Westminstenders: The Non-Pact Pact

The Brexit Party and the Conservatives have agreed a trumpian pact to no deal. Led by the ERG.

They don't want you to know its a pact because the Conservatives still want One Nation Conservatives types to believe they are still One Nation Conservatives, simply because they say they are. They are not.

The Brexit Party won't stand any candidates in a Conservative held seat. But don't be surprised if there isn't more Non-Pact tactical stepping aside. This of course won't be a Pact. Cos the Brexit Party say its not. And the Conservative Party say its not.

The Liberal Democrats, Plaid and the Greens are in an electoral pact. They say they are in an electoral pact and have published a list.

Meanwhile the Labour Party isn't in a Pact. But there is still talk that in key seats that someone (either the LDs or Labour) should stand aside to try and deseat key Conservatives. This won't happen because the Lib Dems and Labour are not in a pact. And when they say they are not in a pact they aren't.

If after an election we have a hung parliament then either the Conservatives or Labour who are not in a pact and say they will never be in a pact, will try and woo someone to a kingmaker and be in government with them, probably on a supply and demand basis rather than coalition. They'll deny this but we kind of know how this goes...

I think Curtice is saying pretty much what most of us on these threads have been saying.

Oakenbeach · 14/11/2019 18:20

Ps I wouldn’t actually be happy with it, more that
it would be the least worst option.

Peregrina · 14/11/2019 18:25

Curtice said: “Boris Johnson would love the Liberal Democrats to go up.”

Only in currently held Labour seats. He wouldn't like it if places in the South East, currently Tory, fell to them.

ListeningQuietly · 14/11/2019 18:26

Greetings from the Emerald Isle
It was interesting crossing the border multiple times today and seeing the election posters, slogans and viewpoints.
A joyous total lack of Labour, Tory or Libdem Grin

Mistigri · 14/11/2019 18:29

I think Curtice is saying pretty much what most of us on these threads have been saying.

Interesting to see that he sees it as a toss up between a Tory overall majority implying odds of 50% (which was my guesstimate earlier).

Also interesting to see that he's put a number on the lead below which the Tories need to worry seriously about not getting a majority.

dreichwinter · 14/11/2019 18:31

I think I agree with @Oakenbeach a hung parliament which cannot create a government. Followed by a new Labour leader and another election doesn't sound too terrible. ( on the assumption that a sane Labour leader is picked)

Hoooo · 14/11/2019 18:32

Anything that prevents a tory majority is fine by me

WhatwouldJessicaJonesdo · 14/11/2019 18:33

Horrendous surface water flooding around our way today. Was just thinking imagine we had no dealed 31 Oct and all the chaos of that, plus the floods on top!

Hoooo · 14/11/2019 18:34

Pretty bad here too

Ds1 still not home (worries)

Alsohuman · 14/11/2019 18:34

And me.

Bearbehind · 14/11/2019 18:39

Anything that prevents a tory majority is fine by me

But pretty much any scenario outside of a Tory majority leads to a cobbled together government that can’t actually get anything through or another GE

That hasn’t exactly been proven to work well has it?

Mistigri · 14/11/2019 18:39

Anything that prevents a tory majority is fine by me

Amen.

Praying that the fat gormless idiot loses his seat. He won't but I am allowed my one single personal unicorn after four fucking years of this shit.

Same here but - there's still a month to go and that's 4 x a long time in politics.

New thread.

A hung parliament begs the question of do leaders stay and fight or resign though...

Especially if another election is liable. A leader who can't win an election isn't an asset...

I'm sharing this from twitter with no comment.

  • I'm lying.
Mistigri · 14/11/2019 18:46

Fuck sake mumsnet and your 1990s technology!

Spoiled my joke.

Anyway, one guess.

BestIsWest · 14/11/2019 18:49

Ooh, Lab, Con, Lib, PC and BXP in my constituency. Lab Marginal with strong remain MP.

I think that if we can't prevent it Johnson losing his seat wouldn't be a bad booby prize.

ArseDarkly · 14/11/2019 19:07

Sure they must have agonised about Johnson standing in Uxbridge, maybe they decided it would look too bad if he stood elsewhere but they don't usually seem to care whether stuff looks bad or not.

Maybe they've got some other plan up their grubby sleeves..

MyNameIsArthur · 14/11/2019 19:49

I would hope that if Labour lost the election, Corbyn would resign. In fact if he resigned now, maybe he would be doing Labour a favour

Butterymuffin · 14/11/2019 20:18

Too late for Corbyn to resign now the election's on. Afterwards, think he would have to accept he's had his chance now. Though that still leaves the question of succession to be settled.

And yes, Johnson being unseated would be something. It still burns me that after all he's done, he will now get to say he made it to his dream job, given the far worthier people historically who'd have made better PMs. But the best way to mitigate that would be to remove him asap. Totally unfit for the office.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2019 20:19

"And what a surprise, Boris is standing for election in ......... "

I posted a photo of his Uxbridge election literature last week
So those of us who were reading the thread knew that he would stand in Uxbridge

Bearbehind · 14/11/2019 20:22

Fucking hell.

Most of us don’t have time to keep up with every post.

That one was beyond harsh 🤔

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2019 20:23

"I’m not comfortable with any whitewashing of Labour’s severe problems just because there’s no alternative. There seems to be a lot of well they’re almost Remain because of the PV, "

We've all said how shit Corbyn is - um, ok poster hasn't !

A PV with Remain is fine for me
I would accept a soft Brexit without a PV

The Ldems are entitled to put Revoke without PV as a policy, but it is not the choice I think best to bring the country together.
