Westminstenders: The Non-Pact Pact

The Brexit Party and the Conservatives have agreed a trumpian pact to no deal. Led by the ERG.

They don't want you to know its a pact because the Conservatives still want One Nation Conservatives types to believe they are still One Nation Conservatives, simply because they say they are. They are not.

The Brexit Party won't stand any candidates in a Conservative held seat. But don't be surprised if there isn't more Non-Pact tactical stepping aside. This of course won't be a Pact. Cos the Brexit Party say its not. And the Conservative Party say its not.

The Liberal Democrats, Plaid and the Greens are in an electoral pact. They say they are in an electoral pact and have published a list.

Meanwhile the Labour Party isn't in a Pact. But there is still talk that in key seats that someone (either the LDs or Labour) should stand aside to try and deseat key Conservatives. This won't happen because the Lib Dems and Labour are not in a pact. And when they say they are not in a pact they aren't.

If after an election we have a hung parliament then either the Conservatives or Labour who are not in a pact and say they will never be in a pact, will try and woo someone to a kingmaker and be in government with them, probably on a supply and demand basis rather than coalition. They'll deny this but we kind of know how this goes...

I'd expect Corbyn to resign if the Tories win a majority, but he might or might not if there is a hung Parliament

Curtice confirms that talk of a Labour majority is fantasy,
imo just scare tactics by Tories worried about the possibility of a hung Parliament

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2019 20:29

We also commented several times about getting the Brunel Uni students to help vote out BJ,
for those who missed the Uxbridge election literature

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2019 20:31

Also parachuting something the size of BJ into another constituency is something that could not have been kept secret for days or be done in the final couple of days

Really was a known fact

DrBlackbird · 14/11/2019 20:40

Anything that prevents a tory majority is fine by me

Ditto... but don't know if I'm deluding myself.

ListeningQuietly · 14/11/2019 20:46

DO NOT trust Wikipedia for candidates - check the elections page of your local council
I've checked 5 and Wiki has been wrong on every single one

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2019 21:04

Oh, that's important to know, listening

So much inaccuracy & carelessness in sources that people trust to be independent:
BBC so often, now wiki Confused

We must try to check everything with 2nd sources .... but they often just copy each other, errors & all !

Peregrina · 14/11/2019 21:50

I was on holiday the other week so maybe heard this on BBC World, but one commentator categorically said that they knew after the election either Corbyn or Johnson would resign. I thought to myself, not necessarily - they might both resign, or neither might resign. Corbyn really only has to hold the number of seats he has, maybe get one or two more, and he's done better than expected. If Johnson hangs on, as the largest party, but without a majority, I can't see him resigning voluntarily.

TatianaLarina · 14/11/2019 21:51

We've all said how shit Corbyn is - um, ok poster hasn't !

Not specifically talking about this thread - more generally. But there a couple of Corbyn fans here.

I think Remain needs democratic representation. And there are so many problems with a PV that being anti it doesn’t bother me. I’m anti it myself other than as a potential avenue to Remain and a last resort.

ArseDarkly · 14/11/2019 22:02

Peregrina I like Corbyn but he would have to go if they don't win - given how terrible the Tories have been and how well-received many Labour policies are it could only be an indictment of him personally if they can't persuade voters to back them.

He's 70 after all and his long history in politics makes him a siting duck for smear campaigns. Personally I think Labour are long overdue a female leader

Headlines on 13th Dec

given how terrible the Tories have been and how well-received many Labour policies were it was an indictment of him personally that they couldn’t persuade voters to back them.

Peregrina · 14/11/2019 22:19

Any Labour leader with the possible exception of Blair (Tory Lite) is a sitting duck for smear campaigns. As are other party leaders when it looks as though they might get within a whisker of success.

I too think that Labour are long overdue a female leader.

ArseDarkly · 14/11/2019 22:20

Oh camenbert, at least wait til it happens before starting the gloomfest!

ArseDarkly · 14/11/2019 22:26

Yes, they put the boot in hard on Milliband as well even though he was as centrist as they come, There is a lot more ammunition with an old campaigner like Corbyn. However, I think the prevalence of that kind of dirty tactics means they are less and less effective.

TiddleTaddleTat · 15/11/2019 08:30

Just caught some of Naga manchetty interviewing BJ on BBC breakfast. She was good !!

prettybird · 15/11/2019 13:32

Just watching BBC's election item from Aberdeen (or more accurately, Banff & Buchan, which is a marginal Conservative/SNP constituency). They didn't interview a single person under 40 (maybe even 50, if I'm generous and they looked young for their age Wink) Hmm

thewomanontheshore · 15/11/2019 14:59

Why are the BBC only interviewing older people? Are they simply sucking up to the Tories because they're afraid about funding cuts?

DGRossetti · 15/11/2019 15:39

Why are the BBC only interviewing older people

They might have to change that policy, now they've accidentally found older remainers ....
