Westminstenders: The end of tribalism

There are signs that traditional party alignment might well have broken.

The Tories have split, labour are pretending they have not.

The pattern so far seems to be closely following the EU. This favours a Tory majority.

A long way to go.

Daily Mirror

says that flooded communities in South Yorkshire have been left devastated,
as the majority of the flood defence budget is spent in the south of the country.

The Independent

calls Farage's decision to withdraw 317 candidates from Conservative-held seats a "truce",
and reports that Labour candidates are pushing for Corbyn to cooperate with other Remain parties.

DailyMail

Claims Farage's election truce with the Conservatives is "not enough" and the BXP should also stand down in key Labour seats.

I think in a lot of Labour seats the Brexit party is just as likely to siphon off some Tory votes. Still I hope this is the end of Farage.

Pretty I didn't agree with the threshold as a % of eligible votes

  • the 40% was Labour shamelessly trying to rig the vote, to keep their then Scottish fortress.

A threshold should only be on votes actually cast - if you cba to vote, then you choose to accept what others decide.
imo, an independent Scotland needs about a 60% vote for such a massive change
It shouldn't even attempt it on a 52:48

However, not being Scottish, maybe I should stfu and let the Scottish Parliament decide on that !
(imo, the Scottish Parliament, not Westminster, should decide the terms & conditions of the ref)

To be fair on Callaghan - he wasn't in favour of the threshold - iirc, it was Labour rebels in cahoots with the Tories under Thatcher (who promised a different form of home rule that never materialised surprise surprise Hmm) who got the threshold vote through, with the SNP saying that if it did, and the referendum was then "lost", they would then support a VoNC.

So in his memoir, he doesn't blame the SNP for losing that vote which then ushered in 18 years of Conservative rule - he blames the rebels for creating that situation. (plus there was the "new" Labour chief whip who didn't believe in keeping the key DUP MP "sweet" with generous glasses of whisky or something like that Wink)

Personally, I think NS, through Brexit circumstances, is going for Indyref2 sooner than she would have like (polls still at or around 50:50). I went to her adoption meeting in 2015(?) (in the run up to the Scottish Parliament elections) and I remember her saying she doesn't like losing (who does? Wink) and that she'd want the polls to be showing as much as 60:40 (she might just have said "a consistent majority") before taking it back for the full Indyref2. She also said she didn't want Scotland to be divided down the middle.

This was before the EU Referendum result and the Brexit clusterfuck that has played out since then Shock

General election: Anger from Brexit Party candidates as they are stood down

Didn't take long for him to fuck up this party too

Maybe we should hope he joins the Tory party !

"All that Farage has exposed is his duplicity to so many supporters who had put their faith in him. He and you are a disgrace to politics!"
.....
"A hung parliament for sure! Nigel has let us down very badly just as he did with UKIP remember!

"I shall be spoiling my ballot paper for the first time in my adult life! There is not a decent honest politician in parliament!"

It's understood members paid £100 to be considered for a seat, and it is not yet clear if those who will be stood down will get a refund.
< 😂 That's Farage laughing all the way to the bank >

I just scrolled down the tactical voting compare website and I have to say I was heartened to see that they do appear to be relatively in tune with each other.

Best for Britain seems to be the biggest outlier - suggesting lib dems over labour in seats where Lib Dems barely polled last time, so unless they are in agreement with at least one other tactical site I would ignore their advice. They also don't seem to like the SNP

In seats where it's a Lib/Lab marginal and the tories a distant third they mostly seem to agree that you can vote whichever way you want (either way a remain/ 2nd ref party gets in - so go with your heart). And similarly where the tories are way out in front they all seem to agree that you can vote for whoever (sadly this time because you won't unseat the tory - no mater how coordinated you are).

All seemed very pragmatic. The comparative website just needs the hell sharing out of it - because the results do seem to speak for themselves.

....and the rest. I employed a full time campaign coordinator last week on a 2 month contract which has cost me thousands. I also have an outbuilding FULL of Brexit Party leaflets and signs ready for next weeks launch.

Nigel owes me over TEN GRAND.*

Shame, isn’t it?

ArseDarkly · 12/11/2019 00:16

Farage stated on Eddie Mair LBC show earlier that 'candidates' would not get a refund and their money would go towards the overall campaign. Swindling arse, I hope they sue him.
