Westminstenders: The Non-Pact Pact

The Brexit Party and the Conservatives have agreed a trumpian pact to no deal. Led by the ERG.

They don't want you to know its a pact because the Conservatives still want One Nation Conservatives types to believe they are still One Nation Conservatives, simply because they say they are. They are not.

The Brexit Party won't stand any candidates in a Conservative held seat. But don't be surprised if there isn't more Non-Pact tactical stepping aside. This of course won't be a Pact. Cos the Brexit Party say its not. And the Conservative Party say its not.

The Liberal Democrats, Plaid and the Greens are in an electoral pact. They say they are in an electoral pact and have published a list.

Meanwhile the Labour Party isn't in a Pact. But there is still talk that in key seats that someone (either the LDs or Labour) should stand aside to try and deseat key Conservatives. This won't happen because the Lib Dems and Labour are not in a pact. And when they say they are not in a pact they aren't.

If after an election we have a hung parliament then either the Conservatives or Labour who are not in a pact and say they will never be in a pact, will try and woo someone to a kingmaker and be in government with them, probably on a supply and demand basis rather than coalition. They'll deny this but we kind of know how this goes...

The Wayne Bailey stuff actually cheered me up this morning.

Sostenueto · 12/11/2019 07:07

PMK and thanks Red.
So now the Tories are sending messages to the Hindu communities saying that Labour are anti Indian. I knew this campaign would be dirty but 😮

Steven Swinford@steven_swinford
Exclusive:

Labour published names of everyone who donated to party through website in recent days because of apparent security flaw

Data published on back end of website included first names & amount donated. In some cases full names were published

After The Times flagged that details of thousands of people donating to the party were being automatically published online the Labour Party removed data its website

BUT it is not reporting itself to the Information Commissioner despite the apparent data breach

Here's Professor Alan Woodward, a computer security expert at the University of Surrey, on the apparent data breach:

'This is totally unacceptable, it shouldn’t happen. Anyone with a browser can see the source code with a couple of clicks. It shouldn’t happen, it’s basic stuff.'

Election 2019: Security flaw leaves donors’ details online

The Times are wrong. Labour will be reporting itself to the Information Commissioner this morning...

There’s probably more to this disquieting finding than meets the eye. (Linked to earlier.)

More than half (58%) of 2016 Remain voters said they would rather have their way on Brexit than maintain the Union, while just under two-thirds (64%) of Leave voters said the same.

58% of Remain voters? It sounds bad but I wonder how the question was worded?
I’d have thought Remain voters could be thinking, “well having my way on Brexit would maintain the Union, so it’s not an either/or for me. I can safely select that and get both.”

Methinks that’s misleading.

The best thing about the Wayne Bayley story is that there are two of them on twitter, both claiming to be the real Wayne Bayley Grin.

Ellie56 · 12/11/2019 08:08

Wayne Bayley is not a happy bunny.

I will NOT be standing down due to some dodgy backroom deal. I will be standing as an Independent Brexit Party candidate.

The Conservatives are proven to not be able to deliver Brexit

lonelyplanetmum · 12/11/2019 08:14

Errr shouldn't that be an Independent Brexit candidate?

Not an Independent Brexit Party candidate.

HeyNotInMyName · 12/11/2019 08:18

@lonelyplanetmum, I think you can add a few things to your list

  • thinks it’s ok to run the NHS down and privatise it (whilst saying it isn’t)
  • it’s ok to have years austerity that leads to the untimely death of about 300.000 people, aka small town has just disappeared from the U.K.
  • it’s ok to walk over human rights when it comes to immigrants (see the way detention centres are running)
  • it’s also ok to kick out people who came with Windrush and ‘send them back to their country’. Never mind they thought they were BRITISH.
  • it’s ok to tell families that seeing your partner and Dcs through Skype is enough of a family life
  • it’s ok to use facial recognition even though it goes against fundamental rights to privacy etc... (and it’s nit working anyway, esp with BAME people)
  • it’s ok to put people life at risk to ‘remove red tape’ see Grenfell as the consequences of moving the fire checks from the fire brigade to landlords.

