracle_wage_discrimination/

coming to a "rebalanced" UK court near you just as soon as Boris can be found to be PM

Oracle has finally addressed long standing accusations that it discriminates against and underpays women and minorities by... suing the government department that has repeatedly flagged the issue, claiming it has no authority over Larry and his boys.

In a lawsuit [PDF] filed Wednesday in a Washington DC district court, Big Red accuses the US Department of Labor of “unprecedented overreach by an executive agency,” and claims the agency doesn’t have the authority to cut Oracle out of government contracts for its discriminatory practices or sue it for underpaying certain staff.

(contd)

Of course, with no written constitution, it's much easier to rip up the UKs gossamer veil of protections. Probably a really good time for judges to consider their positions, before the purges start.

Health warning - don't get too distracted with an argument between the Tories & Channel 4 News...

in whose interest is it that the media is once again not really talking about Conservative policies this morning?
#GE2019

DGRossetti · 29/11/2019 10:16

Regarding the Independent candidate standing in Rutland and Melton, Anthony Watchorn; who sadly passed away leaving their name on the ballot paper, I wonder how the law works with votes cast for them ?

If people wanted a safe way to vote and be counted, voting for a dead candidate seems a newsworthy if potentially insensitive way to do it.

(Maybe it's thinking like that which was badly described yesterday Hmm. There's no question that you can't really afford to be squeamish if you are intent on defeating an enemy that ha lost it's decency. That's the weakness that will defeat you)

Health warning - don't get too distracted with an argument between the Tories & Channel 4 News... in whose interest is it that the media is once again not really talking about Conservative policies this morning?

This is very true.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/11/2019 10:56

DG Independents can be a useful option, dead or alive

  • but one does need to read up on their policies, as some anodyne description can hide extreme or dangerous beliefs

As I posted, parties can prevent a candidate from standing for their party, which also works if the candidate has sadly died after nominations closed

However, Independents have no party, so people can still vote for them - and some probably will, since not all have heard

How the law works:
Votes for them would be counted, but it wouldn't matter because few Independents get elected anyway, even after the most strenuous campaigning

imo, it is a legal loophole that should be closed, to be fair to voters and indeed the family of a deceased candidate
