Westminstenders: The Non-Pact Pact

The Brexit Party and the Conservatives have agreed a trumpian pact to no deal. Led by the ERG.

They don't want you to know its a pact because the Conservatives still want One Nation Conservatives types to believe they are still One Nation Conservatives, simply because they say they are. They are not.

The Brexit Party won't stand any candidates in a Conservative held seat. But don't be surprised if there isn't more Non-Pact tactical stepping aside. This of course won't be a Pact. Cos the Brexit Party say its not. And the Conservative Party say its not.

The Liberal Democrats, Plaid and the Greens are in an electoral pact. They say they are in an electoral pact and have published a list.

Meanwhile the Labour Party isn't in a Pact. But there is still talk that in key seats that someone (either the LDs or Labour) should stand aside to try and deseat key Conservatives. This won't happen because the Lib Dems and Labour are not in a pact. And when they say they are not in a pact they aren't.

If after an election we have a hung parliament then either the Conservatives or Labour who are not in a pact and say they will never be in a pact, will try and woo someone to a kingmaker and be in government with them, probably on a supply and demand basis rather than coalition. They'll deny this but we kind of know how this goes...

Farage is not stupid. He has people who pay him to be parliamentary candidates to be stupid on his behalf.

Alsohuman · 12/11/2019 11:13

Sorry but I don't think there is a pact.
I think Boris said no.
Then Farage realised he would get an own goal by standing in every place.
He then went to chat with someone and decided why not target where you can gain the most. This man may not be liked but he isn't stupid.

This ranks with “No press here” for denial of something that’s plain as the nose on your face.

Ellie56 · 12/11/2019 11:14

That's worse than here Hooo. Predicted 59% here.

mummmy2017 · 12/11/2019 11:16

Farage got a Referendum.
He has caused all parties to change their stance on things.
Now he has decided to stand down certain candidates to help the Tories.
Yep, this is a stupid man.

LouiseCollins28 · 12/11/2019 11:17

Very interesting set of numbers there born

KanelbulleKing · 12/11/2019 11:19

pmk

CendrillonSings · 12/11/2019 11:22

Exactly, mummmy2017.

Farage standing down in the 317 is not that helpful to the Tories if he still prevents gains in Labour-held seats. If he stands down in another 50 or so key targets, then that will look much more like a structured tie-up than just a desperate Farage attempting to save face.

By the way, all those Tory Remainers not voting for Boris will almost certainly go Lib Dem, and only because of Jo Swinson’s explicit refusal to allow Corbyn to become Prime Minister. So that particular electoral shift thankfully does nothing for Comrade Corbachev’s chances of being able to wreck the country. Smile

squid4 · 12/11/2019 11:23

Hmm. I've just checked a tactical voting site, it says my constituency, which has a extremely well liked and involved local labour mp, who has served for 9 years, who polled at nearly 80% last time, and is remain, in a young, heavily remain constituency (though citywide 50-50 leave/remain)... will get 39% of the vote.

Er.

I don't think so!!

I think getting people registered to vote will be more successful, I am a bit... dubious of these tactical voting sites.

TokyoSushi · 12/11/2019 11:23

PMK already 5 pages in, thanks!!

DGRossetti · 12/11/2019 11:29

Someone has had a word with Farage (who speaks very good Russian, by the way).

ContinuityError · 12/11/2019 11:30

Did anyone here know that the (Tory) government flogged off the UKs Government Pipeline and Storage System to a Spanish company back in 2015 for a song, and is now paying a Kings Ransom to rent it back ?

Yes! Have mentioned it a quite a few times on here over the years - as in you know the Government really has flogged everything it can when it sells the strategic military and civil pipeline and storage system for peanuts.

Private Eye was big on it at the time.

ContinuityError · 12/11/2019 11:30

And a belated PMK

When Boris says no, isn't it valid to assume that he means Yes? After all we were leaving the EU on 31st October, no ifs or buts, and he preferred to die in a ditch.

CendrillonSings · 12/11/2019 11:43

After all we were leaving the EU on 31st October, no ifs or buts, and he preferred to die in a ditch.

Oh yes, and Farage was going to use his BXP to destroy Boris for that betrayal and ... oh, BXP is getting crushed and Farage is begging for scraps now? Never mind. You do need to update your political analysis now and again when new facts come in, you know...

mummmy2017 · 12/11/2019 11:44

Do you think hating Boris is blocked being you too other things?
The EU are not endearing themselves to UK voters .
The swing needed requires leavers to change their minds, but it seems the I'm bored brigade could swing it for Boris

Sostenueto · 12/11/2019 11:46

Didn't get my state pension till last year and I was 65! 5 years after I was supposed to get it! Thanks Cameron! Yet could not get last year's heating allowance because I was born after 5 th November 1953! My birthday the 18th! So yet another benefit swiped away!

Alsohuman · 12/11/2019 11:47

The EU are not endearing themselves to UK voters

Everyone I know thinks the EU has been endlessly patient with us and doesn’t understand why they haven’t just washed their hands of us.

Dusty01 · 12/11/2019 11:49

I'm a UK voter and the EU seems very patient and reasonable to me too.

They've endeared themselves to me.

Dusty01 · 12/11/2019 11:50

Mummy - why do you think the EU is not endearing itself to UK voters?

Peter Jukes on the unpublished Russia report on Twitter:

@peterjukes

The redactions are understood to have been ordered to protect London-based Russian oligarchs who are either leading donors to the Conservative Party or individuals regarded as friends of the prime minister, Boris Johnson

DGRossetti · 12/11/2019 12:07

I wonder if Hillary Clinton could arrange for the full report to be published ? Because it will be in US hands right now.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/11/2019 12:07

"It is clear to me it is not a Leave majority they want in Parliament, it is just a Tory one."

Has Farage only just realised that ? Hmm
Surely not, must be for Brexiter consumption

Peregrina · 12/11/2019 12:08

Ahem, if Farage thinks that he has until 17:00 GMT on 14th November to submit nomination papers then he is mistaken.
