Westminstenders: Super Saturday

Parliament sits on a Saturday for the first time since the Falklands.

A deal has been reached with the EU. Its utterly shite and worse for the UK than May's deal. It even leaves no deal as an option after transition.

The DUP don't like it. They got predictably shafted.

Tomorrow is a debate and vote on the deal. Amendments are key, in particular the Letwin amendment which seeks to close a loophole in the Benn Act and stop the Deal being adopted tomorrow, instead forcing the ultimate decision over the deal to a later date and forcing an extension.

Which the EU may or may not agree to.

There is also talk of forcing another ref via amendments but this, unlike the Letwin amendment is unlikely to pass.

The vote tomorrow looks to be very tight. The Letwin amendment passes looks likely to make Johnson fail to have the numbers. However there is talk that enough Labour MPs have decided to back the deal.

There is also a big anti Brexit march in London tomorrow (which runs the risk of having problems with the Extinction Rebellion ban). Good luck to everyone going tomorrow.

See you on the other side (which might now be on this thread!!)

But if they bring the WAIB, can't an amendment be attached which allows a vote on both TM's WA and BoZo's?

Is it actually possible to bring back TM's WA? I'm assuming as it's a new term they can?

Basilpots · 19/10/2019 11:04

Brexit Sec @SteveBarclay just admitted on @BBCNews that the Govt. hasn’t done any detailed economic impact assessment of the new Brexit Deal: “We’ve only had two days”.

Perfect.Angry

fedup21 · 19/10/2019 11:04

TM’s WA was voted down three times. Would it be as undemocratic to bring that back for another go, as to have another referendum?

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 19/10/2019 11:05

Mini bercows who is 4 has just asked: "is that the prime minister? Does he tell
Lots of lies?" He's not daft my ds!

BlackeyedGruesome · 19/10/2019 11:07

Ds has hated him for years, Bercow.

prettybird · 19/10/2019 11:08

Basilpots - that's why dh came up with FUKD the day after the EU Referendum: the Formerly United Kingdom and its Dependencies. It certainly seems apt Sad

This contrasts with the term "rUK" that was used during the Indyref (remainder of the UK).

wheresmymojo · 19/10/2019 11:09

I'm out and about this morning but will be back on the thread this afternoon.

In the meantime - I've finished the book 'Travellers in the Third Reich' that a few people on here recommended.

Would anyone like it? Happy to post it on for free...

Oakenbeach · 19/10/2019 11:10

If there was a VONC and the DUP refused to support the government woyld the vote succeed ? Could the DUP cancel out those rebel Tories who won't support Corbyn ?

Yes, the Tories now no longer have a majority even if both all the Tory independents came back on side and the DUP remain loyal (which is hardly likely), so if the DUP supported a VONC, or even abstained, it would be very likely to pass.

Although it’s not really been mooted, if the Letwin Amendment passes, and the PM is forced to send the letter, this is a real possibility, probable
even. What argument could the opposition bring for not bringing a VONC!

RedToothBrush · 19/10/2019 11:12

Robert Peston@peston
The position of most of the 21 rebel Tories is that they will support the Letwin amendment AND the prime minister’s Brexit deal. So they will vote for the Withdrawal Agreement Bill at 2nd reading on Tuesday. So that 2nd reading in effect becomes the Meaningful Vote...

And presumably if @BorisJohnson is forced by Benn Act tonight to request three-month Brexit delay, the EU will wait till that deferred meaningful vote on Tuesday before deciding how to respond to that request (which Johnson does not want to make, and will contradict in a...

second letter).

YeOldeTrout · 19/10/2019 11:12

fedup21: I guess govt would withdraw the bill and then there's nothing any sticking-around MPs would have to vote on.

YeOldeTrout · 19/10/2019 11:14

... BBC journalists are finally saying (World Service this morning) that Johnson himself is a divisive figure. Used to have X-party appeal, but it's long evaporated. If May had made this speech & pitched this deal, she might well have got it thru at this point.

PotterHead1985 · 19/10/2019 11:16

@wheresmymojo what's the book about? Sounds interesting.

Oakenbeach · 19/10/2019 11:16

The Letwin amendment is necessary. There are a small number of the most extreme Ultras who would prefer a no-deal exit to this deal - and have said as such - who are voting for it on the deal on the basis it is a compromise they can just about live with.

Although I don’t trust him, I genuinely believe BJ wants us to leave with this deal... he doesn’t stand to gain anything by driving off the cliff at this point. However, it may only take one or two of Ultras to scupper the deal if there are any issues with the legislation.

prettybird · 19/10/2019 11:17

What gets me about BJ (and the some of the sycophant MPs) is that he is saying "Vote for the Deal even though you've not had a chance to look at it, nor see the economic impact, but just trust us " Angry

Even some of the 21 (and the stupid Labour rebels) seem to be accepting this. Confused

Anyone. Who. Believe. A. Word. That. This. Charlatan. Says. Is. An. Imbecile. Angry

How do you know he's lying? His lips are moving. Angry

The only hope is that the more he parrots "Trust me" or words to that effect , the more he encourages the more sensible thinking MPs to vote for the Letwin amendment.

pemberlyshades · 19/10/2019 11:19

Watching parliament with the kids (3&5) We've decided we really like TMs "bubble unicorn necklace"

prettybird · 19/10/2019 11:20

Rugby back on so can't watch Parliament any more.

ZigAZigAhh · 19/10/2019 11:21

Watching with DS age 4 who is shrieking with hysterical laughter every time BJ jumps up. He has just said “mummy please can you turn it off, it’s AWFUL”.

QueenOfThorns · 19/10/2019 11:26

Well, I can see a certain degree of resemblance between Bozo and Mr Tumble, but the latter is no doubt more appealing to small children. And probably anyone else with any sense, to be fair!

Oakenbeach · 19/10/2019 11:26

Could the DUP cancel out those rebel Tories who won't support Corbyn ?

The DUP are at least as opposed to Corbyn as the Tory rebels were... A GE would be the likely outcome not a GNU.

pemberlyshades · 19/10/2019 11:26

DD (3) just asked if BJ is "trying to kill our world mummy?" Confused
Also she thought he was Donald bum trump...
astute that one!

BigChocFrenzy · 19/10/2019 11:26

Lewis Goodall@lewisgoodall

Lady Hermon says Boris Johnson “has not bothered” to reach out to the unionist community.
She is not happy.

Hermon voted for May’s deal three times.
Is a vote PM can ill afford to lose.

< "not bothered to reach out to" = "DUMPED",
which is what will happen also to any Labour Leave MPs naive enough to believe his lies about workers rights.
A main driver for the ERG is to remove workers rights >

BigChocFrenzy · 19/10/2019 11:30

Main thing is the Letwin amendment

Whether you are for or against this bill, MPs most certainly need more time to study it

  • and to add amendments

e.g. move the level playing field back from the PD to the legally binding WA bit
The EU would be happy with that, so they'd update the text for that

PotterHead1985 · 19/10/2019 11:31

If I never hear 'get Brexit done' again it'll be tooooo soon Angry

ImNotYourGranny · 19/10/2019 11:31

pmk

prettybird · 19/10/2019 11:33

FFS - how dare Barclay invoke Mo Mowlem in support of the government's deal Angry

It's on a par with BJ's crass "humbug" comment.

Shows a complete and utter lack of sensitivity and self-awareness Angry