That’s just in the top of my head. I’m sure other people can add to your and my list :(

yolofish · 12/11/2019 08:18

morning all. Nothing useful to say, just waitng for the next car crash...

QueenOfThorns · 12/11/2019 08:21

More than half (58%) of 2016 Remain voters said they would rather have their way on Brexit than maintain the Union, while just under two-thirds (64%) of Leave voters said the same.

I don’t think this is disquieting, HesterThrale, it’s a bit meaningless. If presented with a binary choice, people have to pick an option, but no information is obtained on how strongly they feel about it, or their reasons for their choice.

If forced to choose between giving up cheese or chocolate for the rest of my life, I’d keep the cheese. It doesn’t mean that I actively want to give up chocolate!

Imagine if the question was ‘Who would you prefer to be PM: Boris Johnson or Jeremy Corbyn?’ If there were only the two choices, the results wouldn’t distinguish between active worshippers of the Magic Grandpa and people from the ‘anyone but Boris’ camp. So it would be a bit pointless, really.

lonelyplanetmum · 12/11/2019 08:24

Yes good points- HeyNotInMyName but why do increasing millions think all that is ok?

Is it superficial knowledge and failure to realise the Conservative party has changed. Or the age old (false) belief that something might be in it for them?

ListeningQuietly · 12/11/2019 08:29

On the breakfast radio today they were reading out funeral notices.
Its nice being out of the UK for a bit

Did anyone here know that the (Tory) government flogged off the UKs Government Pipeline and Storage System to a Spanish company back in 2015 for a song, and is now paying a Kings Ransom to rent it back ?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CLH_Pipeline_System#Privatisation:_CLH-PS

No, I didn't either.

HesterThrale · 12/11/2019 08:44

Yes QueenofThorns. That’s kind of the point I was making. Looks bad initially but Remain voters probably thought well, I can get Remain plus maintain the Union.

prettybird · 12/11/2019 08:53

The boys are more chilled out than me Grin

Thinking back to that strange and deliberate BBC decision to use old footage of BJ laying the wreath at the Cenotaph.....

Two (contradictory) ideas:

a) That BJ was deliberately scruffy because he actually wants to throw the election Shock The contrast with 2016 footage shows that he is capable of dressing smartly and of putting the wreath down correctly (actually, he's such an arrogant knob that the first time might have been chance as he didn't bother listening to instructions)

b) That the BBC producer did deliberately try to cover it up using 2016 footage (which has to have been deliberate Hmm) because they didn't want to see BJ embarrassed or misguidedly because they thought that his appearance and actions were disrespectful to the veterans but false news is even more wrong

I have no doubt that Ofcom will find against the BBC and the BBC will have to apologise - but that will be after the event, many months down the line Angry

This is probably good news. Email from the Women’s Equality Party, who are becoming a bit of a pressure group:

I wanted you to be the first to know that the Liberal Democrats have committed to our policies to end violence against women and girls! After months of negotiations, they are adding our policies to their general election manifesto.
-Sustainable funding of services for women fleeing violence
-MPs found guilty of abuse can be fired by their constituents
-Free childcare for all families from the end of parental leave until school age
We started this campaign by extending a hand to the other parties, offering to stand down if they took on our policies and helped to end the culture of impunity in Westminster.
Thanks to our campaign, Mark Field, Charlie Elphicke and Kelvin Hopkins have now resigned and the Lib Dems have committed to turning our policies into law. This is a HUGE success that demonstrates the power of doing politics differently.
That is why we will be standing down in Cities of London and Westminster and Sheffield Hallam and are reaching out to the Labour party, offering to do the same in Dover and Bury South.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2019 09:06

That is good news :)

There is a fundamental issue with nearly all liberal democracies ... their justice systems are reactive and can only work in hindsight. Meaning that a cynical actor can just do wrong and benefit from it before the legal system has a chance to swing into action. Look at the pantomime over the referendum for a start, and add in the denied voters to finish.

If the law is unable to cope, then people will simply ignore it. It starts at the top with big things. Like a fiddled referendum. And it corrodes down to smaller things like innocent families being attacked (and inevitable someone will get killed) because paedo-hunters feel equally justified in thumbing their noses at the law.
