Westministenders: The weasel DIDN'T die in a ditch

The EU has decided to grant the UK's request for an extension until 31 January.

This will be a "flextension",
i.e. if the WA is approved by the UK and EU Parliaments before that date, then we will leave earlier.

and .... despite all his blustering promises, the weasel BJ lives on,
preening his whiskers in self-love.

The more gullible Brexiters haven't yet twigged that he lies and lies.
And lies....

Meanwhile, another attempt by the UK to decide what to do:

From 2:30 pm today, MPs will debate whether to allow a GE on 12 December

This is a govt motion under the FTPA, which means BJ requires the votes of â…” of all MPs - that's 434

Hence he would need Labour support.

BJ's condition for a GE on this date is that MPs agree to pass the WA / WAB by 7 November,
which is the last day before Parliament would be automatically dissolved before the GE.

Corbyn said he'll only agree to a GE if BJ takes No Deal off the table.
This cannot be made legally binding, but as noone would take the word of a lying weasel, it is difficult for this condition to be satisfied.

Polls suggest that a GE after Brexit would be likely to give the Tories significantly more votes & seats than a GE before.
Both Labour & Tory want to game GE timing to their advantage.

Also, most Labour MPs are opposed to a GE after Brexit, for fear of losing the votes of millions of angry Labour Remainers - and their own seats.

A few on the Labour left do want a GE asap,
but Nick Brown, Labour’s chief whip, has warned Corbyn that many MPs would disobey orders to vote for 12 December.

Hence, BJ is expected to lose yet another HoC vote.
If so, reports suggest that the Cabinet are split over what to do next:

Some ministers, e.g. Gavin Williamson, want to agree to the SNP / LDem proposal to hold a GE on 9 December.

This would be via an amendment to the FTPA or a separate 1-line Act
and hence would require only a simple majority of MPs present
It would also be the last chance logistically for a GE before mid-February.
BUT
would require BJ to abandon attempts to pass the WAB before this.

Also, such a bill would be amendable and Tories fear the type of amendments could be added
e.g. a CU, or votes for 16-year-olds.

Hence other ministers and the Tory chairman James Cleverley oppose this idea.

It is unknown how BJ will decide.
His record is of aggressive bluster, then caving in at the last moment, while pretending he has won.

The EU have saved our bacon yet again, but may be running out of eye rolls "Please don't waste this time"

I wonder how the electorate will feel with the early Xmas TV schedules being tanked for party political broadcast and debate over Morecambe and Wise repeats.

Will Boris "no show" Johnson emulate Theresa May, and send someone else in his stead ?

Will satirists be able to resist the temptation to use fruitcakes as a metaphor.

Is anyone else getting as giddy and excited as me ?

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 29/10/2019 12:26

oh I'm not sure on postal votes. She can register in both but only vote at one so in theory she could apply for a postal vote in both areas so long as she only voted once. But I could be wrong on that and maybe she can only apply to postal vote in one of the constituencies

Icantreachthepretzels · 29/10/2019 12:30

If there is going to be a Christmas election then labour need to lean hard on the Christmas angle

5 more years of tory austerity? Happy Fucking Christmas!

Picture of BJ dressed like scrooge there's no ghost of Christmas past coming to stop him selling off the NHS

Icantreachthepretzels · 29/10/2019 12:33

Anyone with students - make sure they and their friends know that they can drop in to the polling station and hand in a postal vote on the day, so if they will be in the constituency with their postal vote at the time of the election, they don't have to rely on the post.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2019 12:34

https://www.fenland.gov.uk/article/10218/My-sondaughter-is-a-student-living-away-from-home-do-I-need-to-register-himher

Students are allowed to register in more than one place

They do not need to be removed from the register at home, even if they have registered at their university address.

Students are eligible to vote in local elections if registered in two areas,
but can by law only vote once in Parliamentary elections.

I sorted postal votes for dh and I when an October election was requested.

It's my understanding we can fill them in amd take them to the polling station, though?

NoWordForFluffy · 29/10/2019 12:44

Yes, you can do that. You could also drop them by hand into your Council office before the election.

NoWordForFluffy · 29/10/2019 12:45

(As in the address on the envelope.)

BeaBravo · 29/10/2019 12:45

Idiotic LibDems attacking Labour on R2 and Politics Live. I despair. At least Corbyn is looking chipper.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/10/2019 12:47

OhLook she can choose to ask for a postal vote in both places. It's just that with the timings being exactly around when her university stop for Christmas it's tricky.

If it arrives early enough then it's much better that it goes to her university address. If it's to arrive after she gets back (the 6th) then it's better for it to arrive here, but it's a really tight turn around.

Her compromise is to ask for a postal vote being sent to her university address and hope it arrives in time. If it doesn't, I guess she's a bit stuffed anyway, but she can ask around and try and find a trusted proxy voter.

I'd travel down for her to take her vote down on the day, but I suspect I'll be at a polling station turning blue. As she's away she can't do it herself. I guess though I could travel down the day before and take it to her council. (it's only a five hour round trip Wink )

I know pragmatically it's just one vote, but we are both bloody determined to make sure it arrives.

Corbyn has said he's backing a December election - this is fantastic news! Finally we the public have the chance to STOP BREXIT once and for all!

Basilpots · 29/10/2019 12:52

UK Poll of Polls, 25 Oct 2019

Con: 36% (32%-40%)
Lab: 25% (22%-29%)
LD: 18% (15%-21%)
Brx: 10% (8%-14%)
Grn: 5% (4%-6%)
SNP: 5% (3%-6%)

Luckily I don’t have to this one has a ‘range’ Grin

But my own completely in scientific findings over the past month make it an 8 point lead for those interested.

I don’t want an election the thought of daily polling makes me Shock

NoWordForFluffy · 29/10/2019 12:54

Your postal vote will only be posted to the address you're registered to, I think (maybe).

She can just vote in the place she's in though. Unless she's desperate to vote in one or the other places. Then she'll have to work out the logistics.

FWIW, our postal votes tend to come at least 2 weeks beforehand. If you're desperate to vote in one place or another, you can use Special Delivery which is guaranteed next day to get it to you and back again. Probably cheaper than travelling in most cases!

JustAnotherPoster00 · 29/10/2019 12:55

Basil as resident pollmeister you're going to be worked to death Grin

JustAnotherPoster00 · 29/10/2019 12:56

So election in December is NOT done & dusted.
All hinges on votes for EU nationals and 16 to 17 year olds...
If that amendment passes Gov is likely to pull the Bill.
If it doesn't pass then Lab and ALL opposition parties expected to remove support
Upshot Boris loses either way

QueenOfThorns · 29/10/2019 12:59

pretzels or Fluffy, do you have to hand the postal vote in yourself, or can someone else do it for you? I’m trying to find a way around the fact that I can’t use DH as a proxy vote because he’s (probably) not eligible to vote himself.

cloudydaysinautumn · 29/10/2019 13:03

Anyone can hand the postal vote in. I always hand dhs in, either at the polling station or the council office

QueenOfThorns · 29/10/2019 13:05

That’s great, thank you @cloudydaysinautumn

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/10/2019 13:07

Does someone knowledgable want to start a separate student and absent voters q&a thread? It's info that needs to be easily accessible for everyone.

Basilpots · 29/10/2019 13:09

I need a bigger calculator Just Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 29/10/2019 13:09

Ok, you can have your postal vote sent elsewhere, you just need to do another application with the address.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2019 13:10

You've just volunteered for that, Kitten Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/10/2019 13:15
