Westministenders: Promises, promises

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

I repeat: there are NO "MPs' accounts" (on any social media platform) because there are no MPs Confused Parliament has been dissolved.

There are only candidates and the previous incumbent.

Dusty01 · 21/11/2019 12:15

Mistigri is there anyone I can contact about this? There was a Guardian page I saw a while ago that had a form you could fill out - if you saw anything that wasn't right (connected to the Election).

I can't find it anymore.

Dusty01 · 21/11/2019 12:18

Crunchy Carrot - how can they report me for saying - 'This is what my daughter is experiencing at school or in the health service?'

DGRossetti · 21/11/2019 12:21

It shouldn't be possible for MPs to block constituents on official social media accounts (unless they are abusive). U.K. law needs an overhaul in this respect.

Be much, much quicker to get FB to change their T&Cs:

2.1.1) accounts held be persons discharging an official capacity.

  • If an account is held by someone as part of their role as an official in their host country, the account will be subject to a level of monitoring to ensure (a) the rights of the named person to hold it (b) that the account is correctly marked as being so held and (c) the account is operated according to Facebooks conditions regarding transparency.

Facebook reserves the right to remove the official markings on an account or suspend an account if it is found to be in violation of this policy.

..................................

That's one of the reasons the government were so desperate to get ol' Zuck before the HoC committee. Facebook can move far faster than any UK law.

I’m quite pleased with the Labour manifesto. (As a floating voter seriously concerned I’d have to spoil my ballot.) Both in general, and because of their commitment to strengthening single-sex exemptions in the equality act, if I’ve read it correctly. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3749325-Hang-on-Labour-manifesto-references-single-sex-exemptions

metro.co.uk/2017/07/22/farage-called-a-bllock-faced-foghorn-of-ignorance-by-author-philip-pullman-6798223

Nigel Farage has been called a ‘foghorn of ignorance’ after he claimed to know what Article 50 contains.

The world-famous author Philip Pullman described the Brexit-supporter ‘b*llock-faced’.

(contd)

Interestingly this was posted on FB by a friend who these past 3 years has religiously avoided all and any political or current affairs commentary.

QueenOfThorns · 21/11/2019 12:45

That’s really interesting (about FB rules), DGR. But as pointed out just above, there are no MPs anymore, so do those rules apply to those accounts during the election period?

CrunchyCarrot · 21/11/2019 12:46

Crunchy Carrot - how can they report me for saying - 'This is what my daughter is experiencing at school or in the health service?'

They can - doesn't mean anything will be done about it, however, unless it breaks FB's Community standards (that comment is pretty innocent). However if they reported all your posts and the accounts were looked into, then you would be breaking the 'Authenticity' standard - i.e. you are misrepresenting who you are by not using your real name (I presume some of your duplicate accounts don't go by that!). "That's why we require people to connect on Facebook using the name that they go by in everyday life."

I'm sure this has already been posted but it's worth another go.

This is a shocking state of affairs! How can this election be called democratic.

Dusty absolutely nothing you can do, though you could make a Twitter account and post there instead. If you are among the first to reply to a tweet by your MP, a lot of people will see what you have written, even if he subsequently blocks you. He can't remove your tweets.

Ellie56 · 21/11/2019 12:55

"Bollock-faced foghorn of ignorance."

What a great insult that is and couldn't have been directed at anyone more deserving. Grin Grin

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 21/11/2019 13:03

To Matt Hancock- “given your party has been in power all that time, why have you done absolutely nothing until now?”

Re Matt Hancock’s recent tweet where he pledges to end injustice of people having to sell their homes to pay for care fees. Depressing but necessary thread.

Dusty01 · 21/11/2019 13:04

He doesn't have a Twitter account Mistigirl - It's Iain Duncan Smith.

I'm trying to tweet Facebook to ask them if it's OK for MPs to block "polite posts that attempt to reveal the truth of our current political predicament".

I"m not used to Twitter at all. Not sure if this is good wording - can I improve it? Is it worth me sending it? Who do I send it to?

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 21/11/2019 13:05

And slightly more lighthearted Smile

Dusty01 · 21/11/2019 13:05

Just Facebook I mean?

I really don't understand how Twitter works.

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 21/11/2019 13:06

And slightly more lighthearted, hopefully with picture attached Smile

Not even my main Facebook account is my real real name. It's not my name that's written on my birth certificate, but is what people call me ...

I didn't know it had to be your real name.

Oh well, I've tried to report IDS now. I'll try the twitter thing a bit later. - it will probably be me that ends up getting in trouble.

Dusty01 · 21/11/2019 13:13

"Official Facebook pages of Conservative MPs are deleting polite posts that attempt to reveal the truth of the current political situation here in the UK. Is that OK with Facebook?"

I tweeted that. Just to Facebook. Should I send it to the whole world?

DGRossetti · 21/11/2019 13:28

That’s really interesting (about FB rules), DGR. But as pointed out just above, there are no MPs anymore, so do those rules apply to those accounts during the election period?

They aren't FB rules - just my suggestion as to how easily FB could sort the whole matter out.

If they so wished.

No need for laws, reviews or anything. Just a commercial decision in setting their T&Cs.

DGRossetti · 21/11/2019 13:29

Another way would be for all accounts to be protected from paid-for and official postings unless the account holder opts in.

After all, David Cameron made a big deal about the "opt in" regime for adult content on the internet. So it should be relatively simple to have an "opt in" regime for all organised postings.

KanelbulleKing · 21/11/2019 13:32

I can't get over the level of blatant lying the tories are going for in this election. Don't we have laws to protect the public from this? I've just seen that they've put out another doctored video, this time of Jess Phillips, which makes it look like she's slating the labour manifesto. Then I see that they've launched a fake labour manifesto website and have paid google so it's the first one that comes up if you search for the labour manifesto. How is this ok? How?

DGRossetti · 21/11/2019 13:32

Not even my main Facebook account is my real real name. It's not my name that's written on my birth certificate, but is what people call me [...] I didn't know it had to be your real name

FB (and Twitter, IIRC) had a massive purge a while back and insisted (some) people submitted evidence of ID before allowing them to continue using their accounts. It was pointed out at the time that this did not explain how peoples pets continued to have their own FB pages.

KanelbulleKing · 21/11/2019 13:53

My cat has his own Facebook page. His posts are far more intelligent than our MP's.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 21/11/2019 13:53

Well heres hoping of a polling bounce from the manifesto

DGRossetti · 21/11/2019 13:53

For those that know of Stewart Lee - or Prof. Brian Cox - you should know of Alan Moore who wrote V for Vendetta amongst other things.
