Parliament has formally been dissolved. We are now officially in an election period including purdah and spending limits. Not that all the parties haven't got campaign material out already to bypass the rules, making the rules a complete farce. And the government has made some very dodgy adverts about the fund for towns, 90% of which just happen to be marginals.

The Tory Campaign has got off to an interesting start with a dead cat dog whistle against Grenfell where many well educated people lived (Inc an architect), privately owned their property and just happened to be white. And fast asleep. I'm not sure about you but I don't tend to have huge amounts of 'common sense' when I'm snoring.

Apologies have of course been made. In true Trumpian / Bannon style. But the whistle was blown and made its desired point to its target audience. Expect many more examples before we get to the end of this campaign.

Of course the same day it was made public that the government have blocked the publication of a report into Russian Electoral Interference. Which is in no way connected to the massive amount of donations the Tory Party has been receiving lately and who Boris Johnson hangs out with.

This election is all about breaking 'The Red Wall' and the Tories taking Northern seats. So everyone between Birmingham and Cumbria is going to be particularly fed up by 12th December at people from London coming out with ridiculous stereotypes, and telling them how to vote. We await Corbyn and Johnson adopting flat caps and vowels whilst drinking a pint of bitter or mild.

As usual we've had the candidate selection process throw up a few curve balls including forcing cabinet minister Alun Cairns to resign as Welsh Secretary on the day the tories launch their campaign. Its become very clear from the list of Tory MPs who aren't standing that the party has officially split and 'one nation conservatism' is merely now a slogan Johnson throws around to pretend that the hard right of the party hasn't slung out or forced out all the moderates. On the Labour side we have the usual rows at factions in local parties fighting or being really upset at a London candidate being parachuted in.

Farage isn't standing but the Brexit Party apparently is, despite calls for an electoral pact with the Tories. Whether local parties get the memo from Leave.eu and CCHQ we will find out in time. The LDs, Greens and Plaid seem to be consolidating a Remain pact in some seats but this still splits the vote with Labour which will be a problem in some areas.

Johnson is apparently standing in Uxbridge. This does leave us with the possibility he could yet lose his seat. Swinson's seat is also far from a safe one. Corbyn will likely be safe but Islington did back the LDs as the 1st Party at the Euros with the assistance of some very pissed off Labour members.

Nothing is certain about the next 6 weeks apart from the fact it will throw up some shocks and leave us all shouting at the telly at some point.

Well, I have always loved elections, but this really is such a shitshow. I don’t know what will happen. I don’t even know what I would like to happen, beyond that I would really really like everyone to tell the truth and to stay civil. And I would love it if the report into Russian influence got leaked....

bellinisurge · 06/11/2019 21:32

My tuxie cat is currently in stealth mode because her white eyebrow has fallen out.
I'm not sure I can face this either.

yolofish · 06/11/2019 21:46

a tits up PMK from me, one cat outside in the rain and wont come in, two others prowling the house and dog comatose. Think they are all hiding from electioneering!

TiddleTaddleTat · 06/11/2019 21:56

Watchint today's andrew Neil interview with Nadhim Zadawi. Absolutely toe-curling!!

bellini Shock

BercowsPoliticalPumpkin · 06/11/2019 21:59

Borrowed cat was yowling at the front door before 7am this morning. I've been out all day so he came in again tonight expressing his displeasure. Curled up on DD's bed, went back out (for a wee perhaps), then flew back in like a greased lightning for a bit of a fuss before abandoning us again. Presumably for a house that gives him food. He did eat a cold chip off the floor 🤢 He is very calMing when he comes in and settles down. He purrs forever and is lovely company when he deigns to grace us with his presence. He's perfect for us as he's not ours to be responsible for or feed but ours enough to love and fuss over. He is much loved and helps my blood pressure and anxiety when deadlines are approaching and Boris is borising.

tobee · 06/11/2019 22:01

Spoke to my first canvasser today.

Libdem; said I was going to vote tactically to keep the Tories out. Said I'm not a natural LibDem. Apparently, their local poll that they'll release tonight will be favourable to voting LibDem tactically. I would have said "well, you would say that, wouldn't you?" but she looked about 12 and so I just gave her a Paddington hard stare instead.

Ducked out of confronting on self ID too I'm afraid. Feeble of me.

HesterThrale · 06/11/2019 22:06

Nadhim Zahawi was on C4 News too - another poor interview. He was rattled.

They have very few ministers they can send out at the moment to reliably paper over the cracks.

Maybe we’ll see more Independents if the two parties get more extreme? Although an Independent in Watson’s constituency is George Galloway. No thanks.

Nearly ran over George Galloway once when he was campaigning and jaywalking in a by-election in Hillhead......

He is an extremely odious man. Didn't realise back then just how odious Sad.....Wink

derxa · 06/11/2019 22:24

Mr Johnson described Parliament as an "anaconda that has swallowed a tapir, neither moving one way or the other." I know you all hate BJ but I love this analogy.

HesterThrale · 06/11/2019 22:25

@NickCohen4
The good people are walking away from politics. The next House of Commons will be the Parliament of freaks

Just watched the Nadhim Zahawi car crash interview. Shock I'm glad that Neil stuck with the Corbyn Stalin comparison on taxes and business. But I was greedily also wishing he could have said about Johnson saying "fuck business"

tobee · 06/11/2019 22:31

Don't think HIGNFY will be going off air. But it will be under extra scrutiny for balance and might have to change previously booked guests to make sure enough leavers etc.

borntobequiet · 06/11/2019 22:35

Anaconda/tapir thing not original. Am I surprised? Not really

PMK with the happy news that my sister's cat has come to stay with me, unexpectedly, for a few days. She is currently sleeping in the armchair and looking beeeaautiful!

... the bunnies are less than impressed.

prettybird · 06/11/2019 22:48

I'm thinking more and more that the UK is going to follow the downward path that Argentina embarked on in the early 20th century: dropping from one of the top 10 economies in the world to limping along with repeated debt defaults and bailouts from the IMF - and never getting back to even close o its previous economic status, nearly 100 years later.

I think it was BCF who first pointed it out (or was it DGR?)

When you look into it, there are some uncomfortable parallels (and in many respects Argentina started off with a better base due to having plenty of its own natural resources): poor political choices (or juntas), leading to protectionism, leading to a viscous circle of political instability (or juntas) and a failing economy. Sad

Pretty I'm of the opinion that the cabinet and shadow cabinet are increasingly of a level where they would struggle to organise a piss up in a brewery.

Experts have had enough of the public...

I don't think the reference came from that book, borntobequiet.

There is a video on Youtube from the Discovery Channel showing the regurgitation of a tapir.

The video says it's a hippo but it looks like a tapir and anacondas only live in South America.

Broadlands - Norfolk. Nick Conrad. Said women should keep knickers on to prevent rape.
Dover - Kent. Charlie Elphicke. Suspended from Tory Party and standing on trial for alleged sexual assault and rape but local Tory looking to find a way to support him and not stand an official Tory Party candidate
Vale of Glamorgan - Wales. Alun Cairns. Forced to resign from cabinet amid investigation into how much he knew about his former aide sabotaging a rape court case.

This is not a great look...

An official announcement will be made in central London on Thursday.

Arfon - Plaid
Dwyfor Meirionydd - Plaid

Doesn't mention the other 5 constituencies but Greens get free run at least one.

prettybird I think taking a comparative look at Argentina, and us, is quite instructive.

Not that many would, for a second, deign to look for parallels is South America, hey? I mean, they're not like us, at ALL, are they?... 🧐
