Westministenders: Sub-Prime Minister at large

BigChocFrenzy · 25/10/2019 13:24

Our Sub-Prime Minister BJ is threatening a govt tantrum strike until he is allowed his Haribo GE on 12 December.

If MPs vote for a GE, he has promised them "more time" to debate the WAB,
but that would only be from 29 October to 7 November

  • ridiculously inadequate for such complex legislation -
before Parliament is automatically dissolved for the 25 sitting days before a GE.

The GE debate starts Monday 2:30 pm in the HoC
Corbyn says he'll agree to a GE if BJ takes No Deal off the table

BUT wIth this WA,
No deal cannot 100% be taken off the table whilst the Tories are in office:

they could still No Deal after transition ends on 31 December 2020,
if they don't request a transition by July.

We don't know when the EU will give their decision on an extension, or what it will be:

The EU may decide only after the HoC vote
- in which case MPs would be voting "blindly"

Tusk, Merkel & most other leaders want to grant the Flextension until 31 January,
but Macron & a few others want to give a short extension of only 2-4 weeks, to pressure MPs to pass the WA in November

  • in which case the GE would take place shortly after Brexit, which would be a gift to BJ.

A 12 December GE would also cause serious logistical problems for local council officials:

Apart from their poll station bookings clashing with Xmas bookings for church halls & schools,

they are legally required to send out all the polling cards based on the current electoral roll,
then at the GE, check names against the new electoral roll which must be updated on 1 December

The Rebel Alliance want a long extension, so they have time to add amendments to the WAB,
e.g. a CU, the Level Playing Field agreement in May's WA, maybe even a PV
So many may want to vote against a GE before that ..... but what does Corbyn want ?

BJ as PM could still change the date of any GE after he has agreed to it, if it suits him.

What does BJ want ?
Alice Cooper said it:

"I'm your top prime cut of meat, I'm your choice
I wanna be elected
I'm your yankee doodle dandy in a gold Rolls Royce
I wanna be elected
Kids want a savior, don't need a fake
I wanna be elected
We're all gonna rock to the rules that I make
I wanna be elected, elected, elected..."

YEA!!!! Bercows is a happy bunny today!

TheMShip · 28/10/2019 09:45

So Macron has not saved BJ's bacon. Quelle surprise.

OublietteBravo · 28/10/2019 09:46

On the grounds that I’m usually out of the country when anything significant happens in relation to Brexit, I’m expecting further developments on 17/18 November or 3 to 7 December Wink

Basilpots · 28/10/2019 10:04

On the grounds that Brexit seems determined to ruin somebody’s birthday/anniversary in the Basil house I can concur with those dates Oub Grin

Peachi82 · 28/10/2019 10:06

I'm so glad with the 3 months. For now. I was so worried over the last days.

QueenOfThorns · 28/10/2019 10:11

I predict a GE on the 9th because I’ll probably be on a plane! A proxy vote might be complicated (DH can’t do it for me because he’s forrin), but if I applied for a postal vote, does anyone know whether he could hand that in at the polling station for me? I don’t trust the return post.

Ellie56 · 28/10/2019 10:13

So Macron has not saved BJ's bacon. No he hasn't. Grin

Will our petulant twat PM have another tantrum?

Oakenbeach · 28/10/2019 10:17

You don't have to vote for something - especially something you don't actually believe in - just because some other people voted for it three years ago. (If that were true there would be no point in any GE - we would always have to vote for whoever won last time). You should vote for what you honestly think is best in the here and now.

I believe following through on the referendum result is the least worst option available. If Labour won a GE before Brexit had been delivered, it would seek to deliver a “final say” referendum that would be anything but a final say... they would put a Brexit-in-name-only against a Remain option that would have no validity for a large number of voters who want a real Brexit (I think those voters are misguided in wanting that but it doesn’t change the fact).... Any result will lack any legitimacy and we’ll descend even deeper into political crisis.

I don’t necessarily want 5 years of Tory Government, but if others parties are only promising something that will ultimately descend the UK into even more chaos then the Tories look like be best bet. It would be far better if the WA was passed, the boil lanced, and we could then have a proper debate about out future relationship with the EU at a GE.... Having a GE whilst we’re still in the EU will ensure the debate is drowned out, like it or not.

Ellie56 · 28/10/2019 10:18

MN why is there no edit button?

Oakenbeach · 28/10/2019 10:20

Also, if I voted Labour, and the Tories won a GE - or vice versa - and I was then asked to vote on whether the country should honour the GE result, I would do so. It’s the same logic with the referendum.

Bearbehind · 28/10/2019 10:24

If they go with the fixed date GE option vote today JC really can’t vote against that can he? (Even though it only needs a simple majority therefore doesn’t need Labour support)

What possible reason would he have for not supporting it if that date was determined and we know we have the flexstension?

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 28/10/2019 10:26

What time does the fun kick off in the HoC today? I'm actually looking forward to bozo's tantrum Grin

Dontlickthetrolley · 28/10/2019 10:27

Oub and Basil I don't want Brexit to spoil my birthday this year or any year so the December dates for any further developments are good for me Grin

placemats · 28/10/2019 10:29

Bear and Oaken

What ever happened to fixed term Parliaments?

Oh, wait, MPs are allowed to change their mind. They can cross the floor, stand as an independent.

But Joe/Joanna public isn't allowed to do this. Referendum is set in stone and that's that. Changed your mind? Tough!

placemats · 28/10/2019 10:30

From 3.30pm onward (likely outcome around 5pm)

Bearbehind · 28/10/2019 10:31

placemats I don’t disagree that it’s wrong but it’s where we are.

There’s not point in wishing for what’s not possible

BigChocFrenzy · 28/10/2019 10:31

The reports I've read are that the Cabinet are split over accepting the SNP / LDem proposal of a 9 Dec GE
It is not known if BJ has decided yet what to do

TheMShip · 28/10/2019 10:31

Will there be any SO24 attempts today on any topics?

borntobequiet · 28/10/2019 10:33

Well my European break next week should be OK..I normally go on holiday to somewhere sunny in November with DD as it's just after her birthday and her SAD kicks in badly after the clocks go back.
Had paid for flights and apartment can be cancelled up to Nov 1st, but held off on airport parking and currency until now.

Bearbehind · 28/10/2019 10:34

I’d read that they’re not planning on accepting it as the SNP / Lib Dem proposal, in true fuckwit style, they’re planning on making it their idea!

BigChocFrenzy · 28/10/2019 10:36

I've been looking for SO24 applications too, Mship

BJ needs the support of Labour to pass the 12 December GE, which looks v unlikely.

So it's about what happens then

This is a cynical and shit plan. slaps Conservative branding on it This is a wonderful plan

Bearbehind · 28/10/2019 10:39

Not for some Leavers but they’re not going to get what they want either

BigChocFrenzy · 28/10/2019 10:40

Yep, if BJ adopts the 9 Dec idea, then he'll probably claim it as a great personal victory

Rather like caving in to a permanent NI frontstop was presented as the EU conceding on the backstop.

That slurping sound you hear is USA, China, India & 100 smaller countries all licking their lips over how they are going to roast BJ in trade negotiations
